The rooster crows, the sun rises, the day begins.
You awake in your bed.
"Get on outta bed ash, the cows can't milk themselves!"
You slide out of bed and stand up stretching.
You change your underwear and quickly retrieve your jeans and stompy workboots. You pull your red flannel off the chair you left it on and slip it on.
Dashing downstairs, you eat breakfast quick and hurry out to the cowshed.
Pa is here.
You give him a cursory good morning, and move towards the back of the barn.
Bossie is here.
Bossie seems off.
Her eyes are glassy and her moo seems hollow.

"Hey girl, what's the trouble? You FEELIN I'll?"
You scratch bossie behind the ears and look around her. She seems just fine physically. You were probably just imagining things.
"Moooouuuhouhooohho"
Or not.
Is Bossie a cow-eared anime girl with H Cups?
A heavy, tense silence wrapped itself around the room. Guzio stood before you, smiling like a kid who found his long-lost favourite toy. He patiently awaited your reaction. Carefully, you tried pulling some more information out of him:
“Who am I, sir?”, you asked.
“It all just made sense to me yesterday, as I was spying on you. Why the stars pointed me towards you. Your studious spirit, and your liking to spend your nights in the wild, and fraternise with little forest critters, like that gnoll. Even that thing about your teacher you tried telling me yesterday. You know, for a moment I actually thought you might a blood mage! But now I finally know the truth. It all fell neatly into place. Who you are, and why the gods made our paths cross. You are a druid’s apprentice.”
“Huh... “, you let out, scratching your head. It wasn’t quite what you expected.
“Don’t worry, for your secret is safe with me. I wouldn’t want any harm to come to you, after all. At first I thought you are just the next piece of the puzzle I have solve, but you just might be the key to it all.”
“What am I a key to, exactly?”, you were getting more and more confused with each word coming from this man’s mouth.
“My quest, the one I told you about. Or maybe I didn’t, I frankly can’t remember. I guess we both could use a bit of a reminder. Come, let me tell you a little story.”
He ushered you towards his table, covered in all sorts of maps and documents. You couldn’t understand half the letters on any of those, and whatever was left didn’t make much sense either.
>>46245102
“It all began one fateful night, three years ago. I was young back then. Younger than I’m now anyway. And so I spent my nights as any youth would. Gazing at the stars alone, in my private observatory in the mountains. It was then when the gods have bestowed their will upon me. They beseeched me to travel westward, and who was I to oppose them?
It was a long and arduous pilgrimage, but the skies have guided me all the way long. I took no money with, nor any company, and so I survived only from what the land gave me, and from the charity of the faithful that have helped me on my quest. After following the stars for three months, I found myself in the forests near the great city of Lar-Benog, a weeks of travel from here.
The great lights have led me towards an ancient city, abandoned long ago, and overtaken by the overgrowth. And so I began to search the ruins, not quite sure what I was expected to find. Through my research I discovered that city was founded almost six hundred years ago, during the Great Drought.
You see, during the reign of the Emperor Nichus III the Wise, the empire went through years of drought, when almost no rains fell across the lands. The food output dwindled, and the great cities, which couldn’t feed themselves, have become ravaged by famine. The people were unhappy, and so revolts sprung across the empire. Those were chaotic and unstable times.
The Emperor however, wouldn’t have it. He came up with a plan, to relocate a part of the population from the overcrowded cities, towards the eastern reaches of the empire, that were mostly untamed wilds. Incidentally, they suffered less from the droughts than any other region.
>>46245146
This was before the druidism was declared one of the forbidden arts. And so druids lived among the people, like any other, and were allowed to practice their magic, so long as they respected the laws of the land. To them, however, the eastern forests were sacred. And so, when they started being cut down, to make room for fields, and towns, and to make lumber, they didn’t take it too well.
First, they begged the Emperor to reconsider. Then, when he ignored them, they demanded it. And then they began to fight. Their magical control over nature was the only thing keeping the famine from turning into a catastrophe. They managed to produce enough food to keep all the empire from starving. But then, when the Emperor kept ignoring them, they stopped helping. Not only that, they also used their magic to halt the empire’s progress on colonizing the east.
That didn’t go well neither with the people, nor the Emperor. Now this is where it gets interesting. Supposedly, it was then when one of the High Seers had a celestial vision, and pushed to ban druidism. But, according to the documents I found in the ruins, it weren’t the Astrologists that forebode it first. It was an imperial decree that made it punishable by death to practice druidism.
A year after that, the High Seers of that time held council, and branded druidism as one of the forbidden arts. But, I believe it wasn’t the will of the gods that moved them. No, I think they were acting upon the Emperor's orders. That is why the gods have shown me those ruins. They are outraged that a man’s will was taken as their own. And that is my quest, to fix this grave mistake.
>>46245178
I have been gathering proof to make my case before my peers, but I don’t have nearly enough. What I need is a living, breathing druid to show that your art is not unholy. And this is where you come in. I just need you to show your magic to the council, and then to tell them about your culture and your practices. Simple enough, and then you won’t have to hide who you are ever again. What say you?”
>Sure, I don’t see why not.
>That’s all very neat, but you’re mistaken. I’m no druid.
>I'm just an apprentice, so I don’t know any of that stuff.
>Sorry, what? I sorta dozed off while you were blabbering on and on.

