What do you guys think of Gygax's prose?

Personally I can't stand it. It feels like I'm listening to a Grognard talk about his game instead of actually reading a rulebook. And most surprising of all is the fact that his word count is gigantic, yet the fluff is minimal. As in he is overtly descriptive about things that could be better explained with fewer words, yet there's very little imagery and colorful narrative in the rulebooks.

I think the man had a great imaginative mind; he could come up with great rules, but he wasn't too good about making a rulebook out of them.

I have had similar thoughts. I think his influence on early roleplaying culture may have been somewhat overstated. especially when you consider how bad his post dnd rpgs were.
>>
>>45722041

I think he deserves the praise; he did come up with tons of cool things, BUT I think it's really weird that he's the face of old school TTRPG and considered the father of it, when I believe Arneson was the one who really came up with the actual idea of playing roles and exploring dungeons and all that.

Lets talk about non-d20 systems and other mechanically unique trpgs. If there are systems I don't include in my first few posts that you wanna talk about please write a few sentences on what the basic mechanics of the system are and what it tries to accomplish through play. My hope is to help expand what systems players, new and old, are comfortable trying.

Have you tried D&D?
>>
>>45721596

System list:
- Two player
>Murderous Ghosts - Mixture of CYOA and push your luck mechanics. One person plays a ghost trying to kill the other player. Play is aimed at making PC's feel equal parts terrible people and SPOOKED

>S/lay w/me – Play is organized in a series of turns where pushing the narrative forward is rewarded mechanically. Players take turns sharing the narrative between the HERO the LOVER and the MONSTER. Play is aimed at making players feel torn between love and the hero’s journey. Players switch GM responsibility for future adventures.

-Three player
>a place to fuck – Mechanics are loosely organized to encourage the third wheel player organically creating obstacles between the other two players. 1 player is the obstacle between a gay romance and the other two are trying to fuck. Play rotates every scene so players are encouraged to amp up the frustrations in the PC’s lives.

>The Wandering Vagrant – Mechanics are a mixture between poker, bluffing, and making narrative demands. Players are divided as THE DEVIL, THE MAN(god), and THE VAGRANT all players are vying for the soul of a wandering vagrant in a halfway town. Play is aimed at letting players explore the forces of individualism (vagrant), disruption (devil), and conformity (god).
>>
>>45721620

-Three to Five
>Midsummer Nights – Mechanics are performance judging and narrative demands. 1 Player is a human trying to win the grace of one of the other player’s fairy characters through structured goading. Players who are not in each scene judge the conversation between players and may punish them with narrative demands for being dull or not playing aggressively. Play is aimed at pushing characters into demands that they would rather weasel out of.

>Polaris (4+ players) – Mechanics are negotiation and narrative demands. All players each play difference narrative forces 1 purity, 1 degeneracy, 2 judges in a knights of the round table setting. Players each rotate between the different forces for each scene with purity and degeneracy resolving conflicts through a “one up” style mechanic (on player makes a statement the other adds unpleasant consequences and then haggling happens). The mood is aimed at a inevitable tragedy that will either kill the knights or corrupt them into a jaded existence.

>Shock!: social science fiction – Mechanics are roll over/under and mutual world creation. Players each champion a IRL social concern then add a science fiction element (cloning, mind transfer, teleportation) and world together to build the social systems that support it each session. Players are paired as Protagonists and Antagonists between each other and work toward answering questions about their characters through play. The game is both character drama and world building each session.

"All personnel be advised, primary objective is now to investigate Slaaneshi activity among House Vandarr and her holdings."

"Carry on."

Were casters more balanced in previous editions in D&D?
47 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
Hardly. They leveled up slower, but there were a ton of spells that made you essentially invulnerable to non-casters.

Remember, just about every major designer's pet character was a wizard.
>>
>>45720970
Significantly so.
They took longer to level up and spells had actual casting times, especially more powerful ones, and if you were hit while casting them the spell was GONE, full stop, no saves required.

All this on top of Wizards basically being a wet paper bag in terms of durability.
>>
>>45720970
No, they just died easier, which mattered less since life was cheap and you just played your character with different stats and first letter to their name.

>>45721026
This actually didn't mean a damn thing when once you got your spell off, you ended a combat. Especially since blasting was a viable life choice (and you could still get classically good spells like Sleep, Color Spray and Hold X).

Caster balance was maintained in the same way all D&D balance was back in those days: DM fiat and heavy mind caulking.

>>
I made this https://youtu.be/_e6p0AMW4y8 for my players and wrote a paragraph as introduction for the setting.
>>
>>45719963
Our campaign started in a tavern (well technically a brothel, but they served alcohol), but I also wrote several primers for the campaign detailing the recent history and important figures the characters would know about.

how do you subvert your players expectations for a fantasy race without destroying what made it more than "humans with green skin/pointy ears/beards"? The more I try to be original with my take on the classics, the more I feel like I'm just making various shades of humans in cosplay.

