Why are people still falling for the Loomis meme in 2016? Loomis books are objectively boring and useless. Want to learn fundamentals? Get the Scott Robertson and Feng Zhu Gnomon dvds. Want to learn to construct the figure? Get the Michael Hampton book and subscribe to Proko. Want to improve your figure drawing? George Bridgman and Burne Hogarth. Want to broaden your knowledge of anatomy? Glenn Vilppu and Scott Eaton's videos. There is literally not a single reason to be reading Loomis in the year of our lord 2016.

Loomis is supposed to be a simple introduction for all the topics he covers. If you think it would be wise for a beginner to to jump right in to bridgman and hogarth, then you've never read either of them

Notice how the order of recommendations went from fundamentals to basic construction, to figure drawing. Bridgman and Hogarth are not what I recommended for fundamentals, so who didn't read what?

You study meat, google rotten meat and normal meat and do value studies of it.
Some food studies might help too, remember is all rendering.

So how would I go about deliberately designing monsters, then? Even though the best examples seem organic, there has to be some kind of underlying design philosophy for what is terrifying.

What websites have you guys used to find models in your area? And what's a good hourly rate to pay models?

I just ask my friends, or girls want to model for me, but this is because i am a photographer but i also ask if i can live paint using them as models they usually say yes.

Other than that just ask friends and have a good portafolio they would probably model for free if your good.
>>
If you don't have any friends, you can contact your local life drawing classes (Google : cityname + life drawing) and ask if they can put you in touch with their models.

What do you think about contemporary art and why?

I'm an artist in a graduate school that is very engaged in the theory of contemporary art and how it relates to other disciplines as well as art theory/history. I'm trying to gauge the general perspective/understanding that other communities have of contemporary art.

Also, feel free to ask me any questions related to contemporary art.

/ic/ doesn't count for shit bro, this board is full of teenagers who are weaning themselves off of anime as they dream of becoming MtG card illustrators once they're out of high school.

generally speaking /ic/ has no appreciation for modern or post-modern art, and has 0 appreciation for art history. you honestly will have much better luck on the art history subreddit.

Generalization bruh, there are some non illustrators here, I'm trying to get my fine arts on, taking some courses at the Uni painting and reading studies on the side attending receptions discovering the contemporary in my local context. Don't write off ic

Anyway, my issue is these 400level courses relate to art at a higher non medium specific level. Have any texts or artists / resources you can drop in regard to painting?

I've been digging the screen works of Dave Stonhouse as of late,...

Despite the fact that the rules state not to be insulting and instead be constructive with your criticism on here, I'm not surprised that no one here seems to know how to do anything but be a douche to one another, especially people who are very clearly beginners.

So what does constructive criticism mean to you, d/ic/ks? Does it mean yelling "Loomis" and nothing else? Does it mean telling someone they suck, their art is garbage, that they should give up? Does it mean telling someone what areas they need to work on, and possibly how to go about it?

It's...

>Does it mean telling someone they suck,
Yes. Look, I know it's not nice, but the foundation of criticism is pointing out flaws. "It sucks" isn't great criticism by any measure, but sometimes there's little else to same. What do you say when everything is wrong? And some people just need to be told their work is bad to break through their ego and give them the kick in the ass to work on their art. Some people need that harshness, and this is 4chan, the perfect...

While I agree that sometimes people's egos are a little too inflated and need to be taken down, I see it said to absolute beginners who aren't confident in their skills and just want some genuine feedback on if they're on the right path or not. While I'm sure you, anon, would give a bit more help than just "It sucks." I see a lot of comments that are literally the insult and nothing else. No encouragement to start over, no push towards fundamentals, just an insult and that's it, and...

I'm going to be a little blunt on this, but I only accept constructive criticism from someone at my level or higher, or someone that really really knows the subject at hand by backing what he says with precision.

I already know what people say to this, "but you don't need to draw well to give good criticism" and that's maybe true, but it's something I just don't accept on principle, I will always value the better artist's view than the shitty stickman drawing guy. If I...

233 KB,
Been a long time like a weekish and the thread is long overdue, hopefully what would be great is that if I can't find any time to make a new thread then other anons should do it for me, just like the draw threads.

So as you can tell by the subject of the thread, what we'll be working on today is a concept known as interlocking forms. Like I mentioned ages ago that a warhammer illustration just contains thousands of objects/gradients - likewise those objects in some instances or many can be locked together to form strange and complex objects/shapes. This...

I also recommend you do 2 segments on basic shapes, not going into detail and the finale 2 segments based on some form of human anatomy or complex mechanical forms that you may find in.. say a stripped down engine for example.

Good luck. Have fun and this thread is to help everyone learn together.

Don't spend too much time on drawing one picture.

t. someone who only draws ellipses, straight lines and basic head construction, literally nothing else
>>
>>2375337
What works for me is, instead of drawing something and polishing it, I draw the thing I want to draw with minimal detail, usually smaller too. Then I draw it again changing what doesn't feel right, and then again until I can feel good about it. Then I polish it.
Even if it's polished shit, I know I tried my best to elevate it from being shit before polishing.

I need some opinions on whether to buy a Wacom cintiq 2nd hand or a surface pro for less money, I want to be able to take which ever anywhere and to be able to stream and draw at the same time. Any opinions are helpful.

For me, I always buy equipments like this brand new rather than 2nd hand in order for you to avail the warranty it has.

Also, if you buy a 2nd hand gadget, try to buy something refurbished from the manufacturer or someone you trust.

Or , if you are patient enough, try to wait until the price drops before you buy it. Nothin bad with buying an older tech as long as it does the job.

Just my take, OP.
>>
>>2369547
depends. If it isn't a cintiq companion then you wont be able to draw on it without a laptop to power it up. The companions are like regular tablets, all others are regular monitors.
