I am new to photography.
I want my male subjects to appear as handsome as possible, so AT LEAST not uglier than they are in real life, and if possible, make them look even better than IRL. I know that Photoshop is important too, but this thread is strictly regarding taking the picture itself.
I saw a video on YouTube with a guy advising to slightly poke your head out to accentuate the jaw line. Seems like a good trick, makes a noticeable difference.
Also, something VERY important I learned, is that it's important to have a high focal length:

get a 70mm-200mm; its fine
300mm wont make a difference since youre not taking straight on front head shots and will create a lot of distance between you and the subject
and lol 135mm is not a realistic focal length; ideal yeah
>>2803330
300mm may be "too flat" for a head shot, but the larger issue with using lenses that long is that you have to be so far away from the subject that you struggle with finding a room to work in, and you also lose a lot of your ability to connect with your model because you're so far away.
General practice puts you around 15 feet from your subject for an optimum rendering of their face. At that distance, for full body shots, you'll be at about 85mm on a full frame camera (55mm on APS-C) and for...

Pretty new here
Do you guys take a camera with you everywhere? Lately I've been trying to make an effort to give a period of time to a session where I can practice taking photos but sometimes I find something I'd love to take a photo of and I don't have my camera on me
Do you always carry a camera on you? Is it weird if you're always walking around with a dslr around your neck?

I've started doing this a lot more. I now take a compact 35mm film body with me everywhere and my digital on a over the shoulder strap. The only time I don't take it with me is if I'm doing my daily trip to the shops.
It's not weird at all.

Even thought i like the idea but you should get a lower shot to have a great separation between the girl and the landscape.
Fucking faggot
Let's talk about this.
Anyone have tried using cine lenses for still photography?
extra:
Would be worthwhile buying some old\vintage\analog\whatever cine lenses for photography?
>>2804152
The benefits of cine lenses (clickless aperture, thin but smooth knurled focus ring, etc) don't really apply to photography. Why are you considering them? Are you finding them for less money than their normal photography counterparts?
It's just curiosity. I like to mix mediums.
For the price thing... are old cine lenses expensive?
I like "vintage" photography lenses, I use the manual focus all the time and I don't mind not having af (AF is really great, but I find myself enjoing better the act of shooting with manual control of the camera, it's just a personal thing (also I shoot films a lot)) and you can find pretty fucking nice lenses for very little money sometimes.
Is it the same for cine lenses?
it would be nice to find other good economic lenses
>>2804152
>often less sharp.
>harder to focus without a follow focus.
>harder to select an aperture.
>more expensive.
Sure, go for it.
how do you feel about filters on photos?

Filter are similar to different types of film. You can use both to create different moods in your pictures. Using film to do this is obviously harder, as you need to decide which one to use prior...

Any personal experiences/warnings that anyone can give regarding Cinestill, (800T) specifically? I'm doing a photoshoot inspired by a film and figured using the actual filmstock used would be appropriate but I have my concerns since it's essentially a third party product and why it's rated at 800T when the original stock is 500T.
>>2802598

ive found it too ugly grained. i think portra 400 with good color toning (highlights to cyan, so you get it to be "T") might be a better bet.

Do you have any stills you can share showing off the grain?
Gear Thread
If you have questions about a new camera, what lenses to buy and anything related to gear or wondering about getting into photography, post it in this thread.
Do not attempt to make a new thread for your new Rabal, broken glass and being new.
No pointless (brand) arguments and dickwaving allowed! You have been warned!
I repeat, ANYTHING GEAR RELATED goes in here!

Canon EF-S 24mm f2.8.
The EXIF of that image confused the hell out of me until I figured out it was a DSLR scan.
>>2802075
Ha, why are you reposting my photo?
I took it with a Canon FDn 50/1.2L on 400ISO slide film.
If you want to do street photography at night I'd sooner recommend a flash.
What kind of bag do you use for your gear? I bought this at BH Photo while in NYC because the bag I had with me fell apart. I'm not a huge fan of this bag. Is there a hidden gem amongst gear bags out there? For example, something you could use while say shooting a wedding/can be brought on a plane as a "personal item"?
I do have a Pelican case for travel protection and whatnot, but I'd love a decent bag for field use.
>>2799209
i never use a bag that screams HEY LOOK IMA PHOTOGRAPHER I CARRY PRETTY EXPENSIVE ITEMS INSIDE PLEASE RAPE MY FACE AND STEAL MY SHIT. i use a backpack most of the time.

>>2799216

The camera will more than likely be in my hand ready to use so having a bag that pretends it is something else is pretty pointless.
Also
As soon as you take a tripod out you give the game away.
People don't steal bags just because they might have cameras in, they also steal them because they think they might have phones, tablets, credit cards, cash and other useful items. The camera bag that doesn't look like a camera bag is just a marketing ploy

I'd send them a few photos. Like the others said, it's a good reference and networking opportunity even if you only do it for fun. Plus, they'll remember you and be more likely to come to you for future photos.
After lurking several bodies of work from professionals, i notice that all of the images maintain the same size in like, 99%.
It's obvious that they have some solid capacity of framing directly in camera, but they also sacrifice some elements in some images to keep this consistent size?
How should i treat images that wouldnt work in this "chosen size"? what should i prioritize?
>fill a 64gb card everyday
>~2000 photos
>~730000 photos a year
>portfolio is usually <100 photos
there, if you have a certain "format" you just have to fit 0.000136% of your photos taken
You can always crop then enlarge.
I like the looks of 16:9 for landscape but think it is too tall for portrait, so crop to 8:10. I don't know if I have almost no shots that don't conform to those ratio/ orientation.
