I went out night shooting.

Can anyone tell me if there is anything good in these? Tonight I was practicing back button focus and trying to include people and get closer to them in my photos since I usually shy away from that sort of thing.

Use the video general or the gear general please. I've heard nothing but bad things about the digital bolex all the same
>>

How exactly does that faux film crank work? I mean, when you fold it out the knob bit will be facing towards the camera body, ungraspable and utterly useless. This makes my autism cringe hard.
>>
>>2712195
they are 2 separate beasts OP, BM4k is super 35 4k and the Bolex is super 16 2k

the BM has higher resolution and a larger sensor for a more big production look.
you are though, going to need a LOT of HD space, hope you like buying terabytes by the dozen

the bolex has a very 16mm look, so if you don't mind sacrificing some DOF control for that 80s-90s indi film look. go for it.

The BM pocket cam is also super 16 an about half the price of the bolex but it is only HD.

So, what can you tell me about middle gray and camera metering?

Everyone writes that a camera's meter, without exposure compensation, will try to achieve a histogram mean value of middle grey.

But no one says whether they mean:

* A middle gray value of RGB(128,128,128) as defined by the sRGB color space

* A middle gray value of RGB(124,124,124) as on defined by an 18% reflectance gray card,

* A middle gray value of RGB(188,188,188) as defined by absolute whiteness.

Without this, the ONLY FUCKING USE for a histogram is to see whether the photo touches the edges and is therefore over- or underexposed. Nothing else. "Shoot to the center" is retarded if you want a dark photo, and "shoot to the right" is retarded if you don't want a bright photo (except that editing down to proper exposure degrades pixel quality massively).

So... I know what the metering modes do, but not what value of brightness from 0-255 they are actually trying to "mean out" to, in each their own way.

Ok /p/, Here are a selection of photos i took with my shit gear. I usually never share pictures online (although i lurk a lot), but I thought a rigorous spanking should do me some good. Those were taken in Nepal, China, United Arab Emirates and Oman (where i live and work). I tried to select pictures with different subjects/themes/techniques, to get out of my comfort zone, or they'll all be natural landscapes.

Hey /p/, a few months ago I had the opportunity to go on the sidelines of a New York Red Bulls game and take some pictures. I consider myself a decent enough photographer, but that night I realized sports photography is a whole different ball game to photographing static objects. A good 95% of my pics were out of focus (like the one in this post). This Sunday, I have the chance to go on the sidelines again. But this time, I want to walk out with better content, pictures that are actually in focus. So, do you guys have any tips that could help me?

Equipment I used last time was a T2i with 75-300mm, this time I'll be bringing a 60D with a 70-210mm (but I'll also have the 75-300 in my bag in case the 70-210 isn't long enough).

Sounds to me that technique is the problem not lens choice.

Look up marksman vids on jewtube: ie. breathing, stance etc.

A new lens isn't a magick bullet.
>>
>>2711364
Yeah, I know. I think it may have had something to do with my autofocus settings, but I'll definitely do some research before I pin it down on my hardware and not my skill.
>>
>>2711366
Try back button focus (with af).

It's a pain to begin with but can be a good tool.

Gear Thread

If you have questions about a new camera, what lenses to buy and anything related to gear or wondering about getting into photography, post it in this thread.
Do not attempt to make a new thread for your new Rabal, broken glass and being new. You have been warned!
I repeat, ANYTHING GEAR RELATED goes in here!

And don't forget, be polite!

These dumb threads are keeping the board cleaner. Do you want a new thread for every noob question or dumb debates?
Also I am trying to post a different picture for every OP and the internet is running out of nice Pentax shots. Soon I'll have to recycle older pics.
>>
acquired a pentax K-x with 18-55 and 50-200 kit, it's my first DSLR. right now lacking something with good low light capabilities.

thinking about at least 1.8, 35 or 50mm. does that make any sense cosidering what i have already?

I mean, the 50mm 1.8 lens is only like 100 bucks

Apart form the obvious danger, what is stopping me (or you) going to a warzone and taking pictures and selling them to an agency or on a freelance basis?

Used M8's are very cheap. Film bodies are pretty cheap (and total cost will be cheap if you have access to cheap film / dev). There are Epson digital rangefinders too. Other than that, X100 models and the X-Pro1 are probably the best if you're set on the rangefinder / OVF style. Pretty much any mirrorless will look and feel vintagy with a decent leather case.

Just depends what features you need (OVF, etc).

Greetings. I have a dilemma between buying Canon EOS 1100D or NikonD3100. I've been told that these are good for a beginner. I don't have a thick wallet. But I can afford buying one of those. Which one should I pick.
P.S It'll be my very first personal camera. I'm the lowest beginner you can imagine. Which one will be a good pick? Bumping with my very best pics.

Nice pics OP.
Beginner videomaker here.
I'm actually using D3100 with 3 different lenses. I know it's definitely not good for video but that's all I have and I want to do something.
I got the hang of the camera pretty fast.
Neither have no external mic jack tho.

Just finished scanning and editing 6 rolls. I'll post my favorites. You go and do whatever you want. Critique. Take the piss. Remain silent in awe. Whatever you want.

Most are HP5, some are TMax400.
