How is abstract art dead?
I was feeling like making a trip to a museum or gallery to see some inspiring work in person. Made a search for a 300km max distance, spend hours looking through all this shit and found ZERO shows that aren't abstract or highly conceptualized weird shit.
abstract painting cant die, it is the by product of an intuitive developmental process (expeshaly for color mixing. Finding the point of a sloppy mess is a metaphor for life. Saying Abstract is dead is like saying the examination of life is dead.
definitely dead on /ic/
What medium is paper with very little tooth, or very smooth, good for?
>>2509883
charcoal imo, but some people prefer a tooth. I find detail drawing very difficult on toothed paper unless im drawing on a big scale.

You paid too much. You should've used toilet paper or napkins. If you're just starting out, you don't need all this fancy equipment.

Where should I start researching and learning about art history?
I have absolutely zero background in visual art (I studied music and literature), but I'm really keen to start. Obviously this is hugely overwhelming, especially as a beginner. Are there any resources you'd recommend that are geared towards absolute beginners? Something like a "For Dummies" book.
I'm looking to study all the important movements, key figures, their techniques, key pieces, different mediums, social and cultural contexts, that kind of thing.
I checked out the sticky, and the archives were really cool - super useful - but I want to do more than just look at the pictures.
>>2509544
Honestly for just a casual overview Wikipedia is surprisingly good. The fact that it is full of links too is useful since you can start looking at more art and artists that are relevant as you go.
Start here and read the main articles for each section: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_painting
If you already have studied music history then there will be some overlap since art movements are not restricted to one type of art (ie there is Baroque art and music, and there are stylistic similarities).
In my opinion it is good to get a general idea of the main movements and artists, and then once you figure out what you respond to and like just focus on that one area. Most people on /ic/ for instance will almost only focus on art from the past 150 years or so.
>>2509557
Thanks for your words! Honestly, I'd never of thought to check Wikipedia. This is exactly what I was after. Like you said, the external references are perfect, too.
Could you point me towards any physical books that you think might be useful?
>>2509676
Sorry I never took an art history course that required a textbook so can't suggest anything. I am more familiar with artists from history as opposed to the actual history itself, if that makes sense. If there is an artist I like I will read their biography (either online or a book) and I will look up other artists associated with that person. Mostly I look at their art though. If you keep this up you can start to find many connections between people and get a sense of shifts in art through history. And while some people's art will be seen in a different light when you know the entire historical context, this isn't always the case. Many artists were relatively free from political or social movements that happened in their lifetime.
I mean let's face it, artists like Sakimichan and others may not have great drawing skills but I want to know some of their painting techniques. I don't want to pay though, so anyone got any of her tutorials they can dump for a cheapskate anon like me?
Tutorial dump central if not.
fuck off

Ouch my fee fees, you're a real badass I don't think I can handle this.

Does anyone have any good guides to color temperature in regards to painting and/or digital painting? I think this is the biggest problem with my color palettes when I paint: my color temperature is inconsistent. It doesn't help that I tend to color objectively rather than subjectively. Any tips?
>>2509611
What do you mean with color objectively?
>>2509611
Just trust your gut. It will be somewhat obvious if the temperature is wrong. You can lightly glaze over it to shift the temperature a bit, either by putting a warmer/cooler colour over it or putting a grey of the same value to reduce saturation.
Also post an example of you work. It is possible there is more going on than colour relativity.
>>2509613
Objective color is the "true" color of an object, and subjective color is how it appears based on light sources and the colors surrounding the object.

FAQ:
Something's broken, what do I do?
>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email [email protected].
What do we draw?
>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.
What's a low effort warning?
>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.
>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.
What happens if I'm eliminated?
>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.
How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?
>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.
Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?
>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.
