It gives people a sense of control. Not having control is scary. So if you recite a mantra and reassure yourself that all you need to do to get out of a sticky situation is work a bit harder, you'll avoid collapsing into the pathetic, sobbing mess that deep down you know you are.
It might not be 100% accurate because shit juat happens inevitably, but it's the most productive approach.
Of course, that is as long as you don't drown yourself in regret/self-blaming and actually put the resulting frustration to good use

I recently came into some money. Not a lot, but more than I've ever had at one time.
