I do almost all of my roleplaying these days over IRC, mostly on the Sup/tg/ IRC server. I have a hub channel I run, a group of friends who are reliable and either good players or GMs, and a lot of fun games in a variety of systems.

A lot of people sneer at digital text RP as a lesser medium compared to IRL tabletop stuff, but I think both have their advantages. While IRL is faster and a more social experience, I've actually come to prefer online RP. The ability to separate IC and OOC into different channels is great for allowing immersion, and one of the biggest things is having logs. In IRL games, you can take notes, but you can't record everything, and even if you record the audio it's hard to search for something to check a detail or what was said.

With a text log? Everything that ever happened in the game is available. I can go back to check on something, or just read old logs for a nostalgia trip, to remember good times I had with my friends.

I always really liked the concept of the Deathwatch. It brings together marines from all sorts of chapters to work together, and while they share the unity of black armor they still keep their chapter symbol on their shoulder to give each one some uniqueness.

There are a lot of cool stories that could be told between cross-chapter brotherhood and such. Maybe I'll actually get this shit.

I don't think dungeons should just be about mayhem and violence, but yeah, like investigation/detective scenarios and dream sequences riddles just don't work in RPGs.

That's how I used to do things, but I found it took many hours longer for less helpful prep when it came time to actually play.

These days the #1 thing (and sometimes only thing) I do is prep a web map. A bunch of circles with each location/likely person to seek out in them, and lines connecting them to other things. I label all the lines between the nodes to show what clue they are, what piece of information leads from one to the next, and make sure there are at least 3 ways out of and 3 ways into each...

I basically have 2 notbooks. 1 has stuff the players know or can see without ruining the surprises. The other has the surprises, along with world details, important plot points, and stat lines for generic monsters I can throw at them.
