what exercises do you do to learn clothing?

i feel like i know the theory in terms of single pieces of cloth and the varieties of folds, but i just get overwhelmed when it comes to adding clothing to a figure

eh, practice drawing drapery from life? look at a curtain and draw it, look at your jeans and draw it, wake up in the morning but don't make your bed and draw your sheets...

check out the still life thread. drapery is also a popular still life subject and you use the same principles as drawing still life
>>
>>2385439
Well from experience you gotta have a sense of gravity to make the curves and you have to have prior knowledge in the materials that made up the cloth.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun!

Thanks, I think I kind of have a grasp, I would have tried to implement it but as nose bro pointed out the hands did not connect so I had to scrap it in order to make a pose that actually fit the hands.

Before you even open up a loomis book you should practice still lifes.

The meme spam on here can be very harmful to new artists.

Loomis expects a decent understanding of the fundamentals before you start copying from his books.

Still lifes are the best way to get better at the fundamentals. My drawings all felt flat before I started doing still lifes. Pic related.

This is after just 3 days of still lifes.

how do you hold your pen/pencil/whatever? Pics pls

Because I really can't help but wonder something. i mean shit i wonder a lotta things but yanno

Could the way I've been holding it since as a child be affecting my drawing? Pic related. Sorry it's a little harder to tell the difference, but to me, it is a huge difference.

Left pic which is the "correct" way that I never learnt is pretty much holding it between your thumb and index. It feels really stiff to me and awful and all.
Right is holding it between my middle...

Either normal tripod grip or holding the pencil on its side. I tried the Jeff Watts way but found it way too awkward, couldn't even draw a straight line like this.

>>2384508
A calligrapher's grip is more like OP's left pic, but with the pen more upward, resting on the finger instead of the hand itself.

Any advice when it comes to drawing lips/nose/eyes? I was able to draw an eye pretty well, but I went to draw a different eye from reference and it looked flatter than hell.

The same issue arises when drawing noses/lips. How can I make them look like proper 3D forms without shading? If I draw them they look like flat ugly outlines. How much help will drawing less lines do?

sounds like you're symbol drawing. how good is your ability to draw basic 3d shapes in perspective (cylinder, sphere, cube, cone)?

if you can draw these basic forms, you can use that knowledge to draw more complex forms like noses, lips, and eyes.
>>
>>2384977

But I'm not, I can draw 3D just fine.

I just don't know why these aren't coming out right.
>>
>>2384974

you are a fucking idiot op. you can't draw in 3d at all. what you can do is plot some boxes in perspective.

> looked flatter than hell.
> How can I make them look like proper 3D forms without shading?

what a fucking idiot.

Is buying a used tablet any good?
I'm getting an intuos pro m, and I've got the chance to buy it half the normal price which is a significant differance.
On the other I wonder if it won't be used up or what not. I have yet to ask how long did the previous user have it.
While on the other hand I just feel uneasy, as if being denied untoched, virgin device.
What would You suggest?

Wacom tablet are general quality and can be bought used, but look that you get the pen with extra exchangeable nibs (the thin tip of the pen), since they are rather expensive (up to 15$ for 5 little pieces of worthless plastic), that the surface of the tablet is not worn out too much and if the usb cable is directly connected to the tablet (not interchangeable like Intuos 3) , check for its condition. Also you should rather ask this in the question thread, while you get probaly more answers with this thread, it can be deleted within hours, since tablet threads are semibanned.
>>
You can use weedwhacker wire as pen nibs theres a vid on youtube about it
>>
>>2384819
get a huion. dirt cheap for what you get, and as long as you're careful with the usb port it'll last you a while.

So my personal opinion is that between attending art collage and self teaching, self teaching is definitely better if you are smart about it.
Between self teaching and attending a good atelier program, atelier programs win out by a long shot.
The Atelier programs I can recommend are The Florence Academy of Art, Angel Academy, Swedish Academy of Realistic Art and The Repin Academy. I attend one of these and have frequent contact with students at the others, they all have have good instructors and produce highly skilled students. If you want to learn how to properly draw...

>>
>>2384678
Art college is worth it if you won't destroy your life with debt

But they won't necessarily teach you techniques
I went to one in London and it was the best time of my life I loved it

I studied sculpture but if I could go back in time I'd do illustration.

Dip pen thread.
I've been wanting to start with dip pens and I've heard a lot of conflicting information about how to get the coating that the nibs come with off. I was told burning them with a candle is the most effective way, but other sources have strongly advised against it because it can warp the metal.
Also, how important is the brand of ink you use? Which one do you prefer?
25 replies and 1 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
burning is ok, if the metal turns red, you've gone too far. A couple passes through a lighter will do.

I've only ever used speedball stuff when I messed with nibs. I plan to get back into traditional line work soon, so I'll have to experiment.
>>
I use deleter paper so I use their ink too.

>Brause music nib not staying in any nib holder, even the ones from the same brand

I'm interested to hear about your experiences with art workshops or other online services offering art education be it CGMA, conceptart.org LEVEL UP!, pencilkings.com oor whatever else you used and how it helped you if it did.

workshops are garbage, take the actual classes or a mentorship on patreon.
CGMA, schoolism, some of the learnsquared shit is good. If you're gonna do a mentorship make sure the teacher is worthwhile, like james paick, john park.

So there is only 1 person here who used any of them?

Take with a grain of salt or outright ignore all career/industry advice. It will become dated by the time you can apply it, if not already.

Anything that strengthens foundation, sure.

How to use a program, sure. (but if you cant figure out 80 percent of this on your own you are helpless)

But at some point this stuff serves as more entertainment than education.

taste + discipline will produce decent to good results.

People use Tumblr for exposure. There's a lot of people on there and you can get your work seen by a lot of people. It's also simple and easy to use.

Wordpress I've seen mostly by people running their own site, and it has a good degree of customization as far as I'm aware. There's even a plugin for comics called Comicpress, IIRC.

Hey guys, about a week ago I and my partner launched our web comic "Death, Acceptance and Everything In-Between". I know it seems like shameless promotion (and to some extent it is) but we're really aiming to find the most raw criticism that we could get. I'd really appreciate it if you took the time to read it and give some feedback about whatever you think needs improved.

Here's the link to it: http://tapastic.com/episode/274644
