go somewhere with no light pollution, that way the starts are brighter. If you use the same lens again next time, divide the focal length by 500 to determine the (rough) estimate in seconds that you have in order to avoid star trails. So basically, you got about 15-18 seconds to capture a good sky. Also, if you want to add the foreground with it, go somewhere where the ground will be lit for you, like near a high way, or use a flash light.

i see what you mean with the greens under HDR, i desaturated them a small amount because they were annoying and far too invasive imo but yeah they do go kinda weird, perhaps need a few more yellows. not sure about the warmer looking, i added oranges and yellows to the highlights but adding general warmth was taking away from it i felt. the photo was also took on a very shitty day, it looks sunny but the shadow are graduated filters and dodge/burns and the brighter spots are the same. wasn't the best of times for the shot but i probably could've done this better i agree.

That's pretty much spot on to what I was thinking. I was kicking myself because that was the only day I could go out and I had very limited time and it was very overcast. I really needed to get closer and my PP definitely didn't help and I really didn't get the exposure down well enough anyways

Let's be clear, and not beat around the bush. The only reason you'd post those photos for "r8-ing" is that you don't realize how terrible they are. If you don't realize that, it's because you A) Don't know what a good photo is, or B) You think it IS a good photo and are proud of it. If it's A, then there's no helping you yet, and if it's B, the only reason you'd think it is because you were proud to have accomplished the photo in the first place. So he's addressing the probability than you're only liking those because you're proud you took them by pointing out the fact that your pride doesn't translate into the photo, which is an attempt to help you grow to realize that just because you like a photo for a personal reason, your audience may not. It's an important step to understand if you want to improve.
If you know you're bad, don't get upset when someone implies that you're bad. If you don't want to be told that you're bad, stick to Facebook and Instagram, because this place starts with a helping of insult, and sometimes sprinkles on a bit of "constructive advice" as a garnish, if you're lucky. They're very very visually busy. Lots of distractions and contrasty objects all over the frame that are taking the viewer's eye away from your subject. The perspective is very boring and bland (crouching down, or getting up high might add some interest) The subjects themselves aren't exposed well (especially in the first image) and while the first is a half-hearted allusion to the Abby Road photo, it's much too sloppy to have pulled it off. The second image is just not interesting. Symmetry only really works when it's one of the only aspect in the image, and that's very much not the case for these. As it stands right now, there's definitely symmetry in there, but it's so standard and expected from those scenes that the viewer notices it, says "Yeah, obviously" and then continues looking for the reason the photo was taken. B&W is hurting the images because they're so much detail, but not enough variation in tone. It's all either dark, or light, without many gradations of gray in between. The second photo, for instance, the guy may stand out from the stand if the image were in color, but as it is, his dark jacket lets him get completely lost in the dark object behind him, and his head is lost in the busy contrast in the background. And even if we COULD see him clearly, he's not doing anything.
You need to approach your photos with a very clear "What is the purpose of this image? What's the draw? Why am I taking the photo?" Then your second set of questions is "Will anyone care to see the resulting image? If not, will the image make me happy enough personally to have taken it?" If yes, then look at the scene and find every single aspect of the composition that's not ACTIVELY supporting that vision, and get rid of it. Move around, zoom in, change your perspective, wait for things to get out of the way, etc.

Awesome advice, anon I greatly appreciate it. Generally speaking I think my landscape photos are "better" and more so worth sharing, I just don't have much fun doing it (even tho I live in pictureesque Colorado). It's a challenge to compose when a moment is only there for a few seconds, but I'll take your advice to heart. Generally I take like 100 pictures and pick out 2 or 3 I find the most compelling, but that's probably not the right mindset.

thanks man! the bright light int he distance is all a clump of lightning strikes, that night was epic. The photo was taken at 2 a.m to show you how bright it was that night
