To gauge what kind of individual you are. Interviewers can read what kind of a person you are through body language and responses, even if you don't have any or much experience you're still likely the get the job if you show you're capable.
It's fucking disappointing. Would send a lot of resumes after I graduated with no experience whatsoever and they'd still call me for interviews in which they'd stress the importance of having former jobs for the position..
