Depends on what school and how good you are and what you want to do in life.

Animation programs at least are usually better than illustration programs. Worst case scenario you get a lot of life drawing and learn the basics of some programs. Best case scenario you learn drawing skills and animation skills and come out very hireable.

Is the work in your portfolio good enough to get a merit-based scholarship on entry or would this be the first time you've ever picked up a pencil?
>>
Hope it goes well but you don't have to. I started learning animation out of boredom on my own in 2012 and now have over 100 million views on youtube with 150k subs and have had job offers at actual animation studios. None of them cared i had no animation degree, just my work.

If you're gonna take out a huge loan and have debt it wouldn't be worth it imo.

Will drawing clothed figures in public moving, myself in a mirror, occasional family and friends who will sit clothed for a few minutes, and pictures get me to a level where I won't make a fool of me at a live model drawing session?

Also do they mind if you call and ask what types of poses and gender the model will be and maybe to send a few pictures beforehand so I can get an idea for her/him?

Also can you move around like 3-5 times during an hour pose instead of just doing it from one spot for an hour?

Nobody at those live drawing sessions cares. Just keep practicing my dude. Also, them are some long ass legs, I'd bring it down a notch or try to balance with midriff.

To celebrate the approach of the new Pokemon game, I thought it'd be fun to make a Pokemon themed draw thread. This thread is somewhat similar to the Tower Girls concept, however instead of creating fan art of a specific character you're creating an original concept to be added to a new generation of Pokemon designed by /ic/. To make things easier for those interested you can choose a Pokemon type using pic related, or go rouge and do whatever you feel like.

If enough people participate legendaries/starters can be chosen from the collection of entries made. I'll store all entries and make a graphic of them as we go along, so that there's something to reference in the polling stage. You can make as many Pokemon as you wish, and there's no set theme for this generation; you can make literally any kind of Pokemon you want.

If you have any issues with my info graphic or have suggestions for how I should handle things feel free to say so. As a note if this concept picks up steam I'll probably change pic related, make it a bit less shitty.

Anybody knows any good ressources for learning Design?
and I mean actual Designing. Real Designing Prinicples.

For the past few days I have been digging through tutorials, gumroads and workshops and everysingle time its complete bollocks
A nice fancy title like: Rules of Design. Then the commentator goes on like "I will put his here, you know, because its somehow really cool." "And I think I will add this, yeah! That's so cool!" (most of them were AAA guys, mind you)

Am I just missing something? Is Concept Design really like this?

To design from scratch (with or without spec) on the fly and narrate can be challenging for some people. I don't entirely blame them.

Most "good" resources are behind a paywall that some call school. The closest thing you can get is probably Design Cinema but Feng talks really fast but it's the closest I've gotten to getting decent advice in this area. Also he acknowledges that to go in-depth would be time-consuming and says that's what school is for, and I'm sure that's what most people (professionals/people who can give good advice) think as well. Also Scott Robertson's books are great and only like $20.

I went to art school for all that and it helps to have it beaten into you critique after critique, but I think studying graphic design principles translates really well into painting and drawing. Graphic design emphasises things like hierarchy with scale, boldness, limited color palette, value, positive/negative space, etc. These are basic design principles you will get in a community college design 1 course. Of course you'll be stuck doing boring shit like painting swatches and gluing cut out bits of paper, but it translates later. I had weird realizations in art school later on near graduation, everything goes back to those boring foundation classes. I never consciously thought about that stuff, but when I looked at my more successful work, it all tied into the principles of the boring paint swatches and glued paper exercises. I do recommend looking into graphic design books because they're more likely to emphasize these foundation skills than someone just "feeling" a painting. Things like scale, I personally had to consciously acknowledge every time I made a piece until it was ingrained in me to "just feel it". Some of my best illustrator friends are the ones that started as graphic design majors and switched to illustration.

It's mostly just practice and doing tons of thumbnails/sketches. Watch Eytan Zana's gumroads (color and light or something like that) and "read" the Skillful Huntsman
Syd Mead's Gnomon videos also depict the lenghty process of producing actually good looking and well designed pieces.

It's good that you're thinking about design at all though, most people here are just rendering fetishists and don't know anything about design.

