This is Boruto Quest, a quest set in the universe of Naruto. It is during the generation of Naruto's son, shortly after everyone has graduated from their Genin exam. I haven't kept up with the series beyond the end of the original one, so this one is intended to recapture the feel of that time of Naruto. I will not be incorporating the main show or the Boruto movie's plot into the quest, although some recognizable characters will be present. You play as a 12 year old Chunin graduate named Takeshi. You have been assigned a Jounin squad leader named Hanto, and your two squadmates are Kichiro, a young delinquent, and Ai, a strange social outcast of a girl. You are of average skill in most aspects, although your sharp intelligence, and your jack of trades skill set have brought you far. You have just recently graduated to a Chunin after winning the final tournament, and it is several days after. You're returning from your most recent mission.

JOY!!
>>
You all head back home first thing, feeling refreshed from the battle. Another successful mission leaves you with a smile on your face as your squad returns home, uninjured and in good spirits. Before doing anything else, you head home and start to compile a report for the Hokage on your mission. As this is your first time doing this, it takes you a little longer than normal. You carefully look over the forms and make sure you've properly filled out the necessary information. On your way out, you notice that your brother isn't home.

Once you're done, you head off to the Hokage's Office, and after a brief wait enter the door. He's seated at the desk, the traditional Hokage hat sitting to his right. It's not often you see Naruto in the Hokage's robes. You imagine that he simply intended to stay in the office all day, probably filling out paperwork. He sets down his pencil and looks up, smiling. "Hello, Takeshi. Glad to see you've safely returned."

You step forward, and place your report on the table. "Thank you, Lord Hokage. The mission was a complete success. In addition, we managed to eliminate one of the leaders of the insurgent forces in the Land of Wind."

Naruto grins even wider, and nods. "Hehehe, it's just like before with Makoto, except this time you were on your own. I'm very impressed."
>>
>>45805237
A thought crosses your mind as you bow in thanks, and return to your normal stance. "Lord Hokage, why is it that there are so many rogue shinobi in the Land of Wind?"

Naruto places his elbows on the table, and folds his hand before resting his chin on them. He looks oddly grim. "It's not exactly a simple issue of crime, like it is in other areas. Due to the hostile climate of the Land of Wind, it's mostly their expansive borders that have become swarmed with rogue shinobi from all over the world. The uninhabited area is becoming a sort of badlands, and it's not easy to deal with when you've already got a country having issues maintaining a steady supply of food for it's growing populous."

Welcome one, and I welcome you all to the tale of a world called Thespia.

Here is the odyssey of one that clings to this world with no face of their own! In a place where magic is fundamental to all of creation, all who live wear their lives upon their face, where a fire might wish to be the cooking fire of an inn!

The Faceless overcame the tyrant lord of Bikel, Stephan Grant, son of Mikael Grant. Thus, while wearing the face of the vengeful spirit "The Reaper of Aurel" otherwise known as Dramir, a story in the world of Thespia comes to an end as a hero arrives to deliver the accursed Guisi from their fates of enslavement and labor.

Yet despite this success, a shadow of doubt looms upon the horizon as the Reaper claimed victory from Lord Grant whilst in his Arche's true form, a secret kept by the Guisi at all costs for fear of true persecution at the hands of other Thespians.

Yet the curtain has closed upon that story and a sibling pair grow restless as they hear the whispers of the Guisi elders and their intent to make the Reaper disappear to ensure that there are no loose ends.

"We will not see our work undone."

In the mild warmth of Sol's Midday in the time of Atumm, you hold desperately onto an Araflour child as you fall from the canopies of the little hamlet of Prudenia, the forest floor fast approaching from a crippling height. Your heart races as you reach out with all of your feeling, searching for someone, anything to help you and this child from suffering this fall.

(“I don't want broken legs!”) Belia cries out fro within, as you feel your eyes close from her fear.

Suddenly, you feel something reach out to you in return and you feel branches and leaves bending around you before curling gently around you and the child, holding you fast and steady. {“My, my, I must be going senile... How could I let an Araflour child fall? And my, Namour... Such a brave heroinne.”} an old voice hums out from around you.

As you open your eyes and feel, you find yourself in the hand-like branches of one of the trees, slowly creaking its way back up to safely pass you up to the canopy.

“Oh thank you, thank you kind tree.” You say with tears of relief wetting your eyes, “Thank you, thank you.”

The child clutching you, looks up at you and frowns deeply, remiss. You feel something wet against your stomach.

“Did you?”

“I peed.” The child admits, and you can't help but to shiver in disgust.

“Beli, are you okay?” You hear Odette cry from a distant Bridge-branch, the concern wrought over her face with wrinkling worry.

“Yes, I'll just need a change of clothes.” You answer back as you gently, but firmly push the child off of you and stand up yourself, hopping off the branch of the tree. Pinching your garments, you peel the wetness away as you wrinkle your nose in dismay.