Pic related was the inspiration for an attempt at making forest dwarves, which just ended up being short elves with beards and a grumpy attitude.

Why should I feel the need to subvert expectations for a race?
>>
>>45719933
well, isn't it a little boring if every elf in every setting is the same?
>>
>>45720009
That's the point of standard fantasy you mong. A standard setting with familiar peoples and themes and environments but totally undefined characters, geopolitics, and locations for the dm to alter at will.

I feel like just two weeks ago the forum was clogged with threads like How's your First Cleric and What kind role do Goblins fulfill in your setting? Lately it's been about specific types of Table Top Games.
Lets keep posting generic questions about your setting, your characters, and how you play, huh?
Is there a difference between Light Magic and Healing Magic in your game? Necromancy and Dark Magic? Does Hydromancy require Pyromancy and Cryomancy talent to be cast or is it it's own thing? Have you ever wanted to retire your character to a peaceful place after they fulfilled their life goal instead of killing him off or raising him into godhood? Do y'all conaider how Hobgoblins are always tougher, bigger Goblins when the're supposed to be much more kind and reasonable Goblins according to Folklore? Do y'all hate Monks, Druids, and sometimes even Clerics who are always talking about Auras, Chi, and some type of Tea thats supposed to help you medically? Keep posting fa/tg/uys.

Reminder that 'mancy' means divination and using it as a generic term for 'magic of' is objectively wrong.

Let's create a Kingdom, /tg/!

What was our Kingdom famous for?

>It's Agriculture, it's farms were some of the greatest around.
>It's Military Might, none dared challenge it.
>It's Mercantile Power, they controlled the Wealth.
>It's Culture, others were envious for how the Arts flourished there.
>It's Magic, some of the greatest Magical Minds came from there.

It's technology, it's one of the few nations that have managed to get it's hands on intact pieces of tech from the old world.
>>
>>45712264
Its monstergirls and monsterboys whom everyone in the other nations want to take as their brides, thereby instigating a cycle of miscegenation.
>>
>>45712529
Yes, of course! It's technology, the Kingdom has been able to reclaim pieces of the Old World's technology and use it to advance themselves. Of course!

What is the kingdom's demeanor?
>Hostile and Imperious, they feel the need to conquer and "enlighten" all who would oppose them.
>Isolationist and Intelligent, they stay away from the matters of other Kingdoms and keep to themselves, trying to increase their knowledge of the Old World's tech.
>Defensive and Prideful, their borders have always been closed off to other Kingdoms, with any sort of meetings or trade happening in neutral grounds or out-the-way outposts.
>Peaceful and Kind, they feel that as the most advanced of the Kingdoms, they should aid those in need, and are known for their kindness to the "Good" people of the kingdoms.

This is Boruto Quest, a quest set in the universe of Naruto. It is during the generation of Naruto's son, shortly after everyone has graduated from their Genin exam. I haven't kept up with the series beyond the end of the original one, so this one is intended to recapture the feel of that time of Naruto. I will not be incorporating the main show or the Boruto movie's plot into the quest, although some recognizable characters will be present. You play as a 12 year old Chunin graduate named Takeshi. You have been assigned a Jounin squad leader named Hanto, and your two squadmates are Kichiro, a young delinquent, and Ai, a strange social outcast of a girl. You are of average skill in most aspects, although your sharp intelligence, and your jack of trades skill set have brought you far. You have just recently graduated to a Chunin after winning the final tournament, and it is several days after. Your next mission as a Chunin is underway

PREVIOUS THREADS: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Hot-Blooded%20Henshin%20Hero%20Quest

LAST TIME: We gained the power of the Phoenix, and the Being of Truth, becoming its Avatar, in a battle against the four other beings. Additionally, we came upon a conspiracy of someone manipulating the unionized heroes and the criminals to turn a profit. Among other things, Makoto is being targeted.

AND NOW...

---

You wake with a smile on your face and quickly get up to dress. Today's a momentous day, after the exhilarating rush that was yesterday.

Your exam day to become a member of the Peacekeeper's Union!

You chug your half-full bottle of orange juice, dropping it in the trash once it's drained, and quickly lace up your sneakers. You weren't told whether to show up in costume or not, but...it's kind of assumed.

Rushing through the rest of your wardrobe for light wear, you move in a total blur. Perhaps its the Phoenix working in your mind, but your motivation towards your goals has leapt a thousandfold, if you had to guess. It felt great.

Digging your hands deep in an open box of cereal, you take two scoops and shove them in your mouth before rushing out the door to the exam center just north of the HQ.

As you run up, you notice a young man with strikingly blonde hair running up alongside you in a tracksuit--it wouldn't be wrong to presume he's also going in for examination.

>Greet him.
