Hear ye, hear ye, I call to order another meeting of the Mage Guild. On the agenda for today: the Guild of Rangers, Woodsmen, and Frontiersmen has produced an interguild request, signed by five other guilds, that we change the name of the spell "Magic Missile." Their complaint is that "missile" is the genericized name for any projectile, such as arrows and bolts, used in spells like "Protection from Missiles," making the spell's name ambiguous, since it provides no protection against the spell Magic Missile.
Now, I'm old enough to remember when we still called it "Elminster's Quasi-Magical Semi-Violet Self-Defense Spheres Numbering Between One and Five," and you'll all remember that I violently opposed the name change to begin with. Thus, I am greatly in favor of the Rangers' proposition. Do we have any dissenters?
Magic Missile is an Iconic spellname and it would be far better to change Protection from missiles and its Ilk instead!
Frankly I feel the fact that you opposed the name change in the first place puts the motion under suspicion. How can anyone be sure you didn't "Suggest" the idea of this request to those poor gullible woodsmen?
>>45841366
I am also in favour, it would reduce the redundancy in my department as well! Though we're sort of using 'self defense sphere' as a generic term for any spells that use, well, spheres and are violent in nature. Suramakh's Slightly Scalding Self Sufficient Sphere of Succour, 'Fire Shield' in the parlance of the brute and the fighter, for example.
>>45841366
I suggest 'Mighty Magic Mages' Missile for Meetings with Malevolent Minions'
Then it can be easily noted down using only a zigzag. Much more convenient for record-keeping.

"No, they actually are evil as shit"

You are Sarah Karlsen, Valkyrie of Sweden, and daughter of Odin.
Everything hurts.
Your entire body aches, the worst of it deciding to reside in your head. Each moments passes with a thud resounding within the base of your skull. You open your eyes and immediately regret it, pain flaring from your vision as blinding light shines in your face. You blink several times and the light begins to fade and clear. You find yourself staring up at a cloudy blue sky.
You lean up, finding yourself lying in a grassy field, without a soul around you. The wind gently rustles the grass around you, and you close your eyes briefly to enjoy the cooling sensation.
Then the wind begins to pick up, and you hear the fluttering of wings. Opening your eyes, you look up to see nothing but clouds. However, the sound grows nearer and nearer, until it seems as if it's directly above you.
Then the beast seems to appear all at once, as if from thin air.
It stands impossibly large, far larger than even the Teuton Knight. Its scales are a dulled gray, faded marks along its chest hinting at wounds and battles long forgotten. It hangs in the air a brief moment, then descends. It lands, not with a thundering crash, but with a near gentle ease.
It stares down at you, golden eyes shining.
You struggle to stand, your muscles still aching. However, stand you do.
(Cont.)

Before you speaks a deep voice, tinged with a mix of disgust and disbelief. The dragon looks to the sky, eyes narrowed in accusation.
"Is this my fate?" The beast asks. "To become servant of a pup, hardly able to stand?"
The sky does not answer, causing it to huff, defeated. With that it returns its attention back to you.
"What is your name, pup?" It asks.
"Sarah," You answer. "Who...what...are you?"
"I am Sigmund," The dragon answers proudly, wings extending to their full length. "Master of the skies, Demon of the Isle, and Bringer of Death."

>"Does this make you my pet? I've always wanted one."

The plan was to infiltrate the Subjugator, pop the hydrostatic bubbles covering up the hangars, then shut down the hangar shields and their emergency bulkheads so that the water will come flooding inside. While General Nautilus had a good idea in hiding the ship underwater and amongst the wreckage of old ships to mask its signature, there was one thing he hadn’t accounted for. Water is very –very- heavy. And these starships are not designed to keep out water very well.
So once the plan was discussed on the Lion’s Share, you started packing up. Menace Squadron’s subs were hanging in the cargo bay, ready to deploy once you neared the ship’s location. Besides Eudora and Jacko, the only members of Menace Squadron left were that Polis Massan, the young girl, and that Ithorian. Seems attrition is catching up with them.
But that’s not important now, what is important is getting aboard that ship. And to do that, Eudora already had a plan. You already had a pair of B1 Battle Droids manning the cockpit, and unfortunately you had to agree to use them to help you get close. “They already know the old Separatist codes, and even then, Whisper has already given us some of her clearance codes as well.”
“Hopefully,” says Whisper. “They are still valid. I would hate to be leading the Captain of this ship into a deathtrap.”
You sigh. Why did you agree to this.
Once that was settled, all that was left was to pack the explosives into the submarine. Helping you out was Jacko. Eudora and the rest of the crew were busy checking over the weapons, and what droid poppers they had left as well. “So.” You stand up straight after dumping another pack of explosives into the submarine, then look back at a very curious Jacko. “You and the Commander know each other?”

