I wouldn't say it's "normal". It's indicative of deeper issues. If your parents don't make an effort to get you to open up - an effort to understand you and show that they support you, it can make you close off. Kids are supposed to be able to depend on their parents for emotional support and if that's not available or if they perceive it's not available, kids will close off. This leads to depression, teenage angst, anxiety etc.
I assume when you closed off your parents didn't make much of an effort to get you to open up? Or did they try and you were simply uncomfortable with it?
I've got a similar thing, but I attribute it mostly to the fact my parents never were really "parents" to me.
Four messy divorces before I was 12 and custody under my mother who worked full-time and sang full-time pretty much meant I was left totally alone most of the time and very detached from them as "family"

How realistic would it be for me (31 years old) to learn how to play the piano and make a career out of it?
I'm not talking about just learning how to play as a hobby, but rather learning how to play and then make money off my talent..

I'm definitely in the camp that thinks it would be possible, but don't expect to become a concert pianist or anything.
Start by signing yourself up for some lessons to find out whether you're ready to commit to actually learning and playing the piano. It would probably take at least 9 years of regular, efficient practice to become really good at it, so don't quit your day job.
Not impossible, but the odds are extremely slim. Even people who are incredibly skilled at piano aren't making a killing off of it. After three years of serious practice you could easily charge parents $30/hr to teach their kids. So I guess it just depends on how good you want to become.

If you cut ties, and ABSOLUTELY cut ALL ties, without fail, you will have a much easier time moving on. I understand it will be difficult, but see it this way - you invested in someone and it was a bad investment. Would you keep putting resources into a bad investment knowing it's only going to cause you greater loss? Or would you cut your losses and look for better potential in the future?

I'm 19 and want to move out. I currently live with my mother and her boyfriend. No need to tell my sob-story, but suffice it to say my living situation is much less than ideal.
I make $12/hr and work 30 hours a week. However the problem is that because of my lack of credit I can't even get approved to live in an apartment that is $500/month. My only potential room mate right now is my girlfriend, but she is 17, and therefore cannot sign on a lease.

Drive around for awhile, keeping close to a service station. If a lot of blue smoke comes out of your tailpipe, you put in too much oil.
The starting problem seems to me to be unrelated.
You generally need to warm the engine up a bit before checking the oil to get an accurate read on the level. Plus it was probably a bogus thing to check for trouble starting anyway. I'd sooner be looking at battery voltage.
