Is there such a thing as a paper-based food vacuum bag? Looking for a better alternative to plastic for backpacking. Namely something I can burn after use and not feel so bad about it.

Plastic, metal, and glass about pretty much your only options for vacuum packed stuff. I use glass mason jars for vacuum packing dehydrated stuff I make.

The question he asked? Stories to tell around the camp fire.
I might try boiling them that way and have a friend test one.

Make sure you use a flavored condom. Plain condoms taste gross

I like em OK. Better knife ergonomics, can opener and scissors than Leatherman style multitools. I just wish I could find my MEC 20th anniversary special edition green Climber which I got on clearance for their 21st and took around the world with me (usually in my carry-on, such was life in the 1990s).

Best lightweight and compact way to boil water? Titanium cup, surplus canteen, enamel mug, kleen kanteen/nalgene?

I know there was some controversy on /out/ about jetboil, whats the deal with that?
>>
Best lightweight camp setup for staying in place for 30 days?
>>
>>771001

Need some advice re sleeping mats.

Are 3/4 sized mats still comfortable, or will my legs get cold?

Setup will be: Hoochie (tarp) over the top, bivy bag (http://www.mountainwarehouse.com/au/bivvy-bag-p13634.aspx?cl=Khaki) to add some warmth to my 15 celcius sleeping bag and a sleeping mat.

There is one for sale for $60 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Wanderer-Self-Inflating-Full-Length-Hiking-Mat-Boating-Camping-Fishing-/252388183838?hash=item3ac3820f1e:g:iGwAAOSw8vZXNVaj)

But if it doesn't make that much difference I could potentially get away a bit cheaper (and lighter) with this one: http://www.platatac.com/platatac-gonk-mat.html

The goal is that I want a system that is light and modular, so I can use it in summer but that it will also take me down to 0 degrees or thereabouts.

Cheers.

I went with my hiking with my friend a few days ago and he's extremely sick now.

We drank out of a lake with a lifestraw and I think maybe he contaminated like a really deadly bacteria with 99% fatality because the symptoms are all there, but I'm scared to tell him, but I'm also scared not to tell him.

10 day rule.

If you are not bleeding, swelling up like a blueberry, or turning weird colors, wait 10 days to see if you get better. Most ailments pass and the body heals in the that amount of time. If you don't get better after 10 days, see a doctor.

He's probably just sick from...

Hey /out/. I'm looking to start solo camping here in the UK, probably in Snowdonia (pic related) first and, if that goes well, the Lake District and Scottish Highlands later. How advisable is this for someone with crap equipment and limited camping experience?

I went camping for the first time last year in the Canadian Rockies, and loved it. We went for a week, and the campsite had all the basic amenities (toilets, showers, etc). Furthermore, one of my group was a real /out/doorsman and basically just looked after the rest of us - he helped us pitch the tents, he started the fires, he did the cooking, he told us where and how to store our stuff, and so on. For the second half of the week we left, and I took over (making far more mistakes than him, but still getting a bit of experience).

Anyways, I loved that, and wanted to...

I don't think you can carry your gear five miles.

> Compass and map

Completely unnecessary

>Good quality hiking equipment

Your shoes are probably fine, appropriate clothes are totally necessary, you ain't backpacking 5 miles with heavy tent, sleeping bag etc.
>>
>>811134
Cont,.

Lay out all your gear and food and water and see how much it weighs (too much) and if it fits in your backpack (it doesn't)

If you can carry it, great. If not choose wisely or get lighter gear. If it's too heavy and you go for it anyway (you should) you can just burn all your shit gear on your last day and have a nice stroll back to your car.

Overall it seems like you are on the right track and solo isn't dangerous unless you are a retard. Have fun m8 lad fag smoker rent boy...

It's It's a black bear. Why would you be afraid of them. I bet you could get it run away with a loud dart noise.

I'm hoping this is related enough to /out/ that someone can help me out because I don't have any fisherman connections.

Anyone have any sort of idea as to who i could find to ask to buy fishing bycatch? I see all this stuff showing net fishing catches a shitload of non target species that are almost worthless and want to pretty much just occasionally buy a trashbag of assorted small marine life.

Where the hell do I even begin looking?

I raise a bunch of large fish/reptiles who eat a lot. Figure it'd be a cheap way to have a super varied good diet. Not enormous quantities or anything, would depend how much they wanted to get rid of. Maybe 20 pounds at a time? I could do more or less though depending.

103 KB,
/4outdoors/ newb here. Found this little branch on a plant while out for a walk today, the red leaf intrigued me. Clearly the plant itself, nor the leaf was not dead, so now it's in its own pot.
I know next to nothing about IDing plant species, but I'm guessing this is very common (I live ine northern New England). Can anyone tell what species it is, and what caused that particular leaf to turn red?
6 replies and 1 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>810938
OK, OP here, the redness, if the leaf is still alive, is probably because of lack of chlorophyll. That much I remember.
>>
>>810938
OP, crunch a leaf and smell it. It looks like wintergreen to me. If it is, then you can google that shit right up as to why it's red now. (i;m guessing it's too dry, cuz it sure is dry here...)
>>
The red leaf is the queen leaf and all the rest are the worker leaves.

73 KB,
I just found out my slimey airline is charging $25 per checked bag. I'm taking a multi-destination flight and will end up in LA. I'm going to be doing a three week road trip with my friend and we're hiking and camping and shit.

I currently use my dad's good two person tent, I have a good mummy sleeping bag and use my dad's thermarest. Should I suck it up and pay the $75 and have my friend do the same or should we show up in LA and buy shitty gear from a pawn shop or Coleman stuff from Walmart? That way I could bring some of the stuff home and...

you're taking 3 bags, or 3 flights?

and if it's 3 flights are you staying at each stop in between, or is it just 3 legs to l.a. and your luggage will be checked all the way through?

how are you getting home?

Not OP. Would I be able to take a 55L pack as a carry-on? It seems like it would fit the space, but not sure.
