This is probably better explained through an example. Let's say you choose to not to break up with someone because you think "what if I make a mistake in breaking up with them?". If you stay, there's always a chance that you'll end up thinking "what would my life have been like if I had broken up with this person?". Your life is a series of decisions, and there's no way you can find out what your life would be like if you had chosen every single option, so there's no point...

Yesterday I went to a gay club, I usually go there to pick up girls, but this time I got super drunk and kissed a guy.

My parents would notice when I was sad and mopey but never thought that it was more than just an isolated event.
And when they asked and I would respond with "I'm okay", it never really went further than that. I don't blame them but I do feel as though it was fairly obvious.

She works morning to afternoon, and I afternoon to night shift, and there is no reason for either one of us to go into the other person's department of the company.
