Hey /out/. A buddy and I are going hunting for the first time this weekend. We're headed to the southern Sierras to try to bag squirrels and rabbits with 10/22s.

I know to look around Black Oak trees because lots of wildlife feed on the acorns. I was even thinking of collecting some acorns to leech and grind into flour later.

Any tips for us, or stories you want to share?

I'm curious about:
>Good questions to ask the local rangers (I was planning on giving them a call beforehand)
>Squirrel/rabbit behavior, hunting methods (stalk vs wait)
>Anything worth knowing about SoCal mountain flora
>Tasty high-energy snack favorites
>Squirrel/rabbit recipes you've had success with

I hope we have a successful first hunt, but even if we don't, it'll be great to get the fuck /out/ of the city and see some nature.

What are you going to use for cooking while /out/? Southern California is pretty restrictive and rangers will not cut you any slack during the drought.

1-day trip, not camping. We're new to this stuff so we figured we'd make it easy and inexpensive.

Have either of you gone on non-hunting trips in California? You know that you need hunting licenses?

I'm going on a 4 or 5 day hunting trip with my brother in law. We are driving then taking atv's, I don't have an atv so my dad lent me his 2005 Honda Forman 500. I looked up online it has a 4.2 gallon fuel capacity. My brother in law said we will be traveling about 25-35 miles round trip on the atvs. How much fuel should I bring?

Anything else I should bring?

I'm bringing lighters, gas, tent, sleeping bag, and Remington ADL 700

I've hunted before but never more then a few miles in and never over night

>>630752
Well, you should probably find out what mileage you're gonna get.
>>
Have you asked your dad? He would know his ATV best.
>>
>>630758
How can I do that? Just drive it until the fuel gauge shoes a quarter empty?

>>630763
I did. He actually only uses it to plow the driveway and get the mail

I'm looking for a good kit for outdoor butchering and field dressing. So far I have come across this one by Outdoor Edge, and didn't know if you guys had any suggestions.

The one you pictured.

I have many fond memories sitting around an old Coleman propane lantern. Sure it's not the greatest thing, but damn if it doesn't make me sentimental.
>>
This too interests me. I prefer a headlamp or flashlight while alone but my GF has been nagging me to take her and her kid camping and I'm thinking that a nice little LED lantern might be just the thing I need.

Realise there's already a UK thread but it's a bit shit.

As /out/ shitposters often point out, wild camping in the UK is a pain in the arse. But it's possible. Can even be fucking marvellous when done right.

So, what's your favourite wild camp spot in our green and pleasant land? Scotland and Dartmoor in general are obvious correct answers, but be more specific, dammit.

I guess super easy places to drive to in europe (like France, Belgium, Netherlands, maybe Germany if it's a really amazing spot) can count to.

There's still out in the UK? You guys already removed tree and fauna. Do you camp in some sheep pasture?

if you're actually serious, we have trees and fauna. Some areas are very wild and heavily forested. We still have more /out/ spots that ireland or mediterranean island natioms or netherlands.

Is wild camping allowed most places in Scotland?

Whats up /out/

I wanna start doing outdoorsy shit.

Firstly, i intend to climb a mountain. I live in england so it seems ill likely have to get the train down to the lake district.

Ive got basic first aid training, good walking boots, a decent coat and back garden tier bushcraft skills.

What other items/skills do I need, and once I have them, do i just rock up whenever and climb that shit or do i have to appease some gods to avoid exploding?

Thanks guys

Pic related is the kinda thing id like to climb, idk if it exists in the uk though outside of scotland though.

>The North Face and a Japanese company named Spiber have joined forces to create the Moon Parka, a prototype parka made from synthetic spider silk. Its design is based on the North Face’s Antarctica parka but is made from Spiber’s proprietary material QMONOS, a fiber made from bioengineered bacteria that mimics the properties of spider silk. The material upgrades a jacket already meant for the most extreme arctic conditions with what is considered the toughest material in the world.

/out/ engineers and designers what is your opinion on this product?

>They exhibit a unique combination of high tensile strength and extensibility (ductility). This enables a silk fibre to absorb a lot of energy before breaking (toughness, the area under a stress-strain curve).

>A frequent mistake made in the mainstream media is to confuse strength and toughness when comparing silk to other materials. As shown below in detail, weight for weight, silk is stronger than steel, but not as strong as Kevlar. Silk is, however, tougher than both.

"Toughest" sounds nice if you don't know what it means. Basically, spider silk makes a really nice rubber band and still a pretty good piece of rope or cord. Sounds like it might make a nice elastic fabric too. I wonder about the abrasion resistance though (which is part of the reason jackets have thick outer fabric).

Hi /out/!

So lately I've joined an outdoorsy club at my university and I've fallen head over heels in love with it. Hiking trails, making bonfires, chopping wood, staring up at space in the wee hours...love every part of it.

I really want to get more into this and start doing more, but I've really struggled on finding a good resource that can give me the basics (i.e. what should I be carrying, what's a great budget knife, good beginner stuff to build with wood) Even the /out/ sticky is pretty bad, whatwith most of the relevant links being either 404s or generally unhelpful.

So is there a good guide online for this kind of thing?

there are tons of youtube fags who ultimately push their own merchandise but also make nice vids about their gear.
i'm not gonna tell you names in fear of being accused of shilling.
there is a lot you can learn from them just remember whatever they are selling you can get it cheaper on ebay.

Moving to Seattle. What should I do as soon as I get there besides go to the Space Needle?

Move away from that hellish city of gloom and rain.
>>
>>630690
Don't go up the Space Needle. It's an overpriced, poorly managed tourist trap.

The Columbia Tower observation deck has a better view for cheaper and the best view of downtown Seattle is free at Kerry Park.

Speaking of, Seattle has awesome parks. Enjoy them.

What seasons will you be in each area?

Summer in Europe you can get away with one minimal warm clothes, if you hit it the other way around tho...
>>
>>630686
Ill most likely be in Europe during winter, Im still currently in the process of which countries ill be in and for about how long, This isnt rushed at all for me so I plan on a really relaxed, slow pace the whole trip
>>
>>630688
I don't recommend that either. Early year in the northern hem and mid year in the southern hem just sounds like crappy planning. I'd do it the other way around.

What's the longest trip you've been on so far? Planning to hike, bike, hitch or hop? Are you comfortable with hitching, if you've never done it before? Are you planning on going alone? M/F? What do you plan on bringing to entertain yourself?

LL Bean stuff is ridiculously over priced, even when I go to their outlet stores the stuff on sale is still more expensive than at other stores. I don't know whats the better buy for this particular pair of boots but I am certain it exists.

all ive heard is great things about these boots except for the price