You are Tsukuda Ryouta, a Shinigami of the 12th Division with the unique role of an investigator of abnormal occurrences.
Your life back home, back in Soul Society, has taken some interesting turns. Until recently, your family consisted of only you and your adoptive mother, Tsukuda Shiori. The situation has changed quite abruptly when the Captain of your Division, Urahara Kisuke, has entrusted you with a strange child you've never seen before.
A white haired, golden eyed girl around the age of ten. Appearances are a poor measure of age within Soul Society, but even so, she really was a child. Even though her face bore no trace of apparent emotion - in similarity to you - her character displayed those traits quite clearly - Tsukuda Miyu is naive, impressionable, and helplessly innocent. Just like you, exactly like you, she can't feel any emotions. The question of whether humans are naturally good or naturally evil is irrelevant here - Tsukuda Miyu is neither. Her mind is that of pure logic and rationality, and as of yet, she doesn't have a firm grasp on things like morality and human feelings.
So then, does that make her evil? Is compassion necessary in order to be a good person? Does the emotion itself matter more than actions?
Even though she can't understand, she'll still follow the rules that are laid out for her. Stealing isn't acceptable, so she won't do it. Hurting other people isn't acceptable, so she won't do it. Being mean to others is rude, so she won't do it. Helping people in need is good, so Miyu will do it just because it's the right thing to do. She'll learn everything you've learned. In a way, Tsukuda Miyu will learn to 'do as the romans do', and she'll obediently follow the rules of society - if only because she has no reason not to, and no preference of her own.
Such debates seem rather pointless for the unfeeling Tsukuda Ryouta to take part in, but even so, aren't those curious questions?
(1/2)
>>46244667
Perhaps Tsukuda Miyu will take to her lessons better than you have. Indeed, it seemed to you like your little sister was progressing at an incredible pace. Does it only seem that way because you have nothing to compare her progress to? Your memories of your early days as part of the Tsukuda family are rather vague. Or does it only seem to you that way because you feel proud of her as a sibling, or are hopeful about having her grow into what you could not, despite your mother's wishes?
...It can't be the latter, can it? After all, just like Miyu, you don't feel anything, so emotions like those can't be obfuscating your observations.
All answers - about Miyu, about you, about your shared issues - most likely lie with Urahara Kisuke. He's promised to discuss the matter after your current mission. Perhaps it's no wonder that the occurrences back home seem more interesting than the mission you are about to partake in.
The human city feels rather uninteresting as well. Hong Kong's view matches what was described in the books you've read and the things you've heard, down to the thick smog looming over the city like a low-hanging cloud. A polluted, foul cloud. It is exactly what you've imagined all of the major human cities to appear like, the consequences of humanity's careless progress. Well, no - you don't feel scorn towards them because of it. Even if you could, it wouldn't be your place to do so. The Shinigami aren't allowed to interfere with humans; that's how the balance is maintained. One's beliefs, one's opinions, one's thoughts, and especially one's actions - if such things were to become a factor in the balance, it would quickly turn into chaos.
Well, you're not here to debate things like that. It's about time you've started the mission.

