He hated feminism, political correctness and society in general rather than women. I've heard that chemical dependence is really bad for social anxiety. Meaning, you get to where you believe you can't function without it, and use it as your entire coping mechanism instead of addressing the underlying thought patterns that are causing the anxiety in the first place.
Depression is partially biochemistry, so meds work well there. Social anxiety is almost entirely cognitive, and needs cognitive strategies to correct it.
