Is talking about building 3.5/PF characters on /tg/ so popular because building and optimizing 3.5/PF characters is a "fun" minigame, but actually PLAYING the game is a nightmare?
13 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>46196478
They're both fun, in their own way. The thing is, though, that actually playing a game (any tabletop game, really) requires a good GM and good players, while theorizing and building only requires access to the material. A lot of people have bad experiences with GM's who can't handle the system or who don't know how to run a game, or with players who suck in various ways, so creating builds is the easiest way for them to have fun with the system.

That doesn't mean that playing the game is a nightmare, just that playing the game with the wrong people can be a nightmare.
>>
>>46196729
>just that playing the game with the wrong people can be a nightmare.

A fair point, but isn't that basically true with any game, any system, and any edition? We've probably all seen plenty of That Guy/That GM/That Group/That LARP threads dealing with everything from 1st-ed to DRYH.

>...but isn't that basically true with any game, any system, and any edition?
It is, yes. It's just that this question was about Pathfinder specifically, so that's what I was addressing.

Barbarians existed at some point in real life history, are a trope in several media besides traditional games, and did not originate from traditional games.
This thread is off topic.
If the topic of the board were "everything" then it would be impossible to be banned for posting off topic, which obviously is not the case.

Better or worse? More money in the scene or less? Debating which to play competitively.

The game is more complex, which is neither here nor there. I like both for different reasons.

Scene-wise, Magic is more expensive but you can at least purchase the cards you want directly. You have to craft them in Hearthstone, which is a pain in the ass and is the equivalent of having to open boosters to find the cards you want for Magic.
>>
>>46193652
Getting into either is inadvisable.

Getting into for either for money is idiotic.

>the apocalypse happened
>but nobody is entirely sure how
>probably because whoever is left is too busy surviving
>the planet almost went into an ice age but was at least partially reversed by nuclear weaponry
>terminators prowl irradiated cities but are hardly intelligent individually and often are separated into small colonies because of zombie hordes
>eldritch occultists are trying to summon the horrorterrors they represent but are locked into war with righteous holy dogmatists

Does this sound like a good setting? I'm still hoping to work out some kinks with it. I enjoy the idea of an apocalypse half-happening, and elements of itself keeping eachother in check in a weird way.

So wait, all the possible apocalypses happened at once more or less?
>>
>>46193207
More or less. And they kind of hold eachother back so no one is the dominant apocalypse. It's still a rough world, but not as rough as it could be, all things considered.

So, I'm strongly considering starting work on a setting in my free time based on American Mythology and Folklore. Who and what absolutely has to be included? Anachronisms perfectly welcome, Paul Bunyan squaring off against Al Capone, Billy the Kid teaming up with Nixon, John Henry fighting against a corrupt Henry Ford, anything at all. What historical and semi-historical characters have to be brought up when addressing the cultural melting pot that is America's oral tradition?

Wouldn't what would be considered short hair in medieval times be considered fairly long hair now? I don't think anyone was running around with buzz cuts then.

Cultural familiarity creates a context in which people are comfortable roleplaying.

Familiarity leads to ease of immersion.

Black Tides Quest
****
So far in life, you've had good days.
Yesterday was not one of them. After six days of lounging your ass off on a cruise ship, the zombie apocalypse that had been breaking out in major cities (and a large part of why you decided a cruise was a good idea) decided that your ship was a wonderful place to break out. Four hours of Half Life 2: Shitty Beach Chair Edition, and you had managed to batter, brain, and butcher the zombie cruise goers into a pulp that had tried to get between you and the lifebot deck. After stealing one and turning one of the many, many bars on the ship into a Helsinki Breadbasket, you launched off the side of the ship with a smile and a wave.

Now you were loose on the open sea, the old cruise ship had been burning, and you were fairly certain that rescue was a forgone conclusion. That left only one recourse. Piracy on the open seas, in the midst of a zombie apocalypse that was driving civilization to it's knees.

Somewhere deep inside your soul, you plan on having fun with this.

Biscotti's bar is not an unassuming place.

It's one of the largest drinking establishments in the entire region. It's rivaled only by Gallete's bar one nation over.
The bar prides itself on its fine selection of liquors, both local and established. Boasting at least sixty more brands than its counterparts in neighboring Gallete and Bruschetta.

Rum from the farmlands, scotch from Caranacha, and patrons from all walks of life gather in this temple of debauchery. It stands as a proud symbol of Biscotti night life and tourism.

So, why are you about to destroy it? It's a funny story.

You are Jack Albator, champion drinker, taster of fine ale, connoisseur of fluffy tails. You're here for one very specific reason: to foil another attempt on the place you call home.
The whole day has been nothing but foiling attempts on your home. It seems a very sinister nation has infiltrated the neighboring nation of Gallete and has been using its tools against you. One of which is a brand of special forces which Gallete employs for special political missions. Unfortunately, it's very lenient on who it answers to and what it considers a 'political mission'.

After getting to the bottom of that; you were faced with the possibility that the threat was not over. Yet another group, one that was actually smart enough to not make an attempt on your life in broad daylight, is still out there and waiting for the signal to strike.

Hopefully, after tonight, those people will be out of your way as well.
Until then, there's only one thing to do.

There's a loud pop inside the bar with a blinding flash of light. One of the waitresses quickly douses a spilled lantern with nonflammable oil to subside the sudden eruption of flames from the glowing pedestal.

The staff profusely apologizes as they clean up the unexpected mess. All the while; a table of many suspicious characters seems to materialize in the far end of the room.

You have to give Aligot credit; he is very precise and calculated with his magic.

Around you sit two women in cloaks, a white-haired boy, two small girls, and a guy with a silly hat.

"Sorry about the interruption." A waitress approaches your table with further apologies, "We'll have this cleaned up in just a moment. Were you guys already here?"
"We just showed up." You smile at her.

"Well, what are you all drinking?"
