What you see here began as a series of comedy-centric stories with the concept of an alicorn-ascended Princess Applejack trying to change a mismanaged Equestria for the better by humorously interacting with the other, quite lazy, princesses.
Not to mention a whole bunch of Changelings with nothing better to do but cause mischief.
The whole thing was set in motion by this gem:

Revising Star Swirl the Bearded's spells and theories seems to be having something of a renaissance. Though with the stories focused largely around Ponyville, it's hard to say if that's actually a new trend, or if it's something unicorn scholars have been attempting with varying results through the years. He may not have been instantly recognizable to all and sundry on that Nightmare Night in Ponyville, but he's still enough of a figure to have a draw when exhibits come to town. And he's not even the only famous unicorn in the history books, just one of the most prolific.
Meadowbrook's enchanted items are still extant - what sorts of wonders might the eastern unicorns have wrought?

Starlight Glimmer's start in her philosophy was when a childhood friendship was separated by a cutie mark. It seems that Sunburst completely fell out of touch with her - did she make no attempts to contact him in his schooling? And however gifted he may have been, she herself seems rather talented in the magical arts - if she's still behind, there could be quite the wizard in training somewhere out there in Equestria. Could Twilight have ever met him in passing? She's made mention of high-level unicorns before - perhaps he's on his way there right now.
It does seem a little curious that he's vanished so totally from Starlight's life, even after she'd grown into a mare. She's shown no little aptitude for information gathering and pony location, and he's been on her mind for years.
