How can I draw something with a high-angle shot ?
Pic related, I would like to draw a character watching the "camera" with this kind of angle but more exagerated.

I can't find any model or tutorial for this, so I ask here

Draw a box around the character.
>>
>>2515157
Angle is all fucked up in that picture. It just looks like she's leaning back.
>>
>>2515157
Lot's of repetition in figure drawing and studying how perspective works.

Just lots and lots of study.

your very being craves failure. To return to your mother's womb. Enter the void. Embrace futility, and burn in agony as your hurdle through space shedding tears like ice crystals behind a comet heading for the sun.

How do I go about finding shadows on a form that is cast by itself? For example on a body, shadow cast on the face by a brow, nose, ear, etc.
11 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Huh? You use your eyes, you can see it
>>
>>2516826
Light travels in a straight line so you can project from the light source and calculate cast shadows. It gets a bit complex to actually do it properly when you have organic forms casting onto other organic forms, so just use your brain and intuition to guess how the shadow projects off and it will look good enough. People can't really tell very well if cast shadows are a bit off (same with specular reflections).

If you really want it more accurate then you can always build a quick clay or 3d model and see for yourself how it looks.

Cast shadows = sharp edges
Form shadows = soft edges w/ core

is it better to have a dayjob when making art? if you do good work, people will eventually come to you. if not, at least you'll be financially independent from a lifetime fulfilling hobby.

it also gives one more room for originality and artistic freedom if people here care for that
39 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
I think most artists who do make money with it do have a primary job to support themselves. Not many artists can make enough money SECURELY each month, so it's better to have a backup. If you drown in jobs, then you probably don't have to. There's also art dayjobs in offices though.
>>
>>2515570
You think about it.

-Get a 9-5
-Come home by 6 (if you have to commute)
-Wash up/dinner (1 hour)
It's now 7pm, unless you have other errands (or kids) you now have 5 hours to draw until you have to go back to your slave owner again for another 4 days.

Part-time job sure why not. The problem with your post is
>lifetime fulfilling hobby
>hobby
We're in this to become the best. If you don't want to be the best and not make art your job then you are going to keep making excuses like 'people will eventually come to you'.
>>
>>2515570
sounds like you've already convinced yourself of the answer. personally, I think it's much more difficult for a part-time artists to succeed at art. Art, as well as real success at most anything, demands sacrifice.

My bf really doesn't care if I would draw yaoi, hentai, furry or fetish stuff. He's basically okay with everything I draw.

why people keep asking for critique on his "1st time ever" stuff?

the only valid advice you can get at this point is to keep working: do it 10, 100 and 1000 times again, until you get good. you're not supposed to show like 99% of your work to nobody

Hi guys,

I am looking to buy some good books of painters (over amazon) with some strong compositional elements to apply to photography.

Any recommendation?

>>
>>2517217
Is there a reason you want to get a book on artists over photographers?

And I suppose it depends a lot on the type of photography you do as well. I really like the composition of Andrew Wyeth and Edward Hopper and think both of their work would carry over fantastically to photography, but that is just my personal taste.

I would avoid any books specifically on composition though. It's mostly pretty bullshit. Composition is one of those gut-feeling things and it is dangerous to fall trap to conventions and formulas, plus a lot of the analysis on composition is made-up and not what the artist intended.
>>
>>2517220
I also buy / bought books from photographers, but i want to learn from the core. Maybe i have more margin to create things from there to here (photography)
I am interested in portrait, street and social documentary photography.
Hopper is very good, already have a book of him. Gonna look Wyeth stuff. I was also looking some baroque and renaissance stuff.
thx a lot
>>
>>2517220
And yeah, we have the same felling about that shitty composition books.
One PDF is enough for that.

Anyone know some inexpensive alternatives to copic markers? shits expensive

Prismacolor

Prismacolor markers have pretty vibrant inks and can last a while.
Blick Studio markers are surprisingly decent. The ink quality isn't as nice but they're good if you want to dip your toes before spending hundreds of bucks on markers.
Both come in brush tips like copics.

why are you making art and what is your goal?

personally i want to become great at art to inspire other people and have people recognise me to be good at something. i'm not aiming for an art job, but it's important to me that my art will be at least good enough to make some kind of living off (mostly just for validation)

my life has been falling apart for so long now that motivation for anything of any kind is like a rare resource. i was fired yesterday and now i'm a NEET again with nothing but time. i stop any creative endevour the second it starts to feel like work. i'm losing interest in everything and now all of what occupies my time i am forcing myself to enjoy. even a competent initial level of performance can't get me to see anything to completion.

i have barely started or half finished drawings, piano pieces, programs, models, and media everywhere. i'm slowly turning into a barely sentient NPC, but my only desire in life was to be productive in the arts. at this point i just want to sleep for 16 hours a day. what can i do to enjoy the entire process of creating art, not just the end result? how can i get myself to enjoy simply drawing for the sake of drawing?
has anyone here clawed there way out of a hole?

