I'd like to work in the translation industry after college, and specifically with either Arabic or Chinese since they're in demand. I'd also like to take a lot of literature classes in college since I'm really interested in the material. Would it be bad to major in literature and minor in a foreign language? I feel as if the foreign language would be easier to study by myself due to past experience, while more time in class with literature would be great just for knowledge's sake. I can get certified by the American Translator's Association which gives me even more credibility, and I'll be able to do all that I want.
Are there any holes in this plan?
Can you double major? Perhaps something like linguistics could be a good medium? All in all, you're probably not going to be able to translate to the best of your ability if you only get a minor in a foreign language

I've heard about double majoring but I really don't know enough specifics. From Google, apparently double majoring doesn't cost extra if you can make all required courses fit into a 4-year span well. It sounds like something I would do if it weren't too stressful. Anyone reading this get a double major?
My main fear is that if I minor in literature I'll miss out on a lot. If I can double major without ruining my finances or any amount of free time, that sounds ideal.

1. Get a 4 year degree in whatever you want
2. Fly to China and get a job teaching English
3. Once you've learned Chinese fly back home and start translating.
Tickets to China start at about $700 round trip. If you are as I guessed and have a degree then you can get a job as an English professor or private tutor in any city in the country. I was asked to be a professor of English at two schools in Qingdao, one in Beijing, and a teacher in Changsha, plus all the tutoring you could do on the side. You work 3 days a week, get free room/board, and starting wage is 12k yuan/month. If you don't travel you can save $1000/month while learning Mandarin through exposure. Then you just fly home and leverage your experience teaching and translating between the two along with your extensive knowledge of the culture. Mad money.

I want to reinvent myself. For a majority of my life, I've hated myself and always tried to be someone other than me. Even when i picture myself in my own mind, I conjure up the image of someone else. I'm not content in my own skin.
I have a stutter which essentially make me a shut in with very few close friends, but I want to change. I want to become a more independent, sociable, charismatic and confident person. I want to become a person who i can be proud of and confident in. I've been bullied, manipulated, and led on too many time.
I'm willing to do anything to change, but I want to change so much that i don't know where to start.

Write down a list of things you want to change about yourself.
Start by the easiest things to change (diet, training, waking up early, changing habits). Take time to get used to your new life. Like, change one thing per month.
Do things outside of your comfort zone to get more independent. Travel on your own, start a new sport, join a team, go back to school.

I quite like Duolingo. The Russian course was just completed. It's free, too.
The main Russian imageboard is 2-ch.su (at least it was quite active a few years ago ... haven't been there in a while. There's several others, too, and they're not hard to look for.)
If you've been studying for long at all I'm sure you've tried to watch a dubbed movie or TV show and noticed they do that annoying-as-fuck thing where they just overlay the Russian audio over the English. There are at least a couple high-quality American shows where they bothered to do real professional dubs (the first couple of seasons of Game of Thrones, at least. LOST too I think? And a couple others. Maybe Breaking Bad.) You want to search for "[show's name in Russian] пoлнoe дyблиpoвaниe." I just ripped the audio from a bunch of shows, basically making little 50-min radio plays, and listened to them in the car, following along from my memory of the English until I realized I was actually starting to understand. I recommend doing this well before you think you're ready to; it'll still help.
As regards the grammar, I'm not fluent, but I can read a newspaper without referring to a dictionary and make myself understood with minimal spaghetti droppage, and I never studied the fucking cases. Like, a little bit, so I recognized them and knew basically what they were for, but I never fucking drilled them. Mostly I just learned phrases from flash cards and eventually patterns started to emerge and I realized I was just going by what sounded 'right' or 'wrong' and it worked pretty well. Like, it was honestly a surprise to me when I learned that the 7-letter rule (и instead of ы after certain letters) had a name. I was like, "Oh. I just thought that's how it was." I strongly recommend learning this way; it's less stressful and more fun and, in my opinion, more efficient too.
I'll post more if I think of anything. It's a bitch of a language, I seriously found Mandarin easier, but it's also pretty colorful and fun.
