Okay /p/ so tomorrow I'll be using my cousin as a model. She has a darker complexion and is very short.

I have read through these threads with great intent >>2867161 & >>2867910

But still have some questions:
Should I take a sunlight reflector along (I could use a car reflector because I dont have any equipment besides my camera) as it may be overcast?
She has acne - not a lot but you know with young girls they cake one the makeup - what should I tell her regarding that?
Should she wear a hat/beanie? The weather is cold here right now so I told her that she should wear form fitting clothes and she can take a jacket along which she can take off between shots.
I should always focus on her eyes correct?
We will be shooting in the CBD and I was told in one of the earlier recent photo threads that I should not really put her next to graffiti which could distract (as it apparently did with my friend who acted as a model then) so what should I be aiming for location wise?
Any other tips I could do preshoot when I go to pick her up?

Thanks /p/ and wish me luck

>Should I take a sunlight reflector along (I could use a car reflector because I dont have any equipment besides my camera) as it may be overcast?
A car reflector is going to be very, very harsh. Harsher than you typically want. That metallic finish will create very intense light with very sharp shadows. If you can get your hands on a softer reflector, it'll be better for you starting out.

>She has acne - not a lot but you know with young girls they cake one the makeup - what should I tell her regarding that?
Caked on make up will be a fuck ton harder to clean up than skin issues. If you want to tell her something, tell her to go light on the makeup and go for a more natural look. Then, you're going to have to spend some time in Ps. Learn to fix skin right, though. Don't just fucking blur it out and turn her to plastic.

>Should she wear a hat/beanie? The weather is cold here right now so I told her that she should wear form fitting clothes and she can take a jacket along which she can take off between shots.
You don't want her taking a hat on and off. Either she keeps it on because it's part of her outfit, or she doesn't wear one. On and off will fuck up her hair.

>I should always focus on her eyes correct?
Yes.

>We will be shooting in the CBD and I was told in one of the earlier recent photo threads that I should not really put her next to graffiti which could distract (as it apparently did with my friend who acted as a model then) so what should I be aiming for location wise?
For fuck's sake stay away from graffiti. It looks cheesy as hell and it ruins pictures. And keep her away from leaning up against brick walls. It doesn't look good. It's just a crutch.

I'm going to NYC tomorrow for the first time. What should I know about shooting there? I'm gonna be going to the museum and statue of liberty, chinatown, etc. Are there any restrictions or anything that I should be aware of? Thanks

You will mostly have tourists and people on their cellphines as subjects. Just dont be a total dick and people won't even give you a second look
>>
>>2874000
There are no rules in NYC. You can do whatever you want. Some common sense that applies to shooting anywhere in the U.S. 1. Don't take pictures of little kids. While perfectly legal and nothing will likely go wrong other than a chance to get dirty looks I just don't want to risk it. Maybe I'm just paranoid. 2. Most black people are chill and will even be outspoken enough to ask you to take pictures of them and they will pose for you. Some of the best subjects. Their outspokenness can also backfire and some can be really rude and aggressive. My advice whether they are black, white, brown or yellow is contrary to most advice I hear. Do not try to explain yourself. Do not try to defuse the situation. Do not engage. Do not stick around. Just walk away without saying a word. This has worked for me so far. Some people just don't know how to behave in public.

In my opinion New Yorkers are actually nice for the most part. Of course if you get so many people together in one place there are bound to be some bad seeds. Not everyone is like that. For everyone person I see acting like an animal I see ten more being cordial and polite.

Last piece of advice. Get an unlimited metrocard for the duration of your stay. Take the train and walk everywhere you go. If you are in the train and get lost you can ask for directions. This happens all the time and people are willing to help. If the person you ask doesn't know or doesn't seem sure there is likely someone else you can ask. If you are on the street you can use the map on your phone. New Yorkers are not that great at giving directions aboveground. People just know A to B of their commute.

I fucking fallen to a new low /p/.

I'm officially now also a night-club/bar photographer because my portraiture and model photography business has slowed down to a halt. I used to pull in three or four sessions a week, with a $2,500 to $3,000 a week income, but now it's down to about two sessions a MONTH with only $500 a week.

