So, how do I make a Wizard or Sorcerer in 5th edition that harkens back to the muscle wizards of Pathfinder and 3.5? I want to make an NPC encounter for my group that's this old wizard dude who throws off his cloak, is fucking ripped and proceeds to beat the shit out of everything with magic and fists, preferably magic fists.

Make him a shadow monk/warlock. He casts darkness as an AoE, can teleport all over the place because he is a shadow monk, and gets no disadvantages because he can see everything with Devil's Sight. He then proceeds to punch the living shit out of everything.

Hey /tg/. I'm a new player to tabletop RPGs in general, along with my friend group who I convinced to learn with me. We're all playing a game of Black Crusade right now, and I'm the GM. Since we're all new, we're all making an effort to identify our weaknesses as players and fix them, like if we realize that we roll initiative slowly or we're looking up the same few rules every time, etc.
Anyway, as a GM, I've noticed that I have difficulty improvising. If the players do something which I haven't anticipated and thus prepared for, I have a tough time adjusting my planned adventure to account for their choices. I have trouble thinking of ways to make it so that the logical consequences of their choices fit into the greater adventure I had planned for them, otherwise I'll be improvising a whole new adventure I hadn't even thought of. Thus, my instinct is to try to steer them back to the adventure I had planned out for them. I don't want my players to feel like I'm railroading them, though, I want to be able to craft the adventure to their preferences.
So what I'm asking is if you guys have any tips for a new GM playing Black Crusade about how to better improvise unanticipated player actions so I can create a better experience for them. Should I ask them what they think the logical consequences would be? Should I take a momentary break to consider what to do? Should I have some stock encounters or events on standby for just such events? Should I just explain to my players that I'm weak at improvising so them going off the rails won't be as satisfying for them since I'll struggle to keep up?
I think we should also consider the general question of whether I should try to get them back onto the adventure I had planned out somehow, or let them go off the rails and try to constantly make things up as I go so they can just do what they want.
Bump. So any tips, tricks, advice? Does anyone have any specific instances of where they or their GM managed to competently handle players going off the rails?

Biggest trick I learnt is the illusion of choice. Let the players make their decision, and if you can't deal with it well guide them back onto your original path.
Example:
Players pass by the tavern that the next big plot character was sitting in.

I saw this game at the mall board game shop a few days ago, looked neat, never played a tabletop board game before though. I was wondering if anyone had played this, if it is a good place to start and if it is fun.
I'm not a fan of the Dungeons and Dragons Light genre of boardgames, but my friend bought into the Kickstarter for this one so my group gave it a shot. We found it to be frustratingly swingy and didn't find much tactical depth.

Alright /tg/, i have a conundrum. I just got my players into D&D 3/3.5 a few months back. They understand the game VERY well and pick things up quickly. They roleplay their characters well but aren't afraid to take a step back to lighten things up a bit. They even have their own rulebooks and dice and we all contribute to minis and terrain stuff. My problem is that they are fucking luck incarnate. They roll nat 20's left and right, and when they roll a nat 1, it always ends up being a critical success on a crit fail (i came up with about a dozen tables for possible crit failures depending on circumstances and some outcomes are actually good or semi-avoidable because fuck "you failed so badly you stabbed yourself" ).
What does a DM do when they are smart enough to beat your puzzles and lucky/resourseful enough to take down a tarrasque in a half dozen rounds. Just being a dick and saying no is fucking weak.

Use 3D6 instead of D20 (3 being critical failure and 18 being critical success). It vastly reduces the number of crits.

that sounds less tedious than i came up with. I roll to crit, roll to confirm crit, then roll to comfirm a hit, then roll to confirm beating AC. they dont crit every time, but about once every 5 or 6 rolls they crit. they crit fail about that often too, but most of the time they avoid the consequences through reflex or something awesome happening.
Hey /tg/, I've been playing with my casual group for a while and was wondering what sort of fun formats would be best played with 4 people? We've tried two-headed giant and EDH but none were really satisfying. Suggestions and ideas would be welcome.
Try two-headed giant with the following caveats:
>Both players on a team share hands, mana pool, decks, graveyards, and exiles.
>You may swap who draws from which deck between partners once a turn (no point).

EDH had no effect?
EDH is my shit, I have a group of 4-7 depending on work schedules and whatnot, but EDH is the most fun shit out of all formats, in my opinion.
My main point for EDH is that cards never really get banned, so any card you pick up to play with is pretty much guaranteed to stay in the deck until the owner decides to take it out.
May I ask how you guys tried out EDH? How was it not satisfying?

Too small of a card collection so if we wanted to make a deck we had to throw in every single copy card of a single color in our individual collections to make a deck. They ended up as a no-synergy mess that was annoying to play with. Also didn't help that most of us only had one or two mono colored legendary creatures.

First we must define what a dungeon is.
What purpose does a mine have?
It really depends on what type of dungeon you are planning to use. Is it an abandoned ruin of some sort? A natural cavern? An artificially maintained structure?
Is the dungeon above or below ground? (And are you using dungeon to mean any monster infested adventure location, or something more specific?)
