Hey /ic/, I want to pursue art as a career and am willing to try my hardest to improve, but first here is my shitty stuff. I'm just here to ask you big players and successful artists about two things. The first is about my worries about art school. I'm almost to the point in life where I need to be thinking about college and I've seen a lot of people on here talk about how if they went back in time they would not go to art school because it was a waste of time and a lot of money. Is this true? Is there a specific school that would be good to go to? And last thing, I see people talk about putting in up to 6hr a day of just drawing. This is crazy to me because I don't know what they are talking about and/or how they do it. I wanna know how that works from some people that have put in that big of a grind, was it just drawing random stuff in the room for 6hr? How did you guys go about it? Anyway I just wanted to start this discussion in the hopes that I can thing more about my future and how I want to go about this whole idea of becoming an artist. Really I'm just here to get a good idea about what I'm getting myself into.
>>2570162
First let me ask you something.
Have you been reading the sticky?
>>2570162
Art School is great for someone like you who lacks the fundamentals and knowledge of art.
People can draw for 6 hrs+ because they know what to improve and always continue to do so
>>2570177
Yes I have, its pretty fun and it's keeping me interested and giving me structure, which I am grateful for.
My mind is fucked. I've given up on my goal of working as a comic/storyboard artist because it's not a realistic ambition and I can no longer bring myself to put effort into something I know I will fail at. The problem is my brain refuses to get out of artist mode so even though I quit drawing a year ago it has been absorbing inspiration and has been doing mental studies on its own to keep its skills up.
It feels like my head is going to explode. Would taking Adderall give me the focus to put my inhibitions aside and throw myself into what my subconscious mind wants?
Adderall's great buddy. But I think you're kinda being overly dramatic.
How old are you? It's not a bad idea to give up on a pro art career, but why not just do art for fun? You're completely done?
>>2568388
>adderall
>not PCP
>>2568388
Take this idiotic garbage to /b/.
I thought about quitting my job to become an artist. I already spend every free minute drawing/practising but I need more time. When I was still NEET I usually spent 5-8 hours drawing a day.
Any thoughts/experiences?
post your work
>>2568241
basically this
post your work + how long you've been drawing and that hsould give people a good enough indication on what the game plan is
>>2568237
Post some stuff you must have hundreds of drawings laying around. Post your best stuff.
Also, dont listnen to ANYONE here. their opinion is just as valuable as a pile of dogshit.
Walt Disney got rejected ALOT before he could publish. Loads of other artists aswell, the thing is, you should STOP caring about the opinion of others, and create your own art with love. That's all there is to it. And when people say its not good enough, go to someone else (publisher, whatever person you need to achieve your dream) after the 20th time someone say its not good enough, GO TO THE NEXT!.
That's it, that's all there is.
P.S. I forgot, ofcourse your art is important, but how you sell it is just as important. Your first impression when you walk in the room with said publisher, they way you talk, your intonation, the gestures YOU make. Take a course in selling / being confident whatever, since you were a NEET zo long you prbably have the social skills of a potato, so work on that.
Good Luck
>be me
>have a friend who's been drawing for longer than you
>friend's art style hasn't changed in the past 6 years you've been friends
>friend won't use references or study from life
>tfw
and it's not like they're awful at art, it's just frustrating since i know they want to become an animator / storyboard artist and they won't be able to do that career if they don't improve or at least try something new. we're almost done with high school and it's so frustrating to see all our other art friends basically leave them in the dust and i don't know what to do ): any thoughts?
(pic unrelated, but it is my art! i post sometimes in the draw threads + alt art threads so hmu if you have any comments + critique)

>they're, they, them
let me guess, she is a tumblr artist who prefers pronouns they/them/theirs?
>>2563597
right on the money, though i'm usually pretty lenient about that stuff so i don't really care so long as it's not that fluff/fluffself bullshit
>>2563594

How do I stop retain everything I learn?
Every time I take a break from breaking real life objects down into simple 3D forms, I have to redraw them for 3 hours before I'm back to where I was before the break.
Is it best to just do 30 minutes of drawing even if I don't feel like it?
>>2569331
When I was at my peak in life drawing, I could slice through objects with my eyes. I was able to easily see the form in any thing in real life.
As soon as I got to that point, I quit doing it. I thought I would be good, and that the knowledge would never leave me. I was totally wrong.
If I get back to where I was, will continuous practice bring me to a place where I can take a break from life drawing?
You're gonna have to define "Break", OP.
>>2569862
3 weeks of no drawing at all.
Hey all.
I'm not a very good painter in almost every facet. My ability to picture and frame colors is lackluster, my ability to translate sketch to lineless color fields is pretty bad, etc.
I'm a fairly decent animator though, but that doesn't mean much when you don't have the budget to hire background painters.
So, I decided that I would sit down, and really learn the ins and outs of digital backgrounds.
Over the last couple days, although I didn't work on it yesterday, I came out with pic related.
It's not done, but I'm dipping down into the fluid layers of the wheat, so I'm just being cautious.
Anyone have any tips for background painting?
>>2567407
maybe lower the resolution of your painting?
>>2567409
Why's that?
>>2567407
I find it helps to think about painting as tone on tone.

Cool story bro, are we supposed to take in in good faith?
Without pics, my objectivity standards tell me that they me be right, and that you may have reacted like a bitch causing them to back off. But maybe you're right? I can't tell without evidence.
post your work
Sorry you had to learn that lesson the hard way, anon.

Where should you go with Loomis after/not including "Fun with a Pencil" ?
Is "Successful Drawing" the next step? Or is it "Drawing the Head and Hands" or one of his other books?
>>2568900
I think it is "Figure Drawing for all its worth". Then "Drawing heads and hands".
>>2568900
I personally don't quite fancy "Figure Drawing for all its worth", despite all the good things inside the book it didn't click with me as other authors did.
"Drawing the Head and Hands" is pure gold, so is the one I recommend.
>>2568982
Thanks, I'll work on that one!
So... do you guys have a different nick name from your "pen name"?
what do you think about it?

I just use www.firstnamelastname.com, but I am lucky that my last name is uncommon.
I say fuck em. You do you OP
I use a nickname plus my last name since by my local standard, I have a generic as fuck name + last name combination that literally blends in with everyone elses.
Im drawing concept art for a comic I'm planning.
Ive been drawing for about 13 years with minimal classes, what should I do to improve?

FAQ:
Something's broken, what do I do?
>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email [email protected].
What do we draw?
>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.
What's a low effort warning?
>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.
>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.
What happens if I'm eliminated?
>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.
How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?
>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.
Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?
>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

Hello /ic/! I have a little question as a begginer.
I don't have time to draw but I really want to get good at it. Some friends of mine that draw too told me that, to improve, you just have to draw 15 minutes every day.
Is this true? What can I do to have a drawing habit?
Draw minimum 15 minutes a day but EVERY DAY. Start now. After developing a habit you will eventually start drawing more.
But again - draw EVERY DAY.
>>2568257
Okay, thank you!
>>2568246
Basically what >>2568257 said. You just need to alway have with you a pen and some paper or journal to draw on. This way you'll always manage to find some time to draw, while waiting for the bus or whatever.
That being said, you would progress faster by reading the books suggested in the sticky then applying that knowledge to your daily session, but of course it's a greater investment in effort and time. Anyway first get the habit of drawing everyday, you'll see soon enough if you crave for more or if you're satisfied.
