Ever played a game where you or a party member was (plot twist) the evil all this time ?
I ran a game where I planned on having one of the party members pull an "ultimate betrayal" and steal the McGuffin to hand over to the BBEG. I made the worst mistake and actually told the player in question that I wanted him to do it, and he then proceeded to make it painfully obvious that he was an evil guy instead if laying in wait for the time in which I'd tell him to do it. Thankfully the game didn't last long, and in my defence it was near the beginning of my GMing career, so I very much doubt I would make the same mistake again. If I were to do it now...

So in various 40k sourcebooks it's mentioned that shotguns and other low penetration weapons are favored by those fighting on space ships and stations as they're less likely to puncture holes in the hull.
This confuses me, as I was under the impression that even relatively small civilian stations and ships in 40k were heavily armored bulks that no small-arm short of a lascannon would stand a chance of piercing.

You are being a dunce that thinks "hull" refers only to the outside of the ship.
The inside of the ship is lined with wires, piping, all the things that make the ship run, including ports that lead to vacuum. Destroying any of those could lead to catastrophic damage to the ship.

this is one of those things that sounds to the writers like it makes sense, but does not work all that well. It is pretty common in other sci-fi that need too build their spaceships with real-world (ish) tech and so need to keep it's mass low, but like you said, puncturing the hull of a 40k starship with a smallarm is not going to happen.
Rogue Trader gave a little more sense to the concept, by stating that they use low-velocity waepons to not pierce bulkheads (that can seal of sections of the ship...

I want to run a gritty military campaign for my first game, but I've barely even played RPGs before and have a really shitty imagination. What are some ideas I can use to make a game interesting for more seasoned players?Rules will be modified Only War if it matters.

Don't just devolve into combat, try to prep in a way that causes conflict, try to have fleshed out NPCs, and try to have 4 different plans based on what players might do. The plans should be flexible rather than specific.
