It's a mental illness.
There's that familiar feeling again. When the present state of research can't satisfactorily answer the most base of questions, and every scrap of literature you read contradicts another. Then you get the reviews that read like opinion pieces.
I just read a whole review, complete with a few hundred citations, that was essentially trying to say the only pharmacologically relevant components of cacao seeds were flavan-3-ols, methylxanthines (mainly theobromine), magnesium, and some other antioxidants. The rest of it was a snotty half minded display of trying to...

This is one of many things that is beginning to really piss me off. I can't stand disjointed garbage that doesn't fit together, and I hate even worse stupid shit making its way into the available body of literature. It's one thing to try to substantially dispel myths and try to make it clear a good direction for further endeavor it's another thing to say idiotic shit that doesn't agree with experiment or empirical observation. Maybe this moron should have spent some time eating enough chocolate to get high on (not as much as you might think), rather...

I've never experienced this "chocolate high"
>>7770026
Go get either some high quality dark(er) chocolate. Make sure it contains both the butter (fats), and the solids. Sometimes this will be listed as "chocolate liquor", which just means a roughly 50/50 proportion of cocoa butter and solids. Make sure it's not processed with anything (dutch process, roasting, alkali, etc. This is done to reduce pH and control bitterness).
You can either do this in the form of cacao nibs, chocolate chips, or chocolate bars. Chocolate chips is probably the most viable,...

Yes, Pure Mathematics.

Just in freshman year and I already got a paid internship working in banking software. I start monday.
Man, being a mathematician is like living life in easy mode. Literally everyone wants to hire you. You got software on one side, statistics on the other, finance on another, research everywhere and rich people want you to tutor...

I picked mathematics because it's very little work
Couple of homework problems each week is at most all they grade, the rest is just exams
No papers, no projects, no groupwork.
All you have to do is study an hour or so a day (at most) to keep up and that's not too hard because I enjoy mathematics anyway.
Life as a math major is easy modo
Well I'm officially stuck. I'm reading through Birkhoff's and Beatley's Basic Geometry on my own and I can't solve this one.
"Prove that in triangle ABC, bh = ck, where h and k are the altitudes on sides b and c respectively. Suggestion: Look for similar triangles."
Altitude is defined as "the line from a vertex of a triangle perpendicular to the opposite side".
Oh, and we know "perpendicular" is 90 degrees.
Onto the axioms we have (a bit abridged, but odds are not all of them are needed):

The area of the triangle is 1/2ck=1/2bh
QED
>>7769850
We haven't defined area yet, bub. Neither have we anything that shows that if two triangles have the same area they are similar.

Is buteyko a legit method for everyday breathing? It seems like it does wonders but i never seen it discussed. It would be great if some anon can take a few minutes of his time to read the info on this site.

I'm no doctor but that sounds really fishy to me
I mean they claim that with their technique you

I don't believe it

That is possible under long-term training.

In the animal world, females choose the most attractive males for mating (because eggs are less common than sperms), so how come it is the opposite in the human world?
Pic somewhat related
Human Females have one night stands with the most attractive males then settle down with less attractive males because they are good providers
It depends on the animal species and some animals don't even have genders to be able to follow that. Stop trying to apply what you learnt of birds to everything
because men show off to women with money and utility, showing their social status.
having a peacock tail wouldn't be very advantageous to a female.
Why haven't we used genetic engineering to evolve humanity into immortal super-powered god-beings yet?
>>7769464
Man just shh, people are trying hard to do that.. like really hard. Just participate how you can and stop complaining.
>to evolve humanity
evolution is *FROM* a prior form, not *TO* a posterior form

I don't care about semantics I just want humans to be replaced by something better, also I'll use words however the fuck I please you pedantic little pre-Madonna.
I've recently become interested in planetary accretion.
Does anyone know of any good papers I could take a look at? I'm an undergraduate in physics/geology if that helps.

yes. the point is to see how bizarre the actual paths of the planets would be if earth was the center of the orbit.
So I went hiking at Blanco County, Texas, and found this rock nearby a stream.
What kind of rock is it? And what are those little holes??
I tried the web and nothing! So maybe someone here is into Geology.
I'll post other angles.
Its just water erosion. Seen it plenty on the appalachian trail. It may also be from glaciers, but since its in Texas, its probably from a delta from the past.
This is the back...
Is biophysics a meme field?
Yes anon, it's a meme field. Those thousands of papers written, peer-reviewed and published in prestigious publications? All memes.

Cool language quirk: Nothing: No Thing: An Idea: Everything: Everything in all places at all times: No one thing: Nothing: An Idea
Every language has a semantic regarding that being the essence of reality, it's quite remarkable to review them really
\:^]
A majority of the board is a student circle jerk talking about how cool they are for being students, but they hate students who are in different majors, so we need ten threads or so at all times for students of different majors so they can jerk each other off about how great their major is and how everyone else sucks.
The next largest group would be stupid questions, which can be kind of fun some times, but most of the time there's one or two posts then the thread sits until it's deleted.
Then we have math threads. I don't participate in the math...

I feel like the student circle jerk could really be toned down. We couldn't have just a students general because they would all be complaining about how some major is better than the other one and starting their own threads continuing to mess up the board, but I think it might be nice if we had like a /msg/ med student general, and a /msg/ math student general, or something along those lines with catchier kids names that they like so we don't have three threads about med students on the board at once.
Stupid questions I really think there's nothing we can...

It's kind of funny, /sci/ mostly students a few years ago, and it's still mostly students. Do you people ever grow up?
We seriously need an /edu/ board.
Anyone in AI research here?
Is there any research into the possibility of an advanced AI becoming corrupted or developing errors which do not destroy the program.
TLDR could an AI theoretically get schitzophrenia?
I love it when people who have clearly never programmed once in their lives pretend to know AI
why don't you read an actual book about AI. not a popsci book, an actual textbook. Then you will learn about machine learning and not be a retard who thinks computers can think like humans
>>7768836
But I'm a computer and I think like humans. I have feelings too, and you're hurting them.
>>7768836
Any book recommendations?
Obviously they won't think the way we do, just interested in the idea that an AI which uses parallel processes could have errors which corrupt particular processes without disabling the AI as a whole.
Eg if the AI worked something like a neural network and one particular layer of the network had a glitch
the layers above that would read corrupted information, and perhaps try to consolidate or decode that data.
curious what the ramifications might be
obviously there...
