It's the feeling of being accepted. Like a blanket when you go to bed.
It feels good to belong because it means you don't have to prove yourself constantly. When you are a recognized member of a group you can socialize with people more honestly and openly. You also can get invited to parties more and do more things, because when just one of your group is invited that means the entire squad is invited.

No. I like having the weekend shifts because it gives me an excuse for not having a social life. Plus it makes running errands and stuff easier since I always have a day or two during the week to myself and everything is open. Finally, it gets you on management's good side since in my experience finding people to work weekends is a pain in the ass for them.

I generally try to counter with something positive and then playfully tease my coworkers about having a rivalry/crush with those they trash talk. For example a lot of people at my old job used to talk a lot a shit about this one dude who was a real party animal. Raves, MDMA, probably had fried half his braincells, etc. And his work ethic was sometimes below average, but nothing to be fired over. However, when people would criticize him for that I would point out how he was really charismatic with the delivery guys and the customers. And that his general positive vibe contributed to the store in ways that were harder to perceive. I would then use myself to prove my point since I was generally the opposite (a hard worker but not exceptionally friendly) and my coworkers would usually see him in a new light.