“We were classmates in Flight School,” you explain.
“Yeah, she told me about that,” he says. “Told me you were a pretty good pilot too.”
You shrug. “I don’t like to brag.” Well, actually you do. “I had double digit notches back in Flight School but otherwise, you know, it’s just stuff you’re expected to learn.”
“Yeah, I know that,” he says with a smirk on his face. What’s he smiling about.
“And what about you?” you ask. “What farm did Eudora pull you out of?”
“ISD Vensenor.” You fold your arms, suddenly curious now. He’s a defector like Eudora too? “Eudora didn’t pull me out of there though, we were in the middle of an exercise over Saleucami, I conveniently crashed my TIE Fighter planetside, traders picked me up. Joined up with the first Squadron that would have me.”
Now that was a surprise. A fellow TIE Pilot too? You suppose if they aren’t dead, they’re either dumb or defecting. “So. How good were you?”
“First in my class,” he declares. “Same as you.”
“What’s your opinion on the TIE Fighter?” you ask. Make or break.
“Lovely craft, very easy to handle,” he says. Oh. Well. “Complete deathtrap though. Broke two of my ribs and my arm on a deliberate crash.” Well then.
You nod slowly. “… I see. So what’s your actual name?”
“Ajax Tarasko, Eudora just calls me Jacko for short.” He places his gloved hands on his belt, giving you a stern look. “Look, I’m aware you might not like us. Bluntly, I don’t like you much either. Doesn’t mean we can’t try and be amicable.” Well, at least he’s reasonable.

Rest well and move quickly when morning comes. That was the plan. In reality, getting a restful night's sleep was not proving as easy as you'd hoped.
Perhaps it's to be expected, the thrill of the hunt offering you an untapped reservoir of energy to call upon. After all, Miura's trail has led you this far already, taking you from the Dragon's Head to the temple city of Garuna. It's only prudence and caution that have prevented you from following it further still, all the way to Tenngaru's southern edge. If the Mentor was here, you think wryly, you know exactly what he would tell you. Become as a tree or a rock, he would say, waiting with infinite patience.
Focus. Calm your mind. Meditate upon what you have learned.
You've put the pieces together easily enough – a chemical extract found only in the southern mountains, and a single reflecting pool in the same region. Clues, all leading you to the location of Miura's captors – and possibly the young priestess herself. Come first light, you'll be on the road and making progress, following the trail as far as you need to go.
>>45838148
Yet, still doubts and suspicions lurk at the back of your mind, whispering poison into your ear. What if you're wrong, those treasonous voices suggest, what if your instincts have failed you? A single false clue, misleading assumption or hasty guess would be enough to send you chasing shadows, while Miura's captors burrow deeper underground. Lose her now, and you might never get the chance to find her again.
Doubts, haunting your every step even as you rise and pace the length of your humble tavern bedroom. Forcing yourself to stop dead in your tracks, you listen to the muffled sounds of the night. The walls here are thin, considered a barrier by technicality alone, and you can easily hear your neighbours. In the room to your left, Koa's room, you can hear the soft padding of footsteps repeating the same pattern over and over again. Practising his swordplay, you imagine, or just seeking solace in the mindless exercise.
By contrast, Tawn – your opposite neighbour – is far more sedate. Silent, in fact, save for the occasional sigh of frustration. Through cracks in the warped wood, the flicker of a burning candle can be seen. Although Tawn has given you good reason to see him as a reliable ally, you've got to wonder where his true priorities lie – with Miura's safety, or with his mission?
Either way, you decide, your goals are the same. As long as you're pursuing the same end results, you don't care too much about his motivations. With that thought in mind, you sit back on your lumpy bed and glare up at the ceiling. Maybe, eventually, you could get to sleep if you tried, but you're tempted to consult with one of your companions. A moment of conversation might put your mind at ease.

What even is a ranger, at its core?
Classes are supposed to be based on historic and fictional archetypes, but can Ranger be an archetype if we can't even agree on what it encompasses? It seems everyone has a different concept of the ranger.
The word 'range' in the ranger's name refers to an area of wilderness that the individual guards, ranges or hunts in, like forest rangers in real life, or Aragorn in LotR. The verb to range means '(to pass over or through an area or region in all directions, as in exploring or searching)'.
But many people, perhaps having been introduced to RPG terminology from computer games, consider a core aspect of rangers expertise in RANGED combat, i.e. archery. Even though Aragorn was more known for using a sword than a bow, if a player tells you they want to play an archer, they will want to make a ranger, even after you tell them that Fighters can use bows too, and actually make better archers than Rangers do.
Is spellcasting a vital part of a ranger? They've often been the semi-caster for nature magic, to druids as what paladins are to clerics.
And what about animal companions? In most games you could probably potentially buy or train an animal, no matter what your class is. How can "has a pet" be a core part of a class's identity?
That everyone has a different idea is further proven by the fact that the semi-official supplements to D&D 5th edition include multiple and wildly varying remakes of the ranger: one that's a mundane outdoors class with spellcasting replaced by herbal medicine, one that doubles down on the 'animal companion' part with restricted summoning of a powerful spirit animal.

