I was shorted in life… one way or another something always came up short; this layoff is just another shortage in the story of my life. It wasn’t as if I wasn’t expecting it. The whole town had been waiting for it to come, like a train wreck, or a dead body that we all just couldn’t wait to see. It was fueled by a curiosity that simple resolution couldn’t solve. Only being a part of it could satisfy that craving. Everyone had a chance to quit and go somewhere else. Yet we all stayed, knowing we’d lose our jobs. The biggest reason for staying was that we hoped to make it through. When the truth is, we couldn’t resist seeing who didn’t make it. To say it was anything less than masochism would be a lie. To call it anything more than sadism wouldn’t be wrong though. It wasn’t a matter of if simply when, when was it going to happen. I knew what I wanted, others could be in denial but I know what I want. I want to watch it burn; I want to be the catalyst and kick off the best damn show this shithole ever saw. Let’s burn with a flame bright enough for everyone to watch. For everyone to stop. For everyone to fuel. If this world belongs to us, and if we want it beyond a morbid curiosity then the flames that brighten our lives will subside and we will drift into a deeper level. Skulking away in our rarest form. Let me be the one to break you lord and show you another type of light.

The first first sentence uses "short" or some variation thereof three times. Remove the dot dot dot as well.

This doesn't read right, as it's a continuing state. I had always been, I was continually -- both would work better. In the second sentence I'd find another way to express the idea of shortage so it sounds less repetitive.
You also have a couple tense issues. "this layoff is" should be "this layoff was." "When the truth is" should be "When the truth was."
Anyway, besides some of the style/grammar issues, the paragraph feels long winded for what it's trying to express. You can cut down a lot of the excess and it'll sound less purple. Currently, bits of it border on cheesy.

I've been marathoning x-files in the background while im drawing
I listen to mostly Dungeon Synth or random death/black metal while drawing. I like EBM too, but it doesn't seem conducive to me getting anything done, I usually end up just dancing in my seat.
one of my resolutions was getting more literature in, so i've been listening to a bunch of audiobooks.
my favorites so far are The Things They Carried read by bryan cranston, Lolita read by jeremy irons, Slaughterhouse-Five read by ethan hawke, and To Kill a Mockingbird read by sissy spacek
My artwork looks better tradtional, so I decided to scan it instead of digitally inking my pencil lines.
The only problem is...as you can see, the lines when viewed close up, have very rough edges to them. And any small bits of pencil left in the drawing are converted into tiny black marks on the page.
How do I set my scanner so that It picks up only the pure black lines without making them so rough and jagged?

I'm interested in experimenting with pastels. Mostly interested in painting portraits/figures, and would like to aim for a good amount of detail.
I've currently got my eye on Prismacolour NuPastels, the 12- or 24-set, as well as a Strathmore assorted colours pad, and would like to know if that's a reasonable choice/pairing for my purpose.
Overall, I'd like to stay in an 'under $25' range to start with, staying as cheap as reasonably possible.
I know getting properly into pastels is hella expensive, but I have no idea if I'll end up liking the medium at all, so I really want to cheap out right now. I'm going into it assuming that I'll either love it and completely replace whatever materials I start with, or I won't love it and either way the starter set will gather dust. Hence, expendably cheap.
At the same time, I don't want to cheap out SO much that I go off in the wrong direction and give myself an incorrect impression of the medium. So I want to stay cheap, but not prohibitively shit.
Any guidance would be really awesome.
Also, pastel general I guess, go for your life!

I really love pastels, the nupastels are good, I think they're more of mid ground in terms of price and quality. They feel buttery, lots of pigment and they layer on top of each other easily. I'd say it's a good choice to begin with because if you ever go to the really high quality ones you will know how to treat them well (I'm talking about the ones that are almost all pigment and no binder). I wouldn't go with cheap ones because you really have to dig into the paper with them, very little pigment so you might not like the product. If nupastels are too expensive and you live in the US you can go to craft stores like Michaels or other art stores and get their brand, they're usually fairly good, not quite nupastel quality but good to start with. I know of a skin tone pack that Michael's sells that actually has a good amount of pigment and they actually feel pretty good. Art stores will sell pastel shanks individually so if you have a chance to go to a store you can actually feel the pastels yourself. I personally like the nuspastels but I switch between those and the rembrandts,

I actually live in Australia. I was doing a bit more digging, and it turns out I pretty much can't get the Strathmore paper shipped here for some reason, so I'll probably go local with Art Spectrum Colourfix paper instead as far as that goes.
I can still get Nu Pastels here easy enough, and while they're no bag of chips, they seem to be among the cheapest you can get before you suddenly drop into the absurd "100-pack for $2" kids' stuff, so it's great to hear Nu Pastels are also good quality.
BUT, while looking at their papers, I also noticed Art Spectrum's pastels are actually supposed to be top notch. They'd completely obliterate my 'cheap out now, replace it later' philosophy, but unlike a lot of other brands available to me, they also come in quite affordably small sets geared towards specific subjects, rather than just general assortments where every stick might not be too useful and there are few in-between colours.
I don't know if you've personally used this brand, but as far as pastels go in general, do you think a more focused range of colours might be a better place to start? I'm kind of leaning towards the 20 half sticks (pic related).

Generally soft pastels are the really expensive ones. If you want detail harder pastels like the Nupastel are a good bet. I'd get Polychromos instead if they're similarly priced, or a set of Contés if you want something harder that won't leave as much dust.

This image is stylized but it's very clear that the artist is very skillful and could have done the image realistically if they wanted to. But they wanted to do it like they did because it looks cooler
Sometimes style is done to speed up the process and it's fortunate that simplistic styles can look good if done well. Realism takes an awful lot of time and with the invention of photography like >>2387214 said, it's just boring.
