Why does the uselessly vague and flavorless term of "magical energy" appear in basically every RPG with magic, and even a lot of fantasy fiction in general?
Even worse is when "pure magical energy" shows up as some mysterious source of projectiles or barriers.

Look at it this way, it is energy that is magical in nature.
Just as heat is a form of mundane energy. And sound is a form of energy.
Magical energy is the same shit, but magic. It's nothing specific just like "energy" in real life doesn't mean specifically something like electricity.

In my setting, "Pure magical energy" literally does nothing, because anything made of "Pure magical energy" is indistinguishable from the background magic. In fact, that IS the background magic.
To cast spells, the magic must be weaved into patterns, or given flavors, or otherwise be mucked with in some way. This makes the magic do something.

It’s been about a month since we’ve returned from Oendal, glad to put the the dirty, grimy city behind us.
I’ve returned to my studies, learning more about witches and boggarts still, while Mr Johnson continues life as normal, scribbling notes out, day after day, taking odd work.
Winter’s well and truly set in now, even in Arling, the gorgeous red of the apple trees leaves turning to bare branches all the way into town. That’s a shame.

I thought they were like shields where they take up one space regardless of cost. Apparently they either use Space Efficiency to only take up one space, or they are like handheld weapons in that they're limited by the spaces available in that arm. Either way, once I figure out which it is, you'll get free CP automatically spent on Space Efficiency to make them kosher as a dill pickle.
In most role-playing games, women seem to fall somewhere between "completely equal to men in status and ability" and a sort of compromise between that and traditional historical gender roles, where men have most of the power and perform most of the dangerous and important (non-domestic) jobs, but exceptional women who are on relatively even footing with men are not uncommon. That's a pretty safe, comfortable range that gives everybody the freedom to do what they want, and it's probably best for most campaigns.
But I'm interested in hearing about games where the role of women falls outside this range. Are women in your games little more than chattel? Or maybe they're put on a pedestal but kept safely away from danger? Or do they actually have an advantage over men in terms of status or ability?
Do people play characters of the disadvantaged gender in such games? How does that work out? How do the PCs treat "the lesser sex" in general? Are your players hesitant to fully embrace what they may see as sexist roles, or do they seem to actually relish them?
Note: I couldn't care less about your evaluation of women's capabilities relative to men's in real life. We're talking about role-playing games in fantastical, imaginary worlds here, and that doesn't really apply. I do, however, expect to see plenty of it and ask folks here not to derail the thread arguing against it, but rather to see it as people "getting into character" and espousing an in-game viewpoint.
Also Note: This is sure to get fetishy in short order. That's pretty much unavoidable, given where we are. I just ask that you don't stray too far from the topic at hand, and if that kind of thing bothers you, that you ignore it rather than bickering over it.

in most fantasy games. Remember adventurers are exceptional people, so I don't have a problem with "muh stronk empowered womyn" showing up as PCs. There are numerous historical examples...

What should be the limits of the DMPC? I've been thinking about this, and I think it's fine if it's needed as long as the DMPC is not the party leader, meta knowledge and all that.
I might have to be a DMPC because my party doesn't have a cleric, and they literally might die without one in game.

Beats me. I've always treated my NPCs as NPCs. Just keep it real and it should be fine.
The most important rule for a DMPC is that it's not about them. You get together with some friends to roll some funny-shaped dice and tell a story, but the story is about the players' characters and their interactions with the world, not the DMPC's story. You can use a DMPC as a support character, means of exposition, and can even offer hints. As long as the vast majority of solutions come from players, you should be fine.

Cleric is probably the best kind of DMPC to have, because you literally just throw buffs and heals around without really needing to do that much direct work.
ITT: Post people being enthusiastically horrible people. Whether its volunteering to torture or steal, smugly bragging about a scam they have going, or passionately detailing the wonderful misdeeds they witnessed someone else committing.
I need to get in the mindset of someone who is passionately sick, malicious or awful for a game I'm in where I'm playing a thouroughkly immoral chemist who takes cues from stereotypical evil Nazi doctors.
Plus depictions of this sort of evil is often good for a laugh even when its utterly horrifying.
