Don't look for people. Look for things to do. People will follow.
Join a club. Join a church. Join a gym. Do volunteer work. Go to concerts, museums, clubs. Take a "useless" class (art appreciation, cooking, etc) at a community college.
You'll be in the company of people doing the same thing, so you automatically have something in common. It will be natural to chat, go out for a drink after, plan activities.
And some of them might be female-type people.

The one thing i hate most about these kinds of parents is their way of guilt tripping you. I dont know about you but thats what my mother does all the time. And dont even get me started with arguing logic with them. Yesterday they took my bed so im currently sleeping on those martess things on top of the bed. So I work part time as a waiter at a local restaurant and recently we hired this new girl. Me and this girl hit it off right away and have been texting for a few days now. Hey, /adv/. I'm a lesbian and most of my friends in college are straight (both guys and girls). I like them a lot and we joke all the time about me being a dyke.
