1. What are some good ways of justifying FTL travel in a scifi setting?
2. What are some interesting/likely ways for futuristic space warfare to work?
3. How do you explain artificial gravity / how does your setting change without it?
Read the Ark Royal series. Self published on Amazon, so the writing is pretty standard, but the story itself is good and the space warfare is really fleshed out. Quite enjoyed those books.

>1. What are some good ways of justifying FTL travel in a scifi setting?
Wormholes or pre-human alien artifacts that have been reverse engineered.
>2. What are some interesting/likely ways for futuristic space warfare to work?
Pretty much boils down to "I'm the author and this is my fetish." It's much more practical to attack crew and commandeer ships at ports.

War:
Battles are akin to those in Risk.
Once you go to war with another country, you enter war mode. First, the attacker has to roll Xd6, where in X is the amount of base value the attacker wants to use. Can not be more than their max base value. Then the defender rolls Yd6, where in Y is the amount of base value the defender wants to use. Can not be more than their max base value. Then, rolls are sorted, from high to low. The next step can be explained best with an example:
Attacker chose to roll 4d6: 6,...

I don't have time to fully commit today, but may I suggest one "AI" nation that'll act as a rouge threat? It was a pretty fun aspect in the last game it was incorporated.

The massive shark surges through the water toward you. Pitiless black eyes are locked onto you, a mouth full of sword-sized razors yawning wide to shred your body and soul into so much chum. All around you, you can feel the beast's preternatural influence. The water you dwell in molds to its will, currents of sweeping force and walls of solid water hedging you in to a trap, a funnel designed to send you on a one-way trip into the bowels of that bloodied abyss. The scale-tags at its belly glow bright with the exertion. The whorls of crimson that edge its fins shine with...

There is a resonating sense of satisfaction in the White Claw as you call for more power. Threads of quicksilver wind their way down the brass filaments, seeping into your flesh. You can feel the gears and cogs churning beneath the surface of your skin accelerate their revolutions. Flywheels spin out of their housing. A crackling energy, an exaggerated burning of the soul, rises from deep within you.
You erupt.
The water around you churns as pointed gears bulge beneath the surface of your flesh. The currents nudged into being by the beast's natural power are...

Well, that really doesn't mean much - Jace coming to Innistrad was always about recruiting him to fight Emrakul.
True, it's almost certainly Emrakul she's summoning, but that image isn't confirmation.

You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, and right now is officially relaxation time. Your subordinates have orders to stop certain loud Lieutenants and their zanpakuto at the gate, and they know not to disturb you with paperwork until you actually put in an appearance in your office. For the time being at least it's possible to unwind from a long series of brutal engagements that have left you feeling exhausted and sore all over.
Outside you can see that unseasonable clouds have gathered in the sky, and a light rain has begun to fall on the Seireitei as you pick out an absentminded...

Yoruichi sets aside the newspaper entirely. “Yamamoto's faced this zanpakuto before. Records say he had a way to counter its effect but don't go into detail, so we'd have to ask him directly.”
“You sure none of the other old hands would know, like Unohana or Shunsui?” Speaking of whom, it seems like Shunsui is on the move at this very moment. Yoruichi seems to notice it as well, taking a moment before responding to your question.

Hey King.
After taking several small towns, occupying them and quarantining them in order to establish a foothold without giving away your position, you find yourself standing before a large wooden table, upon which is splayed the most accurate map of the Hielon territories you could find. Much of the layout of the snowy country is suggested, and you have no maps of the larger cities, but with this chart you can make out strategic points and the general location and distance between settlements.
The Hellraisers, ever dutiful, are busy keeping your forces from succumbing to the cold, since the banning of pants forces them to make due with less insulated means of dress. You've permitted the acquisition by force of hide cloaks and gloves, but the groans of icy thighs are almost loud enough to alert the enemy from thirty kilometers.
Meanwhile, your advisors are busy either organizing the men, or manning the equipment. The only person available to aid you in your research is Kyle, who is less than experienced in warfare. His most helpful suggestion so far has been to raid pantries for supplies as you march.
Now, you are mulling over the options of either force marching further east, toward the capitol, or west, to gain more land before the final sacking.

So if we take the capitol the other nations will try to conquer the rest of the land we left behind. I vote to go:
>East
Since we need to secure our conquer from the other nations this will give us a way to shelter our soldiers.
With all the people we capture daily, maybe we should take it slow now, and invest some funds into "insightful" "medical" "research".
You're GMing but you feel lazy today and just want something new for the players to beat up. This (fantasy) setting includes evil animal people for explicitly this reason. They're dumb, they're mean, they can use weapons, and they have quirky special abilities matching whatever specific animal they're based on today.
What are the best animals to use?
Personally, I usually default to rat, frog, and boar people.
rats - hoards, necromancy
frog - pulling attacks, hopping around
boar - pushing attacks, charging
Hornets.

Damn anon you know what's up. Rats, frogs and boar/pig people are usually what I go for as well for nasty animal people.
