Get in here and discuss (maybe even share) some photobooks.
I just picked up Glass House by Margaret Morton. Cool shit, beautiful lighting all the way through, perfect way to photograph the homeless without being a dick. Would recommend.

Can we have a /p/rotip general?

I notice that almost all pics posted here by beginners have uncalibrated colour spaces.

This should be the first thing people do when they edit and export their photos via Photoshop, Gimp or what ever editing software you work it.

In Photoshop go to; Edit -> Color Settings

From there, you should convert or set your working colour profile to sRGB for posting shit on the internet (as most people don't have access to 10bit monitors).
27 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
Also this is the default colour space for 99% of consumer printers. Change it to sRGB unless you specifically need greater colour information.
>>
>>2765991
Noob here. What difference does it make?
>>
>>2766087
Color depth, the Internet has limited amount of color range that can produced. The Internet runs on sRGB and wouldnt be able to replicate the richer color scheme of Adobe RGB; which would lead inaccurate colors in photos

6D if you don't plan on taking lots of action shots, 70D if you do. See if you can put a nice 7DMkII in your budget because it is even better.
6D is awesome on high ISO and a beast for landscape, nightscape and basically anything in low-light. If the subject movement is not that big (not jumping around, nicely predictable) than it can track it just fine.

As an anon who pops in and out of here a few times a year...let me say,

Holy shit. Do not take any advice from here right now.

/p/ has never been some shining sea of amazing photographic knowledge, but it's really bad right now, even in the realm of gear where you at least generally had a small handful of reasonable voices that is not present now.

For those of you trying to get a start here's some real advice:
>Caveat emptor. If you don't know what this means google that shit and learn a little.
>Anyone who gets dogmatic over any of this stuff isn't to be listened to.
>Double/triple/quadruple check anything you hear here. There's a running ton of review sources on the internet. Read enough of the big ones to get a feel for how they think. See if how they think mostly agrees with how you think or not.
>Gear isn't photography. It's an important part, but it isn't by far the most important part.
>The three things you can do to get better at photography are to read more books about photography and art in general, take more directed pictures (e.g. go out with an idea and try to make it happen, then sort out in what ways and why you were successful/unsuccessful), and study pictures you find interesting
>when it comes to gear, use what you can afford that works and most all of it works pretty well these days.
>remember photography is a skill, you get better through practice and study, the creative side comes as you master your tools and start thinking "I want something that looks like x"
>squash any toxic attitudes. That shit leaks through to your real life no matter how much you think it doesn't.

/p/ cycles up and down as people come and go, with luck it'll cycle back at least somewhat up soon, but I won't hold my breath. In the meantime, if you're truly interested in photography, much of what you see and hear here is trolling bullshit.

I've heard the whole "go out with an idea to focus yourself", but when I'm still trying to mess around with exposure and composition, what the hell am I supposed to take pictures of? I'm at the point where I think that kind of thing would only really hinder me from taking pictures as I can't get to that higher level thinking as a photographer.

Are there any easy beginner assignments that would give me focus while still letting me take a ton of pictures to figure out how to produce the best image with my camera?

How does /p/ store and organize their gear?

I just rearranged my place and figured I'd show mine and see how other anons do it.

Top shelf is empty bags. The bottom visible one is my preloaded "go bags," one for my DSLR kit and one for my Hassy. The middle shelf is loose lenses and my camcorder, a couple of classics, and that big thing behind is the Epson R2880 that I don't have a good permanent spot for. Accessories, cleaning stuff, bag dividers, chargers, and the like go in the plastic drawers on the left.

If anybody's wondering, by the way, the fabric on the wall is covering a vent, my room is a small rental apartment behind a house, without its own climate controls, and when the people who live in the house put the heat on, it gets insanely hot in here without something to block some of the airflow. The big knife is a WWI bayonet that a friend gave me. (Actually the same guy I got the F2 from.)

Underrated thread.

>context: The atmosphere is comprised of nitrogen, oxygen and fungi spores. They are in your grandmothers' lungs, in the oval office and in your asscrack. They are everywhere, they cannot be killed, and with the presence of moisture they will advance to stage two: Actual fungi or mold.

