Robots, what would the most rational religion be based upon? Religion, when moderate, has been shown to have positive effects on communities.
I have been atheist for a long time, but I have started to become more religious. I was raised Episcopalian, so that's where I feel most comfortable, but I can't bring myself to have a lot of beliefs that mainstream Christians do. The trinity is an example. Also, why discount the possibility that works like the Quran, the Vedas, etc. are divinely inspired too? Where has God told us, except in the Bible, that only the Bible is divinely inspired?
I am attracted to a rational religion, one that can help stabilize my life and community. From here we can split the kinds of religions I am attracted to into three categories:
There's "INCLUSIVE" stuff like Unitarian Universalism, which prizes the unity of the divine and the acceptance of all thought as potential scripture, but sticks to a core of Christianity that denies the divinity of Jesus and the existence of the Trinity. Pros: simplicity, inclusion. Cons: watered down, strong stances impossible.
There's "REASON-BASED" stuff like Objectivism, which values the accomplishments of man in unbridled capitalism. These religious movements seek to use rational judgment. In the minds of Objectivists, man and his ingenuity ought to be worshipped, so they are. Pros: simplicity, understandability. Cons: fucking self-important, too political.
There are finally also "SCIENTIFIC" type movements, with scientific in big scare quotes. The prime example is Scientology (the core set of beliefs, not the Church organization). They attempt to describe humans and behavior through semi-scientific semi-ritualistic practices. Sometimes their beliefs stray from established science, but that's why it's a religion with beliefs, not a science. Pros: quantifiable, continuously growing. Cons: weird, easily ridiculed.
What is the best approach of these three? Why? What should the ideal religion value?
