The debate about whether pornography is harmful or not has been a long-standing one, but I have a feeling that VR porn is going to inflame it even higher. Unlike traditional porn, the user can dictate what happens (to a certain extent). How exactly do we set boundaries for this kind of thing? If an actress doesn't want to do something, how do you prevent the users of these games from doing such things to her virtual avatar? These games can allow guys to basically molest virtual women. Would they be violating their boundaries, or should they be free to do whatever they wish to these avatars?
Suppose that these games can be modded for new scenarios and props to re-enact fetish scenarios. There is basically no way to prevent people from doing whatever they wish with these avatars short of extreme DRM (and even that can be cracked).
Then we have the ability to alter the avatars. What if a guy decides to change the skin tone of a black actress to white? Or makes a chubby actress skinny? That's pretty damn offensive to the original actresses, but what exactly could be done about it? What if a guy wants to do a hetero scene with a scan of a lesbian actress?
And of course there's the dark path of VR scenarios simulating illegal acts such as bestiality, pedophilia, snuff, rape, etc. A lot of the guys on Reddit who are chomping at the bit for VR porn aren't...the most mentally stable or progressive guys. Letting them literally act out twisted acts like rape strikes me as a very, very worrying thing.
Of course I could just be losing my mind over nothing, but this is something I want to bring up regardless. Even the most offensive and misogynistic porn is still uninteractive. VR porn will allow these maladjusted men to literally insert themselves into and act out these violent fantasies. I can't help but find this somewhat troubling.