Aragorn.
Anybody who thinks Rangers have to do with ranged combat is a fucking idiot. Rangers are commandos who can divorce themselves of logistical support for extended period of times. IE they bleed into the forest or highlands and live off the land while executing their missions. They're guys you can send in teams to raid an enemy village with no food and know they'll make it their alive, do the job, come back, all without being followed. A ranger is a survivalist and professional soldier rolled into one lethal package.
>>45836100
Could the character in the image be a ranger?
Well yes, but most people would guess fighter or something first.
The fighter's archetypal silhouette includes weapons and armor, in a more pragmatic configuration than the paladin, who probably has shining armor, symbols and some magical holy glow to indicate divinity. A rogue has leather armor and daggers, maybe a hood.
But what's a ranger's silhouette? Cape to camouflage in the environment... and what?
So, how did mankind conquer the galaxy back in the day when astronomican wasn't a thing?

Being cast out of your homeland by your kin for crimes is a terrible thing, more so for a Dwarf than any other race. Their inner strength and grand works are about how well a clan of Dwarves works together to craft works of great strength and artistic vision. But now, for their horrid crimes against their people an entire dwarven house, a once noble family stripped of it’s title and most of it’s wealth are now cast out into the world where dangers and monsters forever threaten them.

Are so many people on /tg/ against reskinning, or is it just a vocal minority?
Of course, it's not suitable for every game, especially those that are 'fiction first'. Doesn't make sense in Apocalypse World, for example.
But it's the very foundation of most effects-based superhero games like Mutants & Masterminds and Champions, and most games beyond that. Do so many people care whether I'm a magician throwing fireballs or a mad scientist throwing unstable concoctions, as long as I'm still doing 10d6 damage in an AoE?
I even saw some craziness in a thread saying someone would insist on writing up full stats for a 'throwing chakram' instead of just reskinning a throwing axe.
>>45834016
It varies. If you want to see a good reskin, look at Hunter: The Vigil, or actually any of the WoD games considering it takes a core system of being a regular shmuck and lets you be a mage, a monster hunter, a werewolf, or a vampire.
If you want to see a bad reskin, go look at the Starships Trooper books make for the D&D 3.5 open license. Those are ungodly.
>>45834016
I wonder how much she was paid to wear the carrot nose and what she was thinking during the shoot when wearing it.
>>45834016
It depends on the person and the game: in some circumstances fluff is sacrosanct as How Things Should Be. In others, the fluff is mutable because there's very little to begin with. The major thing is wanting characters to feel different, and doing so differs on system and player understanding.

Mistakes happen, it wasn't the first time the caretaker saw this scene; this place, the purgatory, was supposed to temporary house a lady before the watcher would lock her in a realm of her own. The purgatory is left to rot after being decommissioned by the watcher for the lack of new arrivals. Still, drifting souls always find its way into this crumbling ruin. Of all the watcher's agents, The informant and The Caretaker were bound to this place to the end of times.

The caretaker found no need to describe himself but it wasn't his decision; Unnaturally tall and pale, he hid most of his features under a ragged yellow robe, he was obviously dead long ago courtesy to the glaring hole inside his cold helm but his body was to serve the watcher. A cursed bronze sword empowered the caretaker with unnatural strength.
The Caretaker silently stared at the drifting soul waiting for it to stand up, he saw....

How much of the Age of Sigmar success is fabricated?
Essentially, how much of these battle reports are sponsored by Games-Workshop and would you put it above GW to fabricate a community to attract players or make it so that we perceive it being a success?
Everything coming from the 9th Age or continuing WHFB communities we know are legit because it's all player created. What do we actually know about Age of Sigmar?

I genuinely don't know what you are talking about. I've heard literally nothing positive about it since the month it came out, or for that manner heard of a game of it played within 100 miles of my house since that time.
The only game I've seen to flop like that was Dropzone simply because no models were available for 6+ months because he carved them by hand with a spoon or something.
>>45831812
I also want to stress that is simply a local perspective. I don't follow the large scale movements of games.
>>45831667
I would assume a significant portion.
I'm friends with a lot of Fantasy players, and most of them just gave up the ghost when AoS came out.
There are like 2 people I know of who play it, the rest of them moved from Games Workshop to Good Games, who let them play whatever they want on the tables (aka 8th edition), plus there's generally more room than the 4 ft x 4 ft tables.