Hey there /ic/. Haven't been here in quite a long time, and I was never really a regular. I haven't drawn anything aside from a doodle here or there in years. But the other day, I was sitting in a waiting room with nothing to do, so I flipped over a piece of paper and decided to draw. I have always just drawn creative stuff and I learned to draw from comic books when I was a kid, so I was never bug on caring how "realistic" something looked. But I decided to try and draw a man's face because when I do try and draw realistic, I always draw women.

For some reason Brad Pitt popped up when I googled "man face". All I had was a ball point pen I was given to fill out my paperwork, and this is what resulted...What do you think?

Also, I have to say I am extremely surprised if not a little bit terrified at the amount of work on here that is done digitally. Does anyone actually really draw or paint any more with real materials? WTF? I'm not knocking it, it's just very strange to me. It seems to really lack.....I don't know....it just feels artificial.

I see that, and I assumed that there was a draw thread. However, upon coming here, every single image I saw of a piece by an anon was done digitally. And that is the subject of this thread. I am not trying to hurt anyone's butt, I am asking why. Is it just because it is cheaper and more convenient? I don't feel that is a good excuse, as you can see, I drew this with just a ball point pen. I know it isn't great, but it has style at least.

First of all, this isn't your personal blog. Nobody cares about the context of babby's first referenced drawing. Second, if you lurked for even a few minutes, you'd answer your own questions.

Many, many people here post traditional pieces. Try posting in the beginner thread.

Newfag here. Don't know if there's a thread for this sort of thing (apologies in advance if there is) but I was hoping I might get some critiques/constructive criticism from the lovely cit/ic/ens around here. This is a series I started working on recently and any feedback would be appreciated.

4/4. I have more in mind for the future, but I want to improve my style a bit first, hence why I came here.

How the hell do people get their sketchbook pages to look so careful and deliberate? Like, you can just flip through every page and it's basically an unpublished "art of" book rather than a sketchbook. All of my sketchbooks are a fucking mess, usually if I want to do something finished, I do it on a free piece of paper or digitally.

I'm very new to Copic markers, and so far, I'm really liking them. Considering I want to do more bright JoJo-esque colouring like I did here, what colours would you recommend to me?

Also, general Copic thread. Show off nice colour combos and stuff.

Your drawing is really nice, but I think the background detracts from the main drawing, making it too busy. Personally, I usually just use one or two colors because I'm basic as hell.
>>
>>2568557
Hmm true, I think I kind of overdid the background in an overambitious attempt to stay true to the style. I think it would've worked out better if I left several of the patterns out or did them in a less saturated colour.
>>
Yeah, same as >>2568557 said. But very clean looking on that character, I like it

I haven't gotten into copics at all partially because they're expensive. I'm thinking about picking up like, one or two grey markers just for a few shades of values, though. Does anyone do this?

I plan to start making illustration portfolio specially aimed for card games. Though probably I don't have enough skill to land jobs in big card games like magic the gathering and legend of the cryptids, heartstone, I will be able to do the standard of some smaller card games; poxnora, spellweaver, hex to name a few. Do you have any tips on what illustrations should I make, or what ratio should I use. Please don't say obvious research the companies and do what they do, because I plan to do that. But maybe you guys can help me with tips what helped you on your journey.

Well you already said the obvious which is to do some research which is the best thing.

I've done work for small card companies and some things to keep in mind:
-the pay isn't great so try to work efficiently. This may mean using photos at some point in the process, or having organized layers and clipping masks, whatever works for you.
-get a clear value read/composition because they are often viewed very small
-get some variety in what you show, like maybe have some character pieces with different design, a card that shows a spell or action etc
-a small portfolio of strong pieces is better than a large one with inconsistent pieces
-I don't think the ratio matters as different games have different formats
>>
>>2558786

make a lot. quantity looks professional. don't overthink the work itself, these types of illustrations don't need to be masterpieces. they need primarily to have a good read and efficient use of contrast. other than that, yaeh make a lot. try to have 25+ illustrations. you don't have to show all but when your hiring dude scrolls down and sees that there's a ton of work, he'll immediately think of you as a seasoned veteran.
>>
>>2558792
Thanks!
I know it isn't much money, but we must start somewhere
How short are the deadlines?
>>2558800
As far as I know, quantity with quality looks professional. That aside I know they don't have to be masterpieces that take 40hours to finish and I plan to make around 20 pieces to send. Thanks for advice :)

Does anyone have this problem unexpectedly in PS CS6 and how to fix this?
Pic related, no webm unfortunately...