Basically I stored all my stuff in a cupboard in a damp room, didn't photo for a while, then came back and there was fungi on each side of each lens. So I put them in the sun to kill the growths, but there are still spores about waiting for that humidity to strike again.

Now I keep my gear in a backpack, in a dryer room, ready for instant deployment.

I went to a winter fair in Detroit yesterday. It was my first time in a while really going out and shooting. This was my first time shooting after looking up the basics of using a histogram and consistently shooting in shutter speeds faster than 1/60. Critique is appreciated.

I was worried about not getting enough of my shots in focus so when there was enough light I used a narrower aperture than my lens' 1.8, but now looking back I think a lot of my shots would have looked better with the bokeh, like this one.

>GLASS IS THE DEVIL!

Does this guy know what he is talking about or not?

In a recent video he calls the Otus lenses sharp but shit and goes onto explain why all the extra elements that essentially make the lens sharper negatively effects other aspects of the lens quality.

I also remember that video where the hips granger talks to the Zeiss master lens designer who explain that zoom lenses can be potentially sharper due to having more glass...... But if you talk to most photographers they will still say that primes render a more pleasing image than zooms.

So what the fuck, seems he knows what he is talking about? Is glass really the devil? Are lower element lenses really better than higher element more expensive lenses??

i wouldn't be surprised if the only consistent difference between all low-element and high-element lenses is variation in manufacturing

does it really matter if you aren't cropping your photos like a 6x digital teleconverter
>>
>>2766042

Well, even if you are not it is still interesting to know if a $2000 prime really is worth the extra cash over a $300 one.

Of course you might get the wider aperture on the more expensive prime lens but if what he says is correct then the cheaper/slower lenses should be better optically? I will ALWAYS choose the better IQ over a slightly wider aperture.

I just recently bought a fed 3 and now i'm trying to decide on which 35mm film to use. What was the first brand/type of film you shot on? Would you recommend it?

Anyway, first time shooting the cars with the flash. Not totally happy with the job I've done, I didn't pick a good enough background and i haven't got the technique for using the flash on cars right yet, I tried to just adapt what I did on bikes and it didn't quite work perfectly.

For next time I'm either gonna try and pick up an LED panel and get light painting or try and find a strip box that I can fold down to fit on my bike.

Obviously I'm no expert but some stuff I've picked up so far.

yes bringing your own light source is probably the best way to deal with having no light but that brings with it it's own pains, some general tips that don't require much extra gear or editing would be.

1. Tripod, every time.
2. Clean your front element, artificial light sources, street lights, car headlights etc. will make it flare very strongly.
3. get a lens hood, other street lights will fuck up your contrast.
4. Don't rely on autofocus when it's dark, do a test exposure.

I might wait until I get a decent tripod and a wireless transmitter before trying flash again

You have to wonder, why has Yahoo has allowed Flickr to fester and entropy?

• There has been very little change since Yahoo took over except for a few token changes in the format - something which many felt made the photo pages less ergonomic anyway.

• Investing in "pro" status is essentially pointless now that so much memory is on offer for free.

• "Camera roll" mode appears to have been hastily rolled out as an additional feature, but remains in Beta to this day.
This feature is ill placed - hoisted up, as it is, in front of Photostream (the sites clear cut preview mode) in the menu.
Its true function seems to be minor and not warranting of its own prominent page space.

• "Creation" mode seems stunted and expensive. There is no way of calculating shipping, nor is there much creativity in the variety of print styles.

• There has been zero effort to nurture any sort of community on flickr. The websites groups are detached and generally squabble in small dissipating threads.

• The site is being ran as if it were an unwanted child. A nuisance to its owner that feels betrayed by its dispassionate treatment - still wearing the same clothes it was 5 years ago.

Once upon a time people said that Flickr was going to blow up and outperform Instagram, but that never happened.

Long story short: Fuck you Yahoo.

i just started shooting in december and have a flickr, viewbug, and 500px. dont want to keep updating all of them so what's the best of them and any others
>>
>site is being run like it's an unwanted child

It is unwanted. Yahoo is killing it (or selling it) within the fiscal year, supposedly.

>Yahoo is killing Flickr

They wouldn't at this point. Too many people still rely on it to gain exposure.
