Nah I've never heard of people requesting particular drugs from the GP. Normally people just take whatever shit they are prescribed. You could give it a try but just don't be too obvious about it. Just say you've done some research and heard that xyz is a helpful medicine.

This is true, but only because the average person is completely illiterate when it comes to drugs and will gulp down cyanide capsules if doctor tells them to do it. Try discussing it and giving reasons (i.e personal preference because of the effects), however because of the depression OP mentioned the doctor might decline.