A woman opens the door from a nearby treehouse and looks right at you and the araflour child, “Oh my,” her voice rings out with a melodious tenderness, “Are the two of you alright? I felt a disturbance...”
>>
>>45803879

The child runs to his mother, hugging her hard, “I f-fell, and this lady saved me.”

The woman looks to you with eyes twinkling in admiration, “Oh, my good lady, thank you for saving my child.”

“Don't... Uh, mention it.” Your voice is less than pleased as you try to figure out what you're to do with your soiled garments.

“What, uh, happened? Are you well my lady.. Oh.” The woman looks down at her child, frowning slighty, and then smiling with a calm understanding. She extends a hand to beckon you inside, “Come, I'll help you with that. It's the least I can do.”

You change into much humbler clothes obviously designed with humility and modesty in mind. A brown dress with earthen tones and the stains of leaves for a natural color. The attire comes with a hood that these Arafleur seem so keen on wearing.

You learn that the child's name is Arthe, and his mother's is Jiria. You don't see a man in the household...

For all you GMs out there - where did you learn how to GM? What sort of style did you start with? Did you have to start from scratch on your own, or did you have some GM's in the past to look back to and learn from how they did things?
39 posts and 9 images submitted.
>>
I learned by playing in a ton of shit games, and making a conscious choice to not do any of the things all the shit DMs out there did that made their games terrible.

I assume you're not used to self-criticism and standards, so that probably won't work for you.
>>

I was just asking since I'm curious how GMs learn the specific style of DMing they use. I'm not asking for advice.

I learned out of necessity, by looking at how other people did their games on /tg/ and elsewhere. I used a starter set adventure to get a gist for it, too.

Before I GM'd I had only been to a handful of games in high school and barely remembered them.

I'm not sure if I have a style, but I prefer to have a fun story that leads the players to build up in character and making significant changes. So I guess roleplaying is what I care about the most, with combat here and there for some hot sweaty action. I dig storytelling, but I hope for the players to make choices of their own, not just hopping in my train as if going on a tour.

"Right, right... I think everyone could stand to explain themselves," Irene said just a moment ago. You, her, and the rest of your few allies who were able to warp into Gravern Keep now stare down Wes, memories recently awakened, and Empress Kia.

"Right... Explanations. You first. What brought you here?" Wes asks.

"Same thing as you," Ansi answers before Irene can get another word out, "teleportation."

"I... Meant more the 'why' than the 'how,' Ansi," Wes responds, his glasses shining for a moment, "and I was asking Irene."

"Well, I mean... We'd heard from Zlatan that you'd come here, and were curious..." Irene responds.

"Nothin' more to it than that," Riga adds.

"Nothing more..." Wes responds, frowning and pointing to Ellen in an accusatory manner, "then why is SHE here?"

"I... volunteered," Ellen says.

"And I know for a fact you would like nothing more to kill me," Wes responds. "After Lloyd and Leigh over there risked their lives to help me escape you..." He turns towards you and Leigh, clearly addressing you two with a hint of sadness. "Do you guys... Not trust me?"

Your name is Amy Nakamura, a 17 year old void Oni, and right now you’re cleaning up your backyard. Which you kinda destroyed testing out your Oni powers, whooooops.

It’s about noon and it’s already incredibly hot and humid, you usually like the humidity and relatively warm Houston weather, but right now it’s making your task infinitely harder. Your dad’s behavior isn’t exactly helping your rapidly diminishing disposition either. He’s sitting in a lawn chair watching while drinking sweet tea… The bastard. Your mom is currently asleep, and you think Trish is as well due to her quest to find a wizard over the internet taking up a lot of time last night. You think she stayed up well into the morning looking, which normally wouldn’t bother you, but 6 am is a bit much for anyone.

“C’mon now girl, put your back into it. That grass ain’t gonna set itself.” You dad hollers at you from his chair with a smug smile. Fuck he isn’t making this any easier, grass pallets are a pain in the ass to carry. You grunt in acknowledgement and hoist three more pallets into your arms. They weren’t particularly heavy, but their awkward shape compounded with all the dirt falling off of them made this whole task a bitch. You quickly move them off of the truck bed and then fill the few remaining spots in the lawn.

Whew, that was a bitch.

The pealing of the bells subside, leaving naught but echoes and ghost sounds lingering in the air. You peer between the trees of the grove out at the city skyline and listen, muscles tense. Pascala perks her ears and listens for danger, piqued by your concern. Kyra begins to slowly pace deep in thought. A mood of uncertain confusion grips you as you ponder what to do.

You listen for the sound of distant combat or the sight of Seaside guardsman frantically moving. For a few indecisive seconds you hesitate, caught between a dozen different actions as ideas flow through your war-conditioned brain.

