The closest you can get to "finding" it is to devote yourself to a cause of some kind. Religious, political, and sovial causes are commonly used for this.
But really, meaning in life isn't something that you can find; you have to make it. Even when you devote yourself to a cause you will still end up doing this, because you'll have to choose how you will fight for that cause. But it will seem a little less like making it up as you go along.

Maybe you haven't known them for long enough? Imo being friends with someone for a year doesn't make them a close friend, especially if you only talk to them about fickle things, or only talk to them at work.

A friend of mine threatens to kill herself every so often for attention. Her favorite move is to empty pill bottles, feigning that she swallowed them all; I sometimes find the dissolved pills in the toilet or in the trash.
