Tap on the window, which tells the iphone to expose for that area and not the center of the screen (which is your girlfriend in this instance).
If you tap and hold the yellow box, you can also slide your finger down to decrease exposure.

the phone realises you probably dont want a black picture with the window exposed so it sets the exposure on the person
if you want the window exposed properly, and not all blown out and white, then tap the screen at that point. Wherever you tap is where the phone will set the exposure too. Tap and hold down for auto exposure lock.

I have an external hard drive that backs up everything. I've been meaning to do cloud but effort. I had a professor in college who backed up everything on DVD-rom which always seemed a littler crazy. Keep in mind this was back in 2008 and the guy had just moved from film but still.

3-2-1 was popularized by a photographer.
3 copies on 2 different media and 1 copy in a different location. An external drive connected to or even not connected but in the same building as your workstation doesn't count as another location.
I'd add that it's not a backup if you haven't restored from it and checked that everything was reproduced properly.

I didnt format before I went out today - so when I got home I shift deleted all the photos - was shift scrolling with keyboard and then it went to that stupid select all top part and I deleted it.
Any way to get the pictures back?
Google says Recuva - I downloaded it and it is scanning but it has been scanning for 5 minutes now.

I use a m2 sometimes. Fiddly at first but solid IQ and if you need portability AND a zoom it's awesome. Link should give a good idea of night shot capability. The m3 and m4 have a (much if zooming) better lens for night.
If you DON'T need a zoom then a Ricoh GR or Fuji X70 will blow it away for IQ, especially at night.

It fits in your pocket and has Sony printed in the corner. It has no other distinguishing features but if those are important to you get it it. If not get a Canon G1X2. It's not very fashionable but it's a better camera
