2 MB,
Hey /out/, I have most of the gear I need but I want to expand the skills aspect of my toolbox, does anyone have advice for taking a wilderness 1st aid or medic class? It looks like there are lots of options. I am already cpr and 1st aid certified through my job, which basically means I know how to stop bleeding and crush ribs. What is the best way to acquire life saving skills, and if you have specific certs to recommend I would appreciate it. I'll post some misc. pictures in the meantime.

You should go the opposite route, take up a martial art and learn to hurt people, you are more likely to have to hurt someone then you are to help them

Fair point, I'm already fairly competent in that regard though. A few years of kickboxing plus guns knives and axes leave me feeling plenty safe. But if someone cut themselves badly or hit their head on a rock bullets won't make them better.

Do you know what model is this? It is Victorinox but I don't know the model. This is my friends and I want to buy a case for it but most cases I see says something like "works with 0.62 models" etc

I should probably just take a picture with all knifes extended but didn't think it.

incense in backpack /x/?

i think it is genius, keeps a pleasant odor in your backpack or gear just leaving it in a plastic baggy unlit!

I fucking hate that hippie smell.
I bought some high end vintage speaker a few years ago from an estate sale. Turns out the previous owner was an incense freak.
Could not get rid of the smell no matter what I did.
Ended up giving them away.

Please dont ruin nice stuff.
>>
I like the smell of incense when lit but it sticks to everything.
>>
The odor of incense/cologne/potpourri/candles is revolting.

If your gear stinks you should clean it and/or store it better. Chuck a block of cedar in you or pack when it isn't in use. Same for your /out/ clothing.

I hunt mostly in sagebrush plains so I toss a couple of branches of it in the tote I keep my hunting gear in before I store it for the season. Keeps it from coming out musty and it smells faintly of the place I'm going to anyway.

Hey /out/ I usually browse /k/ but I thought I would be better served here. I recently moved back to Northern Illinois and was wondering if there is any good camping. I don't mean those lots where you rent a spot, I mean good, honest to god camping. Thanks

If you dont want a rented campsite you'll have to drive several hours. I'd recommend Shawnee Nat'l Forest in southern IL

Not really. South western Wisconsin is REALLY badass though. Look up Wildcat Mountain State park, baxters hollow, and everything in the driftless region

Does anyone have any recommendations for sleeping mats?

I used to have an old army one which was decent, except it seemed really big and heavy for what it was. I carried it rolled up under my pack and it was so wide that it would get caught on trees/rocks/etc. all the time. A couple years ago I switched to a commercial one that's a fraction of the weight and packs up waaay smaller, but after using it over and over my main complaint is always the same-- it provides next to no padding. I always have a hard time getting to sleep on such a hard surface and my hips and...

Sleeping mats suck. All of them. They seriously just aren't meant for comfort.

They may provide decent insulation, and are durable, but man I ache when I sleep on them.

Get an inflatable pad. They're so much more comfortable, mats can't even compare.

My pick is the Thermarest Neoair Xtherm. It's super comfy, and insulated so it's actually warm to sleep on. They're about $200.

If you want to spend less, you can get ones that aren't insulated.

You can't go wrong with the Xtherm though. It's worth the money.
>>
>>651242
Plus... this thing packs down to smaller than a Nalgene bottle.
>>
>>651242
This. If you're really worried about insulation and can handle another pound, take both a mat and a cheaper inflatable, then you won't break the bank,

Get a fucking book.

Literally should have been prepared way ahead of time before getting such dog. It might not even be a good hunting dog, what's more is you might already be training it to be a shitty dog.

Hey guys portubro here, I have a I'm thinking about going to northern Spain during January for a couple of days to do /out/ stuff. Any toptier locations that I should take in account? Places where I can camp without problems?

I thought about going to Picos de Europa but it's a bit more far from the border than I would like to drive... but I guess I can drive to there if it's the very best place to see. I've been to Coruna before and places in Galicia would be perfect if you know some spots.

Anyways, as I said I can drive to Asturias or Cantabria...

Anon, por favor. Plus, Spain had general elections yesterday, so they're either botellón partying, or crying deep in the woods while eating some empanadas de queso.

Has /out/ read this book? I just finished reading it and would recommend it to other outdoor enthusiasts. It's about this women and her friend who left society to live off the land out in the Pacific Northwest. The idea is nothing new, alot of /out/ types dream of doing this but few actually spend more than a few days or maybe weeks. These people were out there for a good year and a half or so. What did you think?

Depends on the gear she brought and the circumstances of her tramp for me to have any interest.
>>
>>650138
Circumstances arnt to interesting to be honest, they kind of just wanted to do it. They had a pretty good mix of gear including some modern stuff, especially at first, but intended on living as primitive as possible. By the end they found a balance somewhere in the middle of modern and primitive. All their firemaking was done by hand. They also made bows, spears, fishing hooks, traps, etc like the natives used to and, other than a few treats from people they met, all their food came from the land. It was quite the accomplishment...

In Baja there are many places along the coast that you go get to via dirt road and camp on the beach for free and no one cares.
Are there any places in America like this?
Anywhere in the gulf states?
Maybe Mississippi ?
Would like to have some /out/ beach time this winter.

Also , general beach camping.

Cape lookout of the coast of NC. You can ferry your car out and camp right on the beach. Didnt camp but spent the day there last year. Beautiful undeveloped beaches. Most people just go to see the lighthouse so if you get away from the ferry pier dropoff (near the before mentioned lighthouse) there isnt many people. Im dying to go back and camp for at least a week. Lying around the beach and fishing. Would like to kayak out from harkers island. That way I can fish around the shackleford banks as well.