Rent at my city studio was killing me so in the past two weeks, I've just signed up with a couple of bars and nightclubs for $150 a session that wanted to fill up their social media pages. So that brings in an extra $450 every weekend, but I feel so degraded.

Maybe I should go back to the real world and fine a real job. I don't want to do this anymore.

If you're not happy, why don't you try something like weddings or real estate?
>>
>>2873878
I don't know. Probably instagram and smartphones.

>>2873879
I don't like to do weddings. But real-estate can be a thing. It'll be like landscape photography which I actually do in my spare time.

So I've seen a few commentators suggest only using a prime 50mm as a way to challenge yourself.

So I wandered around the woods for a while, and tried my hand at it - I'm fairly pleased with results, but I'd love to hear your feedback.

Also, anyone else tried something similar? Pretty tricky to capture a landscape with 50mm I found.

3.4mp holy fuck thats a lot more than anyone needs.
1080p full HD is only 2mp
With 3.4 you can print 11"x14" that can be viewed up close easily.
And you can even print bill board sized if you view from billboard distances.

We need more control and regulation of megapixels. Non professionals don't need more than 6 mp.
When Kodak invented the Digital camera in 1973 they never had this much mp in mind.

Film General Thread, aka FGT.

>just posting in the FGT doesn't make you gay, unless you use Caffenol

This is the thread for all of your stupid film questions, and to post your film snapshits without flushing them down the RPToilet.
It's OK to ask about film gear in this thread.

Pic related is my first attempt at ghetto scanning, but it's all washed out. It could be the film but I don't think it is.

How about a "what are you doing right" & "what are you doing wrong" thread?

Post your photos and we'll tell you what is good and what you fucked up, even if you fucked up more than you did good.

ill just say that its a bit weird that shes just standing in the forest. i would like if she were doing something like kicking at leaves or brushing her hand along a branch as she walks. just normie stuff that one would do passing through trees. also idl aspect ratio

First for is it alright to upgrade to a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera after multiple months of practicing with a Panasonic GF3? Or do I need something else that's not as demanding and complicated to use as the BMPCC to make a slightly more gradual transition into professional cameras, like a Panasonic G7 or similar?

Fuck, I know it would be a big leap to go from a half decade old compact system to something as badass as the Blackmagic, but I've wanted one of those ever since I got into /vid/eo ;_;

You're building up the blackmagic too much in your head m8. If you know the basics of exposure then there's really not much to worry about except how to expose for the expanded dynamic range and color grading the footage in Resolve. Even then you can set it to record more conventionally so you don't have to think about it and avoid Resolve altogether. Anyways, Blackmagic basically designed this camera for DSLR users, so if you really want it, then fine go get it. Really though, I would suggest rethinking how you do video if you're using one camera to "practice" before getting another one. Just try to make the best videos you can with the equipment you have. While I haven't used a BMPCC, I have used an URSA. It's a cool camera, but has its own set of limitations too.

Well, on to my own question:

I've offered to really cheaply shoot a wedding (at the cost of renting equipment) for a family member. They didn't want to pay for a pro videographer, but just want to get a recording of the ceremony. Obviously I got the video portion all figured out, the only question is the audio. The space is a medium sized church and I don't believe there will be any kind of sound system to get an output from so I've been thinking of setting up a mic, but where and what kind? I thought of setting up a shotgun mic on the camera but that would sound too distant. So should I put like an omni mic or maybe a stereo mic closer to the front like on a pole and run the cable back to the camera?

g7 is better.
if you want raw get eos m + magic lantern.
it's so cheap you can get both.

Anyone ever have any luck trying to make your own waterhousing for a camera? I really want to take my camera with me on a kayak but I don't have the money to buy something nice.

Your pic related is seriously what I would do
I mean I would just shoot it without a care since my nikon is weather sealed
But whenever in-water just wrap a rubber on it
>>
Just buy a waterproof P&S for <$100 if you're a digifag or a Nikonos for <$100 if you're a filmfag.

If thats too expensive then you probably shouldn't be risking your current equipment on half-assed homemade water housing anyway.

This, you're going to spend a lot more to replace your current camera when your half-assed DIY attempt fails than you would on a waterproof camera. There's a reason housings are so bulky and expensive.
