Are you using a wireless router? maybe someone's been intercepting your traffic. Have you checked the logs? changed the passwd for root? It might be a default passwd. The router at my rental house had the default root pass and I logged in and checked the logs: IPs from Bulgaria and the balcans logged in as root.
