once we have 6 ap we'll be at near full dodge so we'll be safe while half-guard is on cooldown.

Actually, why not just pass completely? No need to use the rifle.
All it does is force us to spend half guard a turn early, as opposed to passing, staying still, start the battle proper with 6ap and activating half guard after our 6ap turn.