The dirty air feels unpleasant. While the discomfort is a minor hindrance at most, the limited visibility is the real issue here. Most Hollows give themselves away by not hiding their spiritual pressure at all, but those clever enough to do that, while a rarity, can only be reliably spotted through sight.
Your Denreishinki keeps letting off beeps, numerous dots blinking on the cellphone's small display. Gradually, the hostile signatures disappear, one by one. The team of Shinigami must be taking care of the Hollows drawn in by spikes of spiritual pressure. You'll approach them, but if combat hasn't concluded by the time you catch up to them, it may be best to simply observe until it's over.
Under normal circumstances, that would seem like the most reasonable course of action.
The mutilated bodies of your fellow agents are the first thing you find upon arriving on the scene. You quickly realize that the amount of blood spilled out onto the cold asphalt seems too large for the amount of corpses present in the area; the presence of many torn-off pieces of black cloth seems to indicate to the grim fact that some of the Shinigami have been devoured by the Hollows they've attempted to fight off.
Your Denreishinki marks the presence of just one more Hollow in the vicinity. You can feel its spiritual pressure. There's also one other Reiatsu, unmistakably a Shinigami's. That's the only agent that you can sense; everyone else appears to be dead. Maintaining a stealthy approach, you move closer towards them.

A blonde girl is fighting a Hollow on equal footing. The fierceness in her pale blue eyes is almost nostalgic. But this isn't a duel between two rivals like back then, even though the word 'rivals' may be an overstatement to your relationship; even the ferocity is diluted by fatigue. Takenaka Hanae is not fighting another swordsman, but a green-skinned scorpion-esque monstrosity. The creature is missing two of its legs, a portion of its tail, and has several deep sword wounds across its torso.
Even so, it's still winning. The blond haired prodigy is fighting a losing battle. Rivulets of sweat drip down her face. The pale blue eyes can barely maintain focus on the monster before them. Her head keeps dipping downwards, so she has to force herself back into a proper posture. It's as if her body has grown too weak to properly support even its own meager weight.
The Hollow will regain its health in a matter of minutes. Hanae has only a single wound in her side, most likely caused by the currently dismembered tail. That wound won't heal on its own. They are fighting on even footing in regards to spiritual prowess, but a Hollow is still a Hollow - a monster of wild strength and unpredictable abilities. Trying to fight one head-on is a bold, desperate effort.
Unless she can end this battle quickly, she will most certainly lose.

Our main settlement has around 300 people in it
Buildings

Iron minex1
Smithyx1
Lumber campx1

Arcane Lab
Dark altar(in lair)