Kyra angles her face to look back towards you. She starts to speak.

“We should –”

You feel Pascala's animal instincts build into dread in what seems like minutes before you hear the rumbling growl from her throat. Kyra stops her curt advice mid-sentence as she notices. Kyra almost imperceptibly shifts her stance. You focus on your surroundings.

The chittering warnings of an agitated familiar at your side.

The feel of hard wood as you grip the hilt of your saber.

The faint whiff of rotten eggs overpowering the fresh scent of the grove.

They're coming alright.

After that, buy 6 boosters each and make a deck. Make a deal with your friend you'll each buy a booster to tweak your deck every other week, and boom, your both playing casual MtG.

Just making a fucking blood oath not to buy singles or more packs than another, or it'll become a money game. Happened with our group and most of them quit because of it.

No matter how long you stare at the corpse, you can't find anything that could prove that it isn't you. No matter how much your sharp eyes look for that one discrepancy that could separate you from the dead man bleeding on the floor, you can't see it.

Just what is going on? You don't want to keep staring at it, but a sinking feeling is forcing you to hold your gaze.

There has to be something...

Something...!

The only differences you find, ones that you stumble upon over and over in the vain attempts to spot something important, are menial: different clothes, scrapes and bruises, the slightly longer hair, thinner musculature... This person may have lead a lifestyle different from that of a Shinigami, but even so, the more you examine him, the firmer your initial conclusion becomes.

This is you.

Without a doubt, you were killed here last night.

You never knew that it could be so hard to believe factual evidence. But how? No, rather, why? Is this Shingen's work? He couldn't find you directly, so he used a body double to issue a threat? No, that's ridiculous. Perfect body doubles can't exist. There are no two people identical to one another down to the last bone. To add to that, there was too little time to organize such a feint. And more than that, this person is truly dead. If this was an intimidation maneuver, they wouldn't have actually killed this man.

Could this person be your twin, and this occurrence completely coincidental? It's common for families to be separated in Soul Society after their death, so could this be your brother from the time you were alive? The odds of such a thing happening are maybe just one meager step short of absolutely impossible.

Is making corpses like these an ability of Shingen's? Of one of his subordinates? Allies? That seems much more probable...

Tthat's probably the solution, so why... why is your heart still beating so wildly?

...There's no more time to think about this here. You've spent too much time examining the body already. At the very least, you shouldn't be seen right next to this corpse.

Unwilling to take any chances at bumping into the inn's clientele, you jump out of the window.

You need to... continue the mission. Shingen must be thinking that he got you, so you should use that advantage and keep an eye on him until the reinforcements arrive.

You don't want to talk to anyone about this. You wish you could just remove any traces of that corpse, but doing that would attract too much attention. ...Perhaps it really might be for the best if you just let it drop.

...

In the cold light of morning, it's hard to see this as anything other than a loss. Not a total disaster, true, but you'd struggle to call it a victory either.

You were sent here, to the Dragon's Head, for two reasons. To spread the spirit of cooperation, first of all, with a speech celebrating the next generation. Secondly, to gather information about a young priestess, a girl whose future marriage might have held the key to restoring stability to the land. The speech never had a chance to start – a sudden flurry of gunfire ensured that – while Miura, the girl you were sent to speak with, vanished into the chaos of the unfolding war. A hostage now, if the note left behind is any truthful indication.

Overall, you'd say it ended about as well as your holidays usually end.

Now, several hours since the short burst of frantic action, you're waiting for Tawn – the Emperor's representative here – to finish sweeping up. He's performed well, far better than you'd been expecting, and the town is slowly beginning to recover. Your job, though, is just getting started.

“I count thirty nine civilians dead,” Tawn tells you bluntly, “Most of those due to being trampled or caught in the panic. Some, a few, were shot. Lastly, a number of them died due to some unknown gas – we thought it was smoke inhalation at first, but it a little more serious than that. We're not sure where this poison gas came from yet.”

Thirty nine dead civilians, you repeat numbly, and how many of his soldiers?

“Eight,” Tawn frowns as he says this, “All shot multiple times. These bastards fought like devils – and they vanished like ghosts afterwards!”

It's hard to blame him for the bitterness creeping into his voice. Save for a few bloodstains, and even those might have come from wounded civilians, the nameless attackers left nothing behind that they didn't want you to see. No bodies, no discarded weapons, not even a scattering of bullet casings. Just as Tawn said – they vanished like ghosts.

“I've studied war, rebellions, all kinds of conflict,” Tawn continues, “But these tactics are like nothing I've studied. How can we fight an enemy like this, when we can't even tell them apart from the civilians we're supposed to be protecting?”

Focus, you tell him wearily, you both need to focus on what little information you've managed to gather. Your next job is to track down Miura and rescue her, there has to be some lead to get you started on her trail. Where, though, should you start?
