I was hired for my first job as a cashier at a gas station. Two years later I was assistant manager. One year after that, I used my assistant manager title to apply for general manager jobs elsewhere and got one rather quickly.
It's also a excellent way to de-robot yourself, or at least learn how to pretend that you have. I was incredibly, cringefully awkward for years but eventually you're forced to interact with people enough that you learn to fake it.
