I've played it, the alpha is promising so far, the combat is RTS and I dunno if they'll implement proper turnbased combat. Espionage hasn't been implemented yet and there's only 6 races in so far but it plays pretty much exactly like you'd imagine a modern MoO game would if made by today's standards once you get past the "Alpha Build" issues.

It was Eclipse Phase.

I didn't quite grasp the setting so basically gave the PCs a copy of the Normandy from the ME vidya game series.

Highlights include my "badass" helper NPC getting shot to almost death in one round and having to puss out, an MG called "The Masticator" (which could only fire full-auto), and their ship being sabotaged by invisible ninjas (the ninjas shot their cyber-hound to death).

I think it was good, it was enough to make me fall in love with EP forever and a friend of mine still cites the moment on the ship where they realized something was amiss as one of his RPG highlights.

My first time was pretty fucking rad

Luckily I've since learned how to improvise and now I'm DMing my own campaign.

Oh sweet, bitter coffee, how I've missed you! I smile happily, drinking down another cup of fresh, almost inky black coffee, wincing as it it tingles my tongue with its burning warmth. The shopkeeper looks at me from behind the counter, looking a bit on edge for some reason, maybe it's because of the murderous pirate tied onto the stool next to me, who we just had to knock out again after he woke back up.

Ajax tries to get my attention, looking up at me next to the plate that used to have a piece of fish pie on it, mewling loudly.

I wince and rub my left shoulder, as it starts to ache and hurt again. I look back at where I got hit just a couple of minutes ago, is my coat's arm getting redder or is it just my imagination? either way it still hurts, more than anything, the weird thumping I feel and the dull yet somehow sharp pain feeling like a finger cut that just expanded.

I shake my head, don't want to think about that anymore, I probably should get some rest but...I don't want to, and besides I have work to do here still, and I'm pretty sure Captain would throw me back onto or through the ship if he found me sleeping on the job.

"Well this is a real pickle I've found myself in" I sigh as I rub my shoulder "Isn't it?"

"I wouldn't know?" The shopkeeper says, shrugging as his thin mustache droops down his fat face

What do I do?

This is a thread for all the bad habits you've developed as a player/GM and for discussing ways to break them.

When describing a room I have a tendency to only focus on things that are important to the immediate problem the PCs are facing, letting the players fill in the blanks by simply saying what kind of room they're in. It really kills investigative games.

I'm trying to fix this by making lists of miscellaneous items that would reasonably be in the rooms in whatever building the PCs are in when I prep for games. Sometimes if I'm out and not really doing anything I think about how I would describe wherever I am as I would if I were describing it to my players. It's difficult to be consistently mindful of smaller details while keeping track of everything else that goes into running a game but I think I'm getting better, my players seem to find investigation heavy games more rewarding lately.

I know, its bad to being a good RPG player, but i'm not going to kill a harmless toddler in a game just because I can or because the GM would allow it. Just because the option is open, doesn't mean you have to take it.

Am I wrong in thinking like this? Am I just a bad player?

I actually wish that was something my players did more. They are all too willing to take extreme measure if they think the ends justify the means. I encourage inter party drama and arguing as long as it stays in the game, it's pretty boring when players are satisfied being killbots.

My bad habit is that I'm a loot happy bitch who would rather collect interesting items than anything else.

It doesn't even have to be valuable loot. Anything that the DM describes that I find interesting grabs my kender-like attention and refuses to let go. Pirate captain's fancy hat, shiny piece of bandit armor, unicorn skull, et cetera.

I have no plans to fix this, I fully accept my curse. Now gimme the fancy silverware and no-body gets hurt!

It's honestly a tough system to break, combat wise. You can really capitalize on a race/class combo with custom backgrounds (pick your own skill proficiency and feats, and even those can be custom). You can optimize into one type of combat and just really shine through. I'd be interested in seeing classes 'tiered' like they were in 3.5, but that's a different discussion.

With your tremendous intuitive understanding of the female gender /tg/, tell me, how do you play a female character well?

See my group is about to start a new 5e campaign and I've been contemplating playing a female fighter. Our group being a sausage feast all of our previous female characters were played pretty much identical to male characters and so were female in name only. I don't want to go in that direction, but neither do I want to put on a silly falsetto voice and be stereotypical girly girl, particularly seen as a female fighter would already be breaking gender role in pseudo medieval society.

What sort of preparation can I do to get in my character's head?

To play a female character all you need to do is play a character. Come up with her hopes and ambitions and follow them. Gender doesn't play a huge role. Unless you are trying to make a seductive character in which case don't.

While it's still in alpha/beta I'm relatively sure Naval action is a pretty good game. Though it doesn't let you take control of a buccaneer - it's more you controlling your crew as you do... stuff. Pretty good, IMO.
