It's correct that the old Trilogy is more important for understanding the plot of Episode VII. The prequels just tell the story before the happenings during the civil war in episode 4,5 and 6. But i really recommend you to watch the whole saga to get the real Star Wars feeling. The best episode of the prequels is 3 because it shows how Anakin Skywalker turns into Darth Vader.
