Everything after Series 7 takes place in another universe.
Starting with Asylum of the Daleks, the show takes place in a new reality where the classic series and series 1 to 6 of the new series never happened, at least not the way we saw them. The presence of the Great Intelligence and the multiple splinters of Clara fundamentally alters huge parts of the Doctor's past. So, hats off to Steven Moffat....he's chucked the past out the window; we're essentially watching a different show.

So what's the story with the First Order?
It's basically the Empire, right? But why would anyone want to bring the Empire back outside of a handful of politicians and bureaucrats?
I mean, the Empire was attractive because it was on top of everything. It was powerful as fuck, the most powerful organization in the universe. That was basically the ideology behind it: it wasn't about some political ideal as much as it was authority for its own sake. This is why people enlisted to become troopers or pilots, because they're adventurers or somewhat opportunistic (even Luke talks about joining the academy in the beginning of ANH and he's definitely not some fascist half-wit).
This raises the question why would anyone support a minuscule version of the Empire. What benefits you could possibly procure from something that's basically an ultra-violent opposition group? If the sole raison d'etre of the Empire was power, what can it be once it's been ousted?

A huge empire just doesn't disintegrate overnight. Even after Rome fell, the Eastern Roman empire survived for centuries. When Palpatine died, probably just like in the EU, it probably surcumbed to infighting from senior officers now warlords trying to carve out their own little kingdoms. For the people inside those systems, everything remained the same, the empire didn't fall. The Empire meant stability for many, also it was Human sumpremicist which would unite many humans against non-humans

I mean look at you guys, it's pathetic: you're all fucking obsessed with Star Wars. Except you guys don't even like the movie, you're obsessed with hating it and making sure you spoil the movie for everyone and tell everyone you meet how awful it is. It's like the one edgy 14 year old who tries his hardest to ruin everyone elses' fun however he can (except no one actually cares about him and it's all just a poor attempt at gaining attention). The sad thing is you guys are probably at least 20 and still doing the same bullshit. I guess 4chan is where edgy nerds go to settle down.
The one thing that makes me happiest about this movie is that no matter how much losers you guys cry, moan, bitch or whine about how awful it is, no one else on the planet is going to care. People will either watch the movie and like it, or just not watch it and continue actually having a life; only 4chan gets drawn into the sheer hatred and vitriol like no one else. Disney's going to make billions of dollars, Boyega is gonna fuck white women, Abrams is going to be considered a legend, every kid on the planet is getting Star Wars shit for Christmas and everyone is going to watch Episode VIII and IX.
