Try holding volume up+volume down and the power button when you start. I think you should be able to tell it just to boot from recovery mode. But I'm not sure. Regardless a factory reset isn't that bad. She loses her application data (mainly have to reinstall apps) but most of her stuff will remain. Photos and such most certainly should. If you finished a sentence and had no 'hooks' in the conversation then interrupting right there is free. If you instead let hooks run throughout what you're saying you're gonna almost always be able to say 'hey I was talking don't interrupt'.
