26 KB,
Does sleeping on your back give you nightmares? There was a thread on robotland I was lurking, and everyone there said that they had weird, scary dreams while sleeping on their backs, and this was not the case when sleeping on their sides. I get nice, pleasant dreams and a full sleep when I sleep on my back.

So, is this the result of blood rushing to certain parts of your brain due to position you are sleeping in? Is that even possible? So, if you make babies sleep one way only (they move, obviously, but you still can make them lay down in a different position initially)...

Ideal position is upside down in fetal position. Its how you developed in the womb so naturally it should be the best position to maintain for periods of sleep & development. (Most blood will go to the brain)

The right question to ask:
How do we fall asleep in an upside down fetal position comfortably?

That right, we build liquidy tanks where we can either breath the liquid/gel or we reattach a synthetic limbal corb to deliver oxygen.
>>
>>7713622
you turn upside down when you are in the womb and about to be birthed. so the ideal position wouldn't be upside down.
>>
>>7713622
Your spine is underdeveloped in the womb, you'll only end up with back pain trying to sleep in a fetal position, you'll have to remove the spine to get true comfort in the tank

If time travel is possible with relativity, what if we put a massive database far out in space away from earth's gravity or its revolution, and decelerated it as much as possible to where its almost stationary in space (possibly beyond our solar system) then we would be able to connect to it and view files from the future.

By doing so wouldn't we be able to transport data from the future through time? We put the server in a time irrelevant to earth and then upload all our knowledge to it and promise to do so for the next 100 years, then we would be able to connect...

Very true. I remember one of Einsteins colleague and rival. Believed that in order to time travel one does not need to accelerate over the speed of light. We do that with motion, if relativity is respected. But one would have to be still as possible. Everything vibrates. so that is near impossible.
>>
>>7713467
Like in the movie interstellar where a few minutes on the water planet are hours on earth, a few minutes in the location of the server would be years on earth, but instead of traveling physically, we would transmit data through other means.

Galaxies just don't spiral and move like they do unless either you add in a shitload of uncounted mass or seriously fuck with the equations for gravity.

Most scientists decided there was 'dark matter' and 'dark energy' which is matter and energy that we cant see and only interacts with other matter gravitationally.

Kardashev scale is a proposed mechanism to measure the development of a technological civilization. A type two people will capture the entire energy output of there star. Now what would this look like to an external observer?...

Can anyone point me to the science behind this stuff? Papers on the process to make it/general ideas behind it. It seems super interesting.

My question:
Why does DNA have to be amplified for the suspect to be caught?

I am confused because this is the way I see it: I have 1 bar of chocolate and I tell the chocolatier to melt it down and make me 10 bars of chocolate so I can see what it is.

I take it you don't know much about how PCR works. Is this correct?

You need enough DNA to be able to see it on a gel. That's usually exponentially more than you'd find laying around.

what does /sci/ think about a micro-biology major?
and what about bio-physics?

is it REAL science, and perhaps even BIG science?

>>

Im asking what do you guys think about the field of study, fuck the major what do you think about it as a science, is it respectable?
>>
>>7712918
Dont let sci dictate your opinion on science or major.

Microbiology is good and its a good major.
It is "real" science or whatever that means. Its applications are one of the most useful and its on a new frontier of discovery.

Micro-biology needs good chemistry knowledge tho so dont skip out on those.

Im not sure about biophysics but certainly its applications are equally important, as the field of biotechnology is growing and seems like the way to go.

most mechanics courses are taught to baby physics majors who have only single variable calc under their belts.

wut?

physics majors don't take mechanics until their junior/senior year and they take multivariable calc their 1st or 2nd year....

It is good news, but please don't overhype this. We are still a long way from proving stellarators are definitely more advantageous than tokamaks to produce fusion power. As a physicsfag (and a european), I'm glad to see a frontier science experiment getting so much coverage though. Let's just not get excited too early.
>>
it's nice that its getting exposure, but ionly a matter of time until /sci/ starts shitting on stellarators in favor of FRCs, not like /sci/ really understands either. it will be just like when /sci/ hyped the fuck out of the shitty general fusion design, or ITER before that.

stellarators are based tho, and behind FRCs are one of the best methods of fusion power production

Is linear algebra more useful than calculus? Should we teach that to HS students instead of calculus? Of course, if possible, we should teach both, but if you had to pick, which would you pick?
34 replies and 1 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
Calculus. But really that's a dumb question, you need both for science.
>>
>>7712289
They are both useful but I personally like more linear algebra because I find calculus to be boring.

But the introductory topics in calculus are way way easier to grasp than the introductory topics in linear algebra. HS kids are already killing themselves because of calculus so I think we should leave them like that.
>>
>>7712289
Both are unnecessary. Absolutely everything is solvable by cross multiplication alone.

I'm trying to work through this exam problem, anyone know how to show that this mixture exists at vapor-liquid equilibrium?