Has there ever been a time where you or a classmate had a moment where you either went ape shit in class, walk out of class, or yelled at a teacher/classmate for no reason?

I have one.
>Beginning design class
>Girl with autism sits a couple of chairs from me
>Autism? Perhaps I'm jumping to conclusions.
>maybe just psychotic
>Her shits not great and doesn't take criticism well
>Talks to herself regularly
>Violent talks, like cursing and talking about hurting people under her breath
>One day, a different girl that sits along side of her tells her to stop mumbling to herself
>She sucker punches the bitch in the arm and tells her to stfu
>Teacher gets up, "Wtf?! You need to leave."
>Girl pulls out a exact-o knife
>"I will cut you, white woman!"
>Everyone is shitting breaks
>"Someone is going to die", I think.
>Girl instead takes all her stuff and leaves the room
>class ends for the day

They called the university police and we never saw her again. I guess the reason she left was because she realized she could get into some deep shit and left before she went any deeper. Idk.

I'm also not sure why she felt the need to call my teacher "white woman." She was white too.

Is freedom of speech even real anymore? It's like all modern art is some sort of indoctrination and I just don't want to be a part of 'that'. Is there hope? Like when you look at Matt Stone and Trey Parker they are still sort of real so that gives me hope but that's about it. Is there a reason for me to believe I can create without bearing some sort of uncalled consequence for it? Is the world even still gonna be here when I get good?

Society changes and so do the views of people. That's just how it is. If you go against it, people will react to it accordingly. (Doesn't mean death threats or witch hunts are acceptable though, but there's always children on the internet) Either you can deal with it or you keep your opinions to yourself.

The community is way too large to sustain a community like Sijun or old ConceptArt.org again at this point, sadly.

The pro/amateur ratio is completely off, in fact most pros don't even bother interacting with the community directly at this point because they'll be flooded with hundreds of comments from amateurs that they'll never have time to reply to.

Your best option is to fragment into a smaller cell, find some friends to start a private Skype group, Google Hangout, etc with - ideally you want one or two jobbing professionals to every four to six amateurs. This is also far more asshole-proof than large forums or groups.

Most artists use social media for these daily / weekly challenges these days. Sketch dailies on twitter and the facebook spitpaint group are probably the most popular with tons of pros participating.

But yeah, it's a shame that there is no more forum with an active community dedicated to this sort of thing. I loved the Ca.org challenges and how motivating it was to see so many people participate, write crits, share their WIPs, then vote for what work they thought was best etc. That's all gone from the social media equivalent or even LAS.

Oh hey another day on /ic/.

Can I become good at art when I start with 12 or is it already too late?

Should I do this certain exercise 231 hours before I move on? Asking because I'm a wimpy faggot that rather collects arbitary information and opinions instead of actually practicing and figuring things out on my own.

I'm going trough this certain book that is written in a style unsuited for me but I force myself trough it because I heard a bunch of opinions on how good that book is even though I don't understand shit.

I created a schedule. First I start with 2 hours doing that thing, Than another 30 minutes that things and then another 3 hours that thing. I wrap it up with one hour of that thing. I actually didn't put any thought into those exercises and just follow them because I heard other people are putting hours in like that. Also I need to mention I use my smartphone with a stop watch app to get my hours exactly in to the last second. Sometimes it's hard and I see there are 10 minutes left but even when I want to give up I move my pen for this last few minutes to feel accomplished and that I actually completed my arbitrary rule that makes no sense. But hey, that one time I finished my overwhelming schedule was pretty cool, never doing it again though and also starting to hate this shit.

Man, lately getting depressed. Better make a thread on /r9k/ 2.0 to hopefully see other people being miserable too. It's only 12 but I feel like the whole day is gone anyway since I'm so depressed. Maybe tomorrow will be a better day.

Wow, lately fixed my depression for a few seconds by seeing those progression threads. I especially like those people that made no progress in years or actually declined in skill. I feel so much more talented and superior.

Another book share thread went up recently. I couldn't help downloading another book I will never read in my entire life and that just will rot away along with the other stuff on my 2tb harddrive full of art stuff.

Acquire professional psychiatric consultation.
You have dedication. You have resolve. You have practice and fortitude. You are far, far ahead of the game. Is your mind in this context, not your objective work history or experience that is/are to be critiqued here.

You are doing well.
Just as in learning physics - first we teach the 11th or 12th grade pupil example after example - before the abstract concepts of Quantum Mechanics later.

Artistically, you are practicing very very diligently. Stop overthinking.