Homes(we have extra for future population)
Northern town/fort
fortified with high walls, set near the old Dwarven imperial highway. They operate a few farms and have a population of around 50, not including the garrison of the fort(between 30 and 100 men, 30 during peacetime)
Our total population runs around 550 people with 55 vampires, the rest are our human thralls, free minded humans and various other servants.
We also control a vampiric Orc who has infiltrated the orcs of the far north and currently leads a warband 50 warriors strong.
We are currently closely allied to the elves, who are ruled by a militaristic leader, their current Archon is Narkos, a renowned mage and warrior
They rule a small town and have a small defense force consisting of rangers
We also have friendly relations with the Dwarves, but have had recent trade disputes due to their undercutting our metalcrafters in local markets.
The Dwarves control a massive Empire and command thousands of troops, their coffers also run deep, allowing them to field large numbers of mercenaries to exist their standing armies.
We have recently established relations with the City-states establishing a trade route by sea
Their relative strength is unknown, but we know they were badly beaten by the Dwarves in a recent war
Question /tg/, how often do your players and DMs do voices to indicate when they're speaking in character?
How hard do they try? Does each player have a clear personality behind their voice, or is it just the standard "slight British accent" thing I hear so often?
I'm very curious. Also feel free to post stories about people doing a very good/crappy job at their voices.
Character voice thread I suppose
>>46244045
I'll start with an example from my group. We have one player who does amazing voices, and many of them sound completely different. We often joke that he should pursue voice acting.
>Surly Knight character= A gruff yet slightly posh accent as well as intense amounts of eye contact
>Weird Arab themed thief/rogue= sleazy sounding middle eastern accent with lots of chuckling to himself and wordplay
>Hyper-cliche, Gandalf esque wizard = really good old man voice, as well as trailing off mid conversation to talk about shit he remembers from when he was young
>As a DM
I try to always voice the characters. I'm not terribly good at accents but it gets the job done. Major problem is finding different accents for different people in a region.
One of my last sessions was based in Oklahoma. The group met maybe 4 or 5 male adult NPC's and I struggled to find variation in them.
>As a character
My current character in one my games is an Australian, and I don't even bother with him. If I don't do an accent as a player I'll try to at least have the tone down according to the characters personality.
Some say "my character says x, y, z." Some speak normally. Some make a token effort at a broken accent. Some break into full voice acting, complete with fantasy-racial mannerisms and such.
I try to give all of my characters a unique feel to them, voice and sayings is the best way to do that. Right now I'm playing an Imperial Nazi Arch Militant with Hatred of Mutants who is my best attempt to imitate Hans Landa. I played a Minotaur with a deep southern accent in Shadowrun, who called everyone 'Beef Jerky', but was immediately offended when white humans said it, in addition to being offended by steak houses, leather, cow print, etc.
It's hard to come up with those accents and characterizations on the fly while DMing, though. A lot of unplanned NPCs end up extremely generic or over-the-top racist.

Give it a reason to exist, design it around that.

Why is there this place underground? Was it a castle's old dungeons? An ancient city's sewers? An old, abandoned mine? Dwarves? Lava-tube? Is it an old, haunted manor instead? Did some rich, crazy asshole decide he wanted a secret underground ruin? An ancient underground city?
Frankly, why are people just going off and building dungeons, populating them with monsters and traps, and then fucking off for a thousand years?

It's a cold morning, with dew forming a sparking carpet across the charred grass, and the chill of it makes your body ache. Then again, even the hottest day of the year wouldn't have been enough to ease the pain from your abused body.
Bruises and light burns, however, are infinitely preferable to the canvas of nightmarish injuries that Tawn had been left with. Near enough to the entire right side of his body lost to the flames, and that was far from the worst that could have happened. He was lucky to survive – many others lost their lives last night, the traitor responsible for the trap among them. Musari, his treason nurtured by bitterness and spurned ambition, had sought to lead the Emperor's representative into a deadly trap, while his cultist allies stole him away to safety.
When their plans had been drawn, the cult did not guess that you would have been here. An oversight, a fatal weakness that might just lead to their downfall. You know how to find them, now, and you've got little to hold you back.
Like a careful, capable hunting hound, you'll chase them to the furthest corner of the land if you have to.

