It's all really poorly written tripe with shit dialogue because Japanese doesn't translate to English all too gracefully. Couple that with a load of cultural elements that are totally foreign to most westerners and you have something that no sane person really takes a serious liking to.
I think its only appeals are its ability to construct dreamlike situations and universes that provide a route of escapism and also a pretty consistent high-quality art style, at least in comparison to western animations.

No, not that kind of story. This is something that really happened to me, a story about the time I tried to get with my oneitis. Naturally, it involves computer hacking, stalking, and my attempted seduction of a lesbian with political philosophy. Though, if I'm being fair, I should say this is something that really happened to her. I found the experience at turns embarassing and disheartening. She found it terrifying.
Trigger Warning: This gets a bit dark.
Let me take you back to where we met. High school. A small high school, on a small island, nearby a large liberal city in the US. Island communities, and I've found this to be true across the country, have a potpurri of people. The rich, who've moved in to mansions to enjoy the luxurious climate, and the descendants of their counterparts from past generations who have degenerated, seduced, perhaps, by overexposure to that luxiorious climate, into borderline poverty. She was the former and I the latter, and where else could the daughter of a wealthy Jewish doctor be exposed to the son of a single mother who worked, at times, as a waitress, or a store clerk, but at high school?

Both her parents were doctors, but only her father was Jewish. Her mother was Japanese and if you aren't familiar with that combination - let me tell you, it can be deadly. Hapas are hit or miss, you either know that, or you don't know enough of them. She was a hit. Slender, pale smooth skin, perky breasts, flowing silky black hair, and a face that was unique as it was flawless. That's crass, and I almost cringe describing her to you like this, because my feelings for her are so much deeper than these superficial details. My hope is, when you close your eyes, you can glimpse her - though I know my words are too feeble an instrument to convey her image to you, if I can't give you a glimpse, I hope I can at least convey what I see when I close my eyes and think of her.
She was on the debate team, and she was good. A state champion. She had grades and academic success like you'd expect of a Japanese Jew raised by two doctors. I'd like to tell you about how we met in high school, about how it was teenaged love, how I didn't deserve her but she got with me any way, and blah, blah. blah. I think you'd see through that though. You're like me, and you know that kind of shit doesn't happen in real life. Instead, like I wrote at the start, I'm just going to tell you the truth. We never spoke in high school. I watched her. I followed her. I knew her friends and talked to them about her. You'd think it'd get back to her that someone was asking about her, right? If it did, then that never got back to me.

The closest I ever came, and, the high point of my high school career, was when I managed to trade seats with someone who sat in her pod during the one class we shared. I sat right behind for nearly three weeks, three weeks while I gathered courage and thought of things to say, while sitting, silently. They grew stronger, and stronger. I lived a stupid life. Ride the bus to work, work, ride back. Walk to the grocery store. Shit post online. Repeat ad nauseum. My one "friend" - a character I met online, and talked to only on Skype, gave me advice. He said I never really knew her, and I wasn't in love with her, that instead, I was in love with a fantasy that I invented out of her memory. I blocked him and never spoke with him again.
