Keep those less frequent dots where there is light and more frequent dots where it's darker. Just remove those lines and see what it looks like

Hey, guys as I mentioned in the Super Pose Book thread that used to exist I ordered all 24 Super Pose Books, well 10 have arrived now and another 13 are on their way from CDJapan and 1 is still on preorder.
I've got a knife ready to start cutting the pages out the binding but I still don't have a scanner. I asked you guys what scanner to get but you told me I was a liar, I forgive you.
So what scanner should I get? Cost isn't a concern.

Hey /ic/ I was wonder what is a decent digital art program for beginners. Is there anything out there that gives me the essentials, but isn't too complicated for me to use? Thanks in advance.
anon the only programs out there that are not complicated are microsoft paint and programs that are stripped of their essentials(for painting anyways).

Manga studio(painting,inking,line but tools are garbage)
TVpaint**(animation,painting,line,ink all sorts of stuff, but if you wana get through this damn thing you need to read the manual)
Gimp**(painting,line,ink its a buggy program however)
Krita**(painting, line, ink,animation its a buggy program)
Jasc Paint**(painting priority it has all the stuff that makes a drawing program)
all of these programs have the same capabilities from the core, but some lack different functions to manually change pressure, tilt and all that jazz from your tablet.

If there were such a thing as a drawing app for beginners, I wouldn't recommend it to beginners. Just go for photoshop and ignore the stuff you don't understand yet, don't pay for it tho.

Worth mentioning the open-source freebies in this list, namely Krita and Gimp. They may have bugs (all programs do) but development is constant and open for observation.

I look at art because I like to see pretty stuff, or for strong storytelling, not to be told for the 2500th that I should care about women rights and and fight against the reptilian illuminati government. Memes rarely give me that "Oh god that looks gorgeous" or "I'm feeling so many emotions right now" kind of deal.

How important is drawing ability for painting? I remember some artist saying that "Painting is 90% drawing", but I'm ok with drawing and have a lot of difficulty with painting, especially oils.

You'll only be able to paint as well as you can draw. However, an encouraging spin on it is that painting is simply drawing with color.
The rules of value, form and hue still apply.
Try a 2 color painting with a warm and cool hue, identifying form and shadow and getting a feel for the medium.

What does /ic/ think of an artists like Phil Hale who works exclusively with reference and still manages to put out creative illustrations? I know E.M. Gist who does oil painted comic book covers also uses reference every time. Not to mention all the contemporary figurative fine artists.

I agree that it is limiting when it comes to composition, you're at the mercy of what you can do with the model and lighting, or the photo. But to be fair if you're going for a certain level of realism not having a reference can be limiting as well.
I'm not saying it's impossible to make things look realistic without reference but it's at a much lesser degree than someone who uses reference. Take someone like Frazetta who worked from imagination, his illustrations are great and obviously...

Regardless of what /ic/ says the majority of professional artists use reference. Everyone on here thinks that using reference means sitting there and making a photocopy then changing a few details but that's not how you use it. You come up with your idea and find reference to help you add believability, whether that's rendering and texturing, posing, coloring, whatever and that's applicable to hyper realistic art as well as the simplest cartoons.