The outpost town is smouldering, the burned remains of buildings still casting faint pillars of smoke into the cool air, but there are signs of life at least. Soldiers, many of them bearing wounds or the haunted eyes of disbelieving survivors, pace around in loose patrol. Seizing the first one you see by the arm, you ask to be pointed to whoever is in charge. There are matters that need to be discussed.
From the moment you meet him, you know that Takino is not one of Ra's carefully picked agents. A military man, through and through, he claims to be the overall commander for the entire south-east. Things are heating up, it seems, if he is here personally. A humourless man, his eyes and hair the exact same flinty colour, Takino rarely looks up from his papers.
“Moriya has been sent to Garuna for medical treatment,” he begins when you arrive, cutting off your first question, “From there, he'll be taken back to the capital. I don't know what will happen after that – I assume he'll find some comfortable job behind a desk. There was a man here, a prisoner,” Takino changes track seamlessly, finally glancing up at you, “Your doing?”
You're the one that took him prisoner, you confirm, has he said anything else?
“He has spoken,” Takino gives you a slight nod, “Most of the men that attacked us came from a nearby village, called...” a rustle of paper as he checks his notes, “Sparna, I believe. In either case, the matter has been taken care of. I sent troops to deal with it as they saw fit.”
You don't like the sound of that.
“So,” Takino offers you a cold smile, “What can I do for you, Wanderer?”

Why does /tg/ love dreadlocks so much?
It seems like there's just some people who can never stop talking about dreadlocks, and they want all of their characters and all of the villains to have dreadlocks.
Is it because they looks so distinct and fun? Or is it because dreadlocks are always near the top of the list of "Most Attractive Hairstyles"?
Is it some sort of anti-establishment political statement? Does this rampant dreadlocks worship actually stem from a desire for less bureaucracy?
>>46241927

The important questions:
>Have you ever hosted or played in a nonstandard setting? What are it's challenges?
The personal comments:
I've been toying with an underwater setting. I might claim writers block but I can't decide on some things. For humans I can imagine humans becoming what they are when they discover fire, and therein the ability to efficiently break down food outside their bodies. Do merfolk have a legendary moment like that? What allows them to become intelligent in the same or similar way? Am I asking the wrong questions, maybe I should have asked another board. I don't want to handwave this, but its at least interesting to think about.
On a more important note my potential Burning Wheel players are pushing for a mega-city setting. Ravnica springs to mind. I've not GM'd before, and I'm inexperienced (for lack of a better word) in that I've never really played with a good group. As far as I know everyone in my group is inexperienced in the same way. I guess I'm not sure what to ask in regards to this. I think I just want more stimuli roughly around these subjects so I have more to think about.

>Paladin really wants to smite the slave master
>He's got a mighty tingling in his smitin' arm
>I know this guy, he'll smite from sun-up to sun-down and his work will never be done
>but he has a particular ritual, when it comes to smitin'
>You see, he'll smite an evildoer because his god requires it
>He'll smite an evildoer because he needed smitin'
>He'll smite an evildoer just for getting in his way
>He'll even smite evildoers who were just buggin' him with their evildoin'
>but before he smites anyone, he always wants to be sure
>Surely that won't be necessary in this case, the guy's running a slave auction
>Surely he won't need to make sure, he's surrounded by slave owners and slave buyers and slave sellers in the midst of literal actual hell
>Surely he can just skip to the smiting, this time if no other
>* [PALADIN] gets ready to summon [SPECIAL MOUNT] if he has to run.
>* [PALADIN] uses detect evil, just to be ready
Now, I had to really quickly look up the detection spells to find out how much evil would be overwhelming, and what the effects should be. Obviously, he was facing down about 30-50HD of evil creatures, creatures with evil descriptors, and literal demons. Not to mention he was in literal actual Hell. And, though I wouldn't hold it against him for not knowing, he was currently within the personal space of a potent god of evil. I was well within my right to simply declare his head exploded, but wisely decided to just have him stunned.
>[PALADIN] (I KNOW THIS WAS STUPID)
>[ROGUE] (BUT YOU DID IT ANYWAY.)

To be fair, level 10 or so, that would probably work.
